A CAHERSIVEEN family who lost a loved one last year have raised an incredible amount of money for cancer services in Kerry.

€35,000 has been raised in all for Cahersiveen Hospital’s Hospice Ward (€20,000), the Oncology Day Care Unit at Kerry General Hospital at Kerry University Hospital (€10,000), Recovery Haven (€3,000) and the South West Hospice Community (€2,000).

Last year Francie O’Donoghue was diagnosed with lung cancer just eight weeks before his daughter’s wedding. He bravely walked her up the aisle but sadly passed away 11 weeks later. He was just 56 years old.

A dog racing lover, Francie was a well known face at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium and worked as a milkman and farmer. He left behind his wife Mary and three daughters Lisa, Patricia and Casey.

To honour his memory and raise money for cancer groups in the county, led by wife Mary, a fundraising night was held in the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium. To raise money online a Gofundme page was setup which has to date raised €18,800.

“The amount of money we got back is a tribute to him,” said Mary O’Donoghue. “He loved the greyhounds and dogs so in his memory we started off with that and it just grew and grew, and grew,” she added.

Monday was the first anniversary of Francie’s passing and the O’Donoghue marked the day by distributing what they raised to cancer services around the county.
