RIP: It was with great sadness that we learned of the passing last Thursday of Joan Murphy, nee O’Sullivan, of Ard Na Lí. Joan’s late husband Séamus was a founding member of our club and Joan herself will be fondly remembered as a great Na Gaeil woman.

She was instrumental in many fundraising events in those early years. Joan was pre-deceased by her son Breanndán who passed away in February 2022. May she rest in peace.

Senior Ladies: Our senior ladies lost to Southern Gaels yesterday in their final group game in the Senior County Championship and unfortunately that result means they miss out on a semi-final spot.

Senior Men: Last Saturday in Killeen Na Gaeil took on Dr. Crokes in Round 2 of the Garvey’s SuperValu Senior County Championship.

The game started in ideal weather conditions and it was the Crokes who were fastest out of the blocks.

Their first attack brought a great save from Devon Burns as he tipped the ball onto the crossbar and the follow-up shot was blocked by a Na Gaeil defender before a Crokes forward eventually put the ball across the goal and wide.

It was an early let off for Na Gaeil but Dr Crokes maintained their pressure and secured the game’s first point on 4 minutes. A Devon Burns free levelled the game before a free for Dr Crokes put them back in front after 8 minutes.

Immediately afterwards Dr. Crokes squandered another goal chance much to the relief of the locals. Diarmuid O’Connor was coming more into the game and kicked a super point from 40 meters out to level matters at 2 points apiece.

Dr. Crokes continued to enjoy a lot of possession and added another point from play. Both teams had a wide each before another Dr. Crokes point put them 4-2 ahead. Another powerful run by Diarmuid O’Connor saw him take on the visitor’s defence and kick another great score, this time off his left boot.

The tigerish Na Gaeil defence were beginning to get to grips with the Dr. Crokes forwards at this stage and a brilliant steal from Stefan Okunbor in the corner back position led to our next score, a point from Jack Sheehan.

A minute later it was Jack Sheehan again who put Na Gaeil ahead for the first time scoring a lovely point after a clever dummy solo. Dr. Crokes were soon level again but Tomás Ó hAiniféin added the last score of the half in injury time to leave Na Gaeil ahead by 6 points to 5 at the break.

Dr. Crokes were level within a minute of the restart but our lads continued to drive forward and were rewarded when Damien Bourke was fouled and Devon edged us ahead once more from the resultant free.

The as ever hard-working James O’Connor popped up with the next score to extend our lead to 2 points but the Crokes replied immediately with a point of their own.

Jack Barry won the next kickout and launched a 40m pass into Darragh Reen who did brilliantly to call the mark and subsequently kicked a valuable point. At this stage the weather had deteriorated with persistent rain now falling.

Super work again in defence by Jack Doyle and Niall O’Mahony led to another excellent point from Tomás Ó hAiniféin and with 17 minutes remaining Na Gaeil led by 3.

Dr. Crokes continued to enjoy plenty possession but squandered numerous opportunities before eventually adding a point to their tally on the 17 minute mark.

Then it was Na Gaeil’s turn to waste some great chances as 2 potential goal opportunities went abegging in quick succession.

Dr. Crokes continued to lay siege on our goal but some excellent defending by our lads and more poor shooting kept them at bay until the 34th minute when Tony Brosnan did finally manage to grab what would be the game’s final point.

The final whistle was greeted with great jubilation as the win means the lads have secured a place in the quarter-finals.

In the meantime they will face Dingle (away) next Saturday in Round 3 at 2pm.
