A TRALEE Municipal District Councillor has asked the Council to identify safe walking and running routes around the greater Tralee area.

In a motion at the meeting of the Tralee Municipal District of Kerry County Council on Monday, Fianna Fáil Cllr. Mikey Sheehy asked that the MD identify and establish five key walking and running routes around the Tralee, Fenit and Ardfert areas.

He asked that they ensure these routes are adequately illuminated, have CCTV, Garda monitoring, dog warden and litter prioritisation to support locals and tourists, especially women, who should feel safe and secure when exercising and exploring the area.

Cllr Sheehy also said these routes should be reviewed in terms of providing small, sheltered seating along these routes for elderly to rest and for people to avoid the elements.

In reply, the Council indicated it will, in conjunction with key stakeholders, develop a County Outdoor Recreation Plan in the coming months.

The plan will take into account the current outdoor recreation amenities in the county and outline where outdoor recreation infrastructure and services should be located.

Council management outlined that Tralee MD has a number of designated quality amenity cycle/walkways located throughout the district.

These include the Tralee to Fenit Greenway, Tralee Bay Amenity Walkway, River Lee Amenity Walkway, Tralee Town Park & Tralee Bay Wetlands. Added to this there are a host of popular unclassified walking routes used by locals within their communities.

The litter/dog wardens carry out a number of joint patrols in known dog fouling/dog walking areas where they meet with dog owners, ask how they dispose of their dog waste and check if they have bags.
