TREES cut down recently at Basin Road will be replaced according to an engineer at Kerry County Council.

At the meeting of the Tralee Municipal District of Kerry County Council on Monday, Cllr Johnnie Wall asked the Council to give an explanation to the public as to the reasoning behind cutting the trees at Basin Road, from the Low Field down to Clifford’s Cash and Carry.

In reply, Tralee Municipal District Engineer, Colm Nagle, explained that there are works planned to upgrade the footpaths at Basin Road in the next six to eight months.

He said the trees were felled primarily due to their condition, exposure to overhead lines and had lost their amenity value. Mr Nagle said the plan is to replace them with a tree type suitable for the area and of reasonable size.

Mr Nagle also said that in conjunction with local groups, the Council has planted over 1,000 trees over the past four years in places like Bracker O’Regan Road, the Town Park, Spa Road and elsewhere.

Mr Nagle said they are engaging arborists for advice regarding their tree policy and are “trying to do the right thing”.

He accepted that members of the public are not happy sometimes with their policy, but they are taking the best advice.

Cllr Sam Locke wanted to inform the public that local councillors were not taking to trees with chainsaws.

He said councillors make representations on behalf of communities who feel trees in their area are overgrown, in danger of collapse, or posing a danger to their homes or pedestrians.

Cllr Locke said they bring these complaints to the attention of the relevant people in the Council who assess the situation and take the appropriate action.
