THE Tralee premiere of a new short film made by four local women around the theme of domestic violence, will take place in the Ballyroe Heights Hotel on Friday night at 8pm .

The premiere will be followed by a ‘Lippy Sing’ event, MC’d by Brian Hurley, featuring a number of acts including Cllr Toireasa Ferris, followed by a disco.

‘Silence Is Golden — From Birth To Death’ is a short film made by Stormm Productions which is made up of four women, Miriam Moriarty Owens, Selina Switzer, Rebecca Kemp and Mary Tuohy who met as part of a local drama group.

The ten minute long film is about the reality of domestic violence and how it can affect anyone at any time of life – from birth to death. Although dramatised, the film is based on actual stories the women have heard from other people.

The film was made in association with EagleSky Media with sound from GEM Audio Solutions and it’s hoped the film will encourage anybody who is in a domestic abuse situation to seek help.

“It’s a very moving film,” said Miriam Moriarty Owens. “It tells four stories, one of which is about a man being abused by his wife as it’s not just women who can suffer domestic abuse. The film covers all ages, from children to the elderly, showing how domestic violence can affect everyone. We want to get the message out that there is help out there and you can make that change and get out of an abusive situation.”

The four ladies also act in the film and local people feature as extras. Martin Hurley also wrote a song called ‘Reborn’ which features in the film. The movie has been shown at the Dingle Film Festival and will be shown at a Dublin event on June 12.

Miriam is hoping that as many people as possible show up at the premiere on Friday night and promises some great entertainment, as after the launch of the movie there will be a ‘Lippy Sing’ event and disco.

Special guest for the event is Cllr Toireasa Ferris who will be performing along with other acts. Brian Hurley is MC for the evening and judges include Mary O’Donnell and Breeda Hurley. Tickets will be available at the door at €15.
