New Book Captures Kerry’s Republican Past

A NEW book just released gathers together stories, articles and photos published  in The Kerryman and details Kerry’s Republican past, telling the full story of the revolutionary period in Kerry.

‘Rebel Kerry – From The Pages Of The Kerryman’, edited by journalist Simon Brouder from the paper, is a book anyone with an interest in Irish history will want to check out.

The Kerryman was staunchly republican from its inception and enthusiastically recorded the involvement of the Kingdom and its people in the Rising, War of Independence and Civil War.

Published by Mercier Press, the book contains contributions from well-known historians including Ryle Dwyer and Hélène O’Keeffe.

The book captures significant events in Kerry between 1916 and 1923 including: the Rising in Kerry, the Battle of Tralee, the Catherdaniel tragedy, Sinn Féin courts in Dingle and Ardfert, and two weeks of bloody massacres during the Civil War.

Also included are contemporary reports from The Kerryman and numerous Irish newspapers including: Cork Examiner, Daily Mail and Irish Independent.

Timelines with special reference to Kerry for the Easter Rising, Roger Casement, the War of Independence and the Civil War, compiled by Ryle Dwyer are also included.
