Seniors    Na Gaeil travelled to Finuge on Sunday to take on the home team in round 2 of the Premier Junior Championship.

Unfortunately the game had to be abandoned after twenty minutes in a most distressing manner when two Finuge players collided and were seriously injured.

The ambulance had to be called and both players were removed to hospital .It was very upsetting for the players, their families, the Finuge club and players and supporters from both sides.

Everyone in the Na Gaeil club sends their best wishes to both players and their families and we hope that they have a speedy recovery.

The game was level at four points each before it was called off. Na Gaeil’s scores came from Jack Barry (2) and one each from Diarmuid O’Connor and Eoghain Sheehy.  Maurice Corridan pointed two frees for Finuge and Ricky Heffernan and Paudie Galvin scored one each.

Premier Junior Championship Round 3    Round 3 of the Premier Junior Championship Na Gaeil V Ballymac is due to take place in Na Gaeil on Saturday evening next April 14th at 6.30pm. The fact that Na Gaeil must play Finuge in a rescheduled round 2 in Round 2 may have a bearing on this fixture.

U16 Ladies    Our 2018 season kicked off with a home game against Ballymac.  The timing of the game was not great as it fell during the Easter holidays and a number of our players were away. We managed to get fourteen players thanks to some of the U14 girls stepping up.

The conditions were very poor on the night but the Na Gaeil girls were dominating possession. However they were unable to convert the possession into scores and after a very low scoring first half went in a point down 0-2 to 0-3.

Ballymac came out stronger in the second half and with plenty of subs were able to keep their legs fresh.  All credit to the home team though, they did not lie down and kept up the tempo they showed in the first half.

We then took a body blow when we conceded a goal. In such a low scoring game this gave the visitors a big lift and they started piling on the pressure.  The Na Gaeil backs stood firm and dealt with the challenges.

It was difficult to breech the Ballymac defence but when the ball was cleared from the Na Gaeil defence late in the game, Sarah Barrett picked up the ball and covered great ground, her shot rebounded to the oncoming Sophie Lowham who beat the Ballymac defence to the ball and claimed a goal for the home team.

It was nip and tuck until the final whistle with both sides exchanging points. The game ended with both teams sharing the points.  The Na Gaeil girls will be disappointed that they did not do better with their scoring opportunities but with so many young players stepping up, this was no bad start to the league.

We have no match this week but face the Stacks away and Legion at home the following week.  Hopefully with more girls back and a few more training sessions we will be able to build on the opening performance.
