WITH the arrival of the Entente Florale judges just one week away, Tralee Tidy Towns are appealing to the public to go that little bit further to have our town looking well.
They’re also appealing to smokers to dispose of their cigarette butts properly as they’re a hindrance to the clean-up effort.
“There has been a great community effort so far,” said Gretta O’Rourke of Tralee Tidy Towns, who was out with a group of volunteers on Thursday night cleaning up around Denny Street.
“The judges arrive next Wednesday, so hopefully there will plenty of people out to welcome them. Thursday is when the actual judging will begin. The Entente Florale are sending 11 judges to inspect the town centre to see if it has it what it takes to win the Europe wide tidy towns competition,” she said
“There has been a lot of different groups that have come on board in the last few weeks, it has been very encouraging” said Gretta.
“Businesses have been putting in a lot of effort painting and cleaning up their premises,” said Gretta.
“Former members of the town council are getting involved – even though the town council has been abolished – and people on CE schemes are literally working overtime,” she said.
One of the main stumbling blocks with the clean-up is the amount of cigarette butts the Tidy Towns volunteers encounter on our streets.
“Can I appeal to smokers to discard their cigarettes properly. They can be very frustrating to clean up,” said Gretta,
“The butts get in everywhere, so I would ask smokers if they could be a bit more mindful of that.”
