Senior Football
Keanes Supervalu Minor Football Championship Round 1 Kerins O’Rahillys 2-14 Austin Stacks 1-06

The 1st Round of the Minor Championship was played in sometimes damp but otherwise perfect conditions in Strand Road on Wednesday evening last.

The Blues’ dominance led from midfield which they had a grip of for the entire match. They also worked tirelessly for possession and covered back and made runs forward when needed.

Austin Stacks were first to score in the first minute with a point from Seán Ryan and Kerins O’Rahillys first score came after two and a half minutes from a perfectly taken free from Ryan Carroll who took another shortly after. Kerins O’Rahillys dominated in midfield and had Cormac Coffey available to make sweeping runs forward but a goal from Ciarán Flanagan 10 minutes in left them playing catch up.

But following scores from Pádraig Griffin, Gavin O’Brien, Ryan Carroll, Gary Nolan, Gearóid Savage and Karl Mullins and with Austin Stacks (Timmy Murphy) only managing to get one point past defence left the half time score Kerins O’Rahillys 0-10 to Austin Stacks 1-3. Kerins O’Rahillys first half performance built on hard work from the likes Gavin O’Brien and Gary Nolan in particular which was the catalyst for victory.

Half forward Ryan Carroll was their key-man because he linked up effectively from midfield to attack and create chances and their defence worked tirelessly to keep Austin Stacks at bay. Kerins O’Rahillys started the second half as if they had something to prove with every man on the field playing at his best.

Link play proved essential and showed when we dominated all over. Key in the second half was the goal scored by Diarmuid O’Sullivan 18 minutes into the half to put 6 points between the sides. After this it was a case of adding on the scores and super sub Daniel Nix did just that by scoring 1-01 as did James O’Connor 0-01.

Scorers for Austin Stacks in the second half were Seán Fitzmaurice, Ferdia O’Brien and Seán Dukes but it was not enough to bridge the gap and the final score was Kerins O’Rahillys 2-14 Austin Stacks 1-06.
