Burglaries And Drug Offences Up In Kerry In First Quarter Of 2017

THERE was an increase in burglaries and drug offences in Kerry in the first three months of 2017 compared to the same period last year, according to the latest Kerry Garda Division crime statistics.

The figures for January 1 to March 31, 2017, were revealed at the meeting of the Joint Policing Committee in Listowel last Friday.

There were 76 non-aggravated burglaries this year from January to March compared to 42 in 2016. Thefts of vehicles were the same at seven for both 2017 and 2016, while there were 20 thefts from vehicles in 2017 compared to 23 last year.

Thefts from shops were up (117 compared to  103) but thefts from other property were down (40 compared to 52 in 2016).

Assault figures were more or less the same with 23 assaults causing harms (24 in 2016) and 65 minor assaults (64 in 2016), criminal damage cases were down by a quarter (45 from 60 in 2016), public order offences were down ten per cent (160 from 177 in 2016), but drunkenness was up (113 from 101 in 2016).

Drug offences were up with 24 cases of possession for sale or supply (from 13 in 2016) and 101 cases of possession for personal use (up from 73). There were eight cases of possession of an offensive weapon, up from two last year.

There was one fatal traffic collision and four collisions causing serious injury. Drink driving cases were up to 66 from 61 in 2016, while there were three cases of drug driving.
