Burglaries See Huge Decrease But Slight Rise In Thefts From Shops In Tralee

BURGLARIES in Kerry have decreased by 59% in the year up to October compared to the same time last year, while thefts from vehicles, shops and other property are also down.

Kerry Garda Chief Superintendent, Con Cadogan, delivered the figures at the meeting of the Joint Policing Committee in Kerry County Council yesterday.

The figures, which compared the period January 1 to October 2016 with the same period in 2015, showed the number of aggravated burglaries at four, the same as the previous year.

Chief Supt Cadogan said these four cases were solved and court cases would follow. In terms of non-aggravated burglaries the figure was 149 compared to 362 in 2015 a fall of 59%.

With regard to theft of vehicles, there were 29 incidents in 2016 compared to 38 in 2015, a fall of 24%. Thefts from vehicles were also down from 94 from 111, a drop of 15%.

While the incidents of theft from shops were down 13% – from 415 in 2015 to 359 this year – there were 264 of these incidents in Tralee which was a rise of 5%.  The number of incidents was down 49% for Killarney and 13% for Listowel. Theft of other property was also down from 266 in 2015 to 193 this year, down 27%.

In all, with regard to Property Crime (a category which all the above figures fall into), there were 903 incidents so far this year compared to 1,306 in 2015, a fall of 31%.
