LOCAL students have been chosen to represent their school in the regional finals of the ‘Our World Irish Aid Awards 2015’ which will be taking place in Limerick on May 20.
St Ita’s & St Josephs will be amongst 11 other schools and their pupils that will take part in the finals and who will be hoping to progress to the national finals on June 16.
The senior class students from the school will exhibit their project on ‘Global Citizenship’ which they created under the supervision of their teacher Anne Lawton.
Anne explained to TraleeToday.ie what the project was about.
“We didn’t think that it [the project] would get anywhere really. There are nine countries in Africa that ‘Irish Aid’ are in partnership with. Each class got their own country and they each had to do a project on them. They all worked really hard as we really only had a couple of weeks to work on this,” said Anne.
“We wanted the children to know that there are other children living in these different communities and that the way we live affects them. If we are selfish and wasteful, we impact on them. It’s hoped that the children see the different communities and the larger community that is out there,” she finished.
All projects created by the students are hoping to highlight the challenges that are facing children in developing countries and the progress which is being achieved there.
Over 1,000 primary schools throughout Ireland will be participating in the ‘Our World Irish Aid Awards 2015’. All of the entries will be assessed on their creativity, understanding of the theme, and their impact. Sixty projects that illustrate strengths across these three areas will receive an ‘Our World Irish Aid Awards’ plaque at the regional awards ceremonies in Dublin, Sligo, Limerick and Cork in May.
A selection of the top entries will then win a place at the final awards ceremony in June. At this ceremony, all twelve finalist schools will be presented with trophies, and the overall ‘Our World Irish Aid Awards’ trophy will be awarded to one outstanding project.
