FUNDING of €2.5 million  will be made available for the upgrade of rural laneways and non-public roads in Kerry.

The focus of the Local Improvement Scheme is on upgrading rural laneways and non-public roads which provide access to homes, farms and outdoor amenities.

The allocation of funds is for works to be carried out across 2024 and 2025 on these roads, which are not normally maintained by the local authorities.

Welcoming the announcement, Minister Norma Foley said; “This allocation will allow for the sustained improvement, upgrading and enhancing of roads in rural communities and will improve vital access to rural homes and farms throughout the county.”

Minister Heather Humphreys, the Minister for Rural and Community Development, has changed the rules for funding under the Local Improvement Scheme so that one farmer with a herd number can benefit from it.

Up to now, two herd numbers were required to be using a lane or non-public roadway. This will ensure that more families can now qualify for the scheme.
