FRESH from the youngsters of John Mitchels bringing an All-Ireland to town, the members of Tralee Pipes And Drums Band brought more glory home last weekend.

The band travelled to New Ross for the All-Ireland Pipeband Championships on Saturday and came away with an All-Ireland title.

“We were very pleased with the win,” said Chris Shortt, Drum Sergeant with the band. “We put a lot of practise in – two hours each session, three days a week. We’re holding off on the big celebrations for a while though because we’ve got the World Championships coming up in Scotland in August.”

The band won the Grade 4A title – beating off competition from nine other bands – which means they’ll be in Grade 3B now. There are 28 members of the band but many more people travelled to Wexford to support them on Saturday, including members of the Killorglin Pipe Band.

It’s been over 10 years since they last won an All-Ireland but they enjoyed huge success last year by coming fifth in the World Championship in Scotland, something they hope to emulate this year.
