U14 Girls: Well done to our U14 girls who defeated Firies in Round 3 of the County League last night.

Senior Men: The final round of the Credit Union County League took place yesterday afternoon in Killeen. Our opponents were Templenoe.

Prior to the game both teams had the luxury of knowing that their status in Division 2 was already secured. Na Gaeil lined out without a number of regulars due to hurling commitments next weekend and we were on the back foot early on.

Templenoe’s Aidan Crowley got the first point of the game and he proceeded to be a major thorn in our defense for the full 60 minutes. It took 10 minutes before Na Gaeil registered their first score but it was a significant one as Eoghan Daly got through for a goal. Templenoe, with the aid of the slight breeze, continued to enjoy most of the possession and added a point.

A sloppy pass in our defense was intercepted by in-rushing Stephen O’Sullivan of Templenoe but Devon Burns brought off a wonderful save at the expense of a 45. Templenoe failed to convert the 45 but moments later they did add the equalizing point. Na Gaeil were at this stage finding it hard to penetrate the Templenoe defense and a few of our shots at goal were easily dealt with by the Templenoe keeper.

Finally in the 17th minute Dara Devine kicked our first point to edge us ahead again, 1-1 to 0-3. But from there until the halftime whistle Templenoe found their shooting boots and added 5 points without reply to lead by 0-8 to 1-1.

The third quarter was very evenly contested with both sides adding 4 points to their total. With 10 minutes remaining Devon Burns won a Templenoe kickout and fed the ball to Dara Devine who slotted it over to cut the gap to 3 points.

Dara soon followed this with a converted free to keep Na Gaeil’s challenge very much alive. Next came a crucial moment in the game. Templenoe mounted another attack and it looked like they were through for a goal but Devon brought off another outstanding point-blank save to keep them at bay.

With only 2 minutes remaining Templenoe tapped over their 13th point to give them a 3-point cushion. Na Gaeil mounted one final attack. Damien Bourke drove at the Templenoe defense, linked up with Kieran O’Connor and Jack Bourke before taking the return pass and firing beyond the Templenoe keeper to give Na Gaeil an unlikely but deserved share of the spoils.

U13 Boys: Defeat last night for our lads against Austin Stacks in the first round of the Central League. Final score Na Gaeil 0-7, Austin Stacks 5-12.

U15A Boys: Our boys travelled back to Gallaras last Wednesday evening to play An Ghaeltacht in Round 2 of the Division 1 Central Region. Weather conditions were pleasant which helped the game of football and a great game it was.

The first half was close for the first 20 minutes with An Ghaeltacht leading 0-6 to 0-3 but then they seemed to get a stronghold on the game and dominated for the last 10 minutes. While they got their scores easier we found it difficult and halftime score was 1-07 to 0-03.

Our lads went out with great intent for the second half but it was the home side that struck the first blow with a goal from the throw in and followed it up with a point. 25 minutes left and trailing 2-08 to 0-03 there was a mountain to climb.

However the lads battled hard and chipped away at the points and brought it back to 2-08 to 0-8. Another quick point followed by a goal put us to within 2 points and it was game on. Another point by An Ghaeltacht put them 3 points clear but our lads went on to kick four more points without reply to put their nose in front by the finest of margins. Last kick of the game was a 45 for us which was put dangerously into the square and somehow found the net.

Final score was Na Gaeil 2-13 and An Ghaeltacht 2-09. A great win for the lads who showed character all over the field. Also need to mention our goalkeeper Fionn O Dálaigh who had a man of the match performance between shots stopped and our own kick outs that we won. Thanks to An Ghaeltacht for a great sporting game. Thanks to the referee also.
