Division 1 Senior County League Rd 1.
Kenmare Shamrocks 1-06.  Kerins O Rahillys -09

The club season kicked off for our senior team on Saturday evening last with an away trip to Kenmare in round one of the county league.

In what was a perfect evening for football both teams lined out short of a number of regulars , however the players on show lacked nothing in effort and quality.

Jack Savage opened the scoring with a close in free after three minutes for the visitors, this remained to be the only score for the next twelve minutes when the home side drew level.

The half continued in this manner with opportunities few and far between.
The home team set up very conservatively putting a lot of men behind the ball, we found this very difficult to breakdown despite having the majority of possession.
Kenmare found it easier to increase their tally and added points to lead three points to one at the water break.

The lead would have been more were it not for a super save from Shane Foley in goal when faced with a one on one situation.

We were only able to add a single point for the remainder of the half and trailed 5 points to 2 at the half time break, when a couple of missed frees might have seen us closer.

The second half brought an improvement to our attacking play with the deployment of Jack Savage closer to goal causing a lot of problems, and it was from his fine finishing that brought us three unanswered points to level the game midway through the half.

At this stage Barry John Keane stormed into the game with 2 points from play to see us take the lead and a strong foothold on the game.

The impressive Cormac Coffey then kicked a great score from distance to stretch our lead to three with ten minutes remaining.

Two minutes later the home team struck with a goal which came against the run of play giving goalkeeper Shane Foley no chance to level the contest yet again.

This seemed to raise the spirits of the hosts and they had a good period of possession and managed to go ahead with the game entering the last five minutes.

After a patient build up we managed to draw level with a well worked point from our main threat Jack Savage with two minutes of normal time remaining.

Shortly after referee Donal Casey , who it must be said officiated proceedings  well, blew for full time with the spoils shared, in what must be said was probably a fair result.

Players and management will have mixed feelings of how the game panned out, while we could have secured all the points , we could quite easily have came away empty handed .

A major positive was the assured performance of Shane Foley in goals, in front of him the defence will be very pleased to have only conceded seven scores, Donagh Buckley, Patrick Begley , Ross O Callaghan and Cormac Coffey were most impressive.
Our work rate around the middle was commendable and upfront Jack Savage led the forward unit and was assisted by Barry John Keane.

We look forward to next weeks home game against Killarney Legion .

Our Strand Road Blues team were the first to play last Monday in Ballyrickard after a long lockdown. In round 1 of the North Kerry League we were beaten by  a very strong Knocknagoshel / Brosna team who are a newly formed team.
Our coaches headed straight back to Annascaul from this match with our Kerins O’ Rahilly team to play another duo –  Annascaul/ Castlegregory. Unfortunately it was not our day . The girls fought hard to the final whistle. Well done to all!

A misty evening back in Gallarus pitch last Sunday evening as our young ladies took on Corca Dhuibhne in Rd. 1 of the Co. League , division 4. Our captain was Donna O’ Regan. We  lost the toss and we played against the wind in the first half . A slow and nervous start would ultimately cost our girls!  It really was a game of two halves,  with Corca Dhuibhne dominating the first, only to be outplayed by us in the second.
Onwards and upwards for the rest of the year , well done to the team and management.

We meet Listowel Emmets in Rd. 2.
