CBS The Green students held a Positive Mental Health Day on Friday to coincide with the 10th anniversary of World Mental Health Day.

The objective of which is to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and shape efforts to support mental health. Last year the school became an Amber Flag school.

Wellbeing school co-ordinatior Karen Tobin said that the school “strives to be proactive in promoting an ethos of positive mental health within the school community “ She added that “The continuation and maintenance of Positive Mental Health Initiatives in our school is now more important than ever.”

A host of activities took place all day including a non-uniform day-where all students made a contribution to the charity Pieta House.

The entire school community arrived on Friday morning to upbeat music played throughout the school building, followed by a viewing of a video clip to reinforce the positive message of looking after your mental heath.

Research shows there are simple things you can do as part of your daily life to protect and improve your mental health.

In an address to the school community on Friday morning Ms Tobin stated; “The world is currently experiencing the unprecedented impact of the current global health emergency due to COVID-19 this has also impacted on the mental health of millions of people.

We know that the levels of anxiety, fear, isolation, uncertainty and emotional distress experienced have become widespread as the world struggles to bring the virus under control and to find solutions.  But remember, together we are stronger and together we can make a big difference all over the world.”

She said it brought to mind the current bestselling book by Charlie Mackesy, The Boy, The Mole, The Fox And The Horse.

She said it is a book of hope for the uncertain times we live in and read one of the quotes to students;

“There are dark clouds said the boy,

Yes but they will move on said the horse

“the blue sky above never leaves.”

Each year the group takes part in a Feel Good Friday Walk with their teachers.

Karen states that; “Walking and getting out in the fresh air is good for the mind, body & soul and has great positive health benefits. Thankfully the weather held up and the sun even came out.

On their return, all students received refreshments courtesy of Lee Strand. The school is proactive in encouraging connection as one way to enhance students own mental health. Following the walk students had some time to have a chat with fellow student  outdoors.

Prizes were presented to the winners of a poster competition. The topic of positive mental health was creatively brought to life through the artistic abilities of the pupils.

Also, a TY enterprise group in the school were also doing their bit by selling sports gloves for charity.

Pieta House, which has lost out on many funds due to the COVID-19 pandemic, has teamed up with sports company, Gaelic Performance, and they asked TY mini-companies in schools to sell the gloves.

Cillian Lynch, Dylan Ryan and Ben Hannafin set up a stall in the school and what better time than Positive Mental Health Day to raise funds for a worthy charity.
