Increase In Assaults But Fall In Public Order Offences In Tralee

THERE was a big increase in the amount of assaults in the Tralee area so far this year, according to the latest crime statistics.

Kerry Garda Chief Superintendent, Con Cadogan, delivered the latest figures for ‘Crimes Against The Person’ at the meeting of the Joint Policing Committee in Kerry County Council yesterday.

There were 250 reports of minor assaults in Kerry from January 1 to October 31, up from 227 during the same period last year, a 10% rise. Assaults causing harm in Kerry fell by 17% from 107 in 2015 to 89 so far this year. There was a 29% rise in assaults in the Tralee area (190), a decrease of 19% in Killarney (109), while Listowel saw a reduction of 23% (40).

There was one murder so far this year, the same as in 2015, while there was one less murder threat (7) compared to 2015.

Chief Superintendent Cadogan also gave the ‘Criminal Damage and Public Order’ figures at the meeting. It revealed Arson incidents were down from 16 to 12 and Criminal Damage (non-arson) was down from 330 in 2015 to 251 this year. Tralee saw a decrease of 11%, Killarney down 35% and Listowel down 32%.

With Public Order, there were 651 cases this year, down 11% on 2015, while drunkenness cases were also down 11% at 467 in 2016 compared to 524 in 2015. Tralee was down 6% overall, Killarney down 9% and Listowel down 26%.
