FIVE players from town were in action for the Kerry U21s at the weekend when they drew 0-13 to 1-10 with Roscommon in round one of the Hastings Cup.

There was a Tralee man selected in all but one of the outfield lines. Cormac Coffey (Kerins O’Rahilly’s) lined out at left corner back while Conor Jordan (Austin Stacks) partnered him in defence at left half back.

Greg Horan (Austin Stacks) played in midfield and Niall Sheehy (John Mitchels) started at full forward. Jack Savage (Kerins O’Rahilly) made a big impression off the bench scoring three points in the second half of the game which took place in Gort, County Galway.

After going two points down late on from a Roscommon goal, Kerry fought back scoring three unanswered points in a row, one of them from the boot of Jack Savage.

It wasn’t to be for the Kingdom as Roscommon levelled it with the last kick of the game to earn a deserved draw.

Kerry have decided to enter the Hastings Cup this year – which is normally a competition for Midlands teams to try and get a few games under their belt – before they face the winners of Cork v Waterford in the Munster championship on March 18.

The Kerry U21s are managed by Darragh O’Se who along with six senior All-Irelands in his career with Kerry, also picked up two U21 titles in the mid 90s.

It’s now only six weeks away from Austin Stacks All-Ireland Club semi-final so it is unclear for how much longer Conor Jordan and Greg Horan will continue playing with the U21s in the Hastings Cup.

Jack Savage certainly made a case for himself to start the next time out with those three points and Niall Sheehy did his cause no harm either getting on the score-board.

The Kerry U21’s will now face Cavan in Emo, County Laois, this Saturday at 2pm and will badly want to get off the mark to make sure they advance in the competition.
