A MAN who once locked horns with, Father Damo, in an episode of Father Ted, as well as appearing in some iconic TV shows, met students of the Institute of Technology Tralee on Monday, to give a lecture on ‘the art of writing’.
Rio Fanning, played the character, Father Frost (Frosty), in the ‘The Old Grey Whistle Theft’ episode of Father Ted. He has been involved in TV, both as a actor and a writer for almost 50 years.
The 82 year old actor/writer, has played characters in, The Avengers, Dr Who and Emmerdale to name, but a few since first appearing on screen in 1959.
Rio is also a prolific TV writer and has been on the Eastenders writing staff for 30 years. He also wrote episodes for the hit 90’s drama, Ballykissangel.

The audience was completely engaged for the one and half hour session during which Rio, who is currently holidaying with his wife in Kerry, recounted his many entertaining and humorous tales from the world of TV and film.
Students got to hear at first hand the true-life experiences of such an accredited writer and actor. Rio’s final message to all of the students was to “Keep Writing!”
