WITH the beginning of a new school year you may be considering after-school activities for your children.

Perform Speech & Drama provides children with an opportunity to improve their communications skills and boost their confidence in a fun way.

Perform is a Speech & Drama school, now in its seventh year, run by Tralee natives Tracy Bolger and Anne Looney.

Tracy and Anne have over 20 years teaching experience in Speech & Drama and both hold a Licentiate Teaching Diploma.

Classes include Speech & Voice Development, Grade Exams with the Irish Board of Speech & Drama, Poetry, Prose and Storytelling, Drama & Character Development, Improvisation & Mime, Stage & Theatre Studies, Public Speaking, Communication Skills, Workshops & Guest Speakers.

“Speech and Drama classes provide a safe environment for students to challenge themselves without feeling embarrassed or afraid of making a mistake,” said Tracy.

“Drama games and improvisation are fun activities that allow students to stand up and present themselves. Learning to speak well is one of the first steps to improving confidence and communication skills – every class includes some vocal training as well as the opportunity for students to practice eye contact, concentration and listening skills. Creating drama, inventing characters and telling stories are integral parts of our classes. We also incorporate a wide range of poetry and prose to engage and inspire students and to foster a love of reading and literature” said Tracy.

Perform has two terms; September to Christmas and January to May. Infant and junior classes are open to children aged between 5 and 11 years and seniors from 12+ years.

Students can even go on to complete Diploma exams. Classes are held at the new Brookfield College state-of-the-art facility at Monavalley in Tralee.

Classes start at 6pm allowing parents to get home from work before dropping students to class.

“We are delighted to be associated with our examination body the Irish Board of Speech & Drama who cover a wide range of exams including acting, musical theatre, reading, communications, public speaking and grade exams,” said Anne.

“The exams are a great way for the students to focus and provides them with something to work towards. The examiners give excellent feedback which students can use to improve for the following year and track their progression,” she continued.

“We hold a recital night at the end of the second term where each student performs one of their exam pieces – that could be a poem, a mime or a drama piece. It’s a wonderful opportunity for parents to get a flavour of some of the work the students have prepared during the year for their exams. Parents also get to see the improvement in their child, particularly the very shy students,” adds Anne.

Tracy and Anne are committed to providing their students with the opportunity to achieve their full potential and believe everyone has the ability to Perform.

Classes are fun, lively and creative and help students increase the ability to adapt and improvise, overcome shyness, become more assertive, build awareness of social skills, make friends and understand people.

Through this students gain a confidence and self-belief, which will carry and support them throughout their lives.

Perform Speech & Drama is now enrolling for September 2017. Classes commence on Tuesday 19th September 2017.
