MTU Project To Receive Over €574,683 In Funding

.
Dr. Tim Yeomans, MTU; Dr. Emma Murphy, TUS; Minister Martin Heydon; and Leo Murray, ATU at the announcement of funding.

A MUNSTER Technological University-led project, Springwool, which focuses on removing obstacles and providing a springboard for innovation in the Irish-grown wool sector, has received €574,683 from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine.

The project is being run in collaboration with Atlantic Technological University, Technological University of the Shannon and University College Dublin. The funding was announced as part of €22.3 million the Department is providing for 21 new research projects.

Minister of State with special responsibility for Research and Development at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Martin Heydon T.D., announced the funding at an event today at Farmleigh Estate.

Continued below…

.

Dr Tim Yeomans, Centre Manager, Shannon Applied Biotechnology Centre (MTU), said, “We are delighted to receive this funding from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine to support the Irish-grown wool sector.”

“This is the most significant amount of funding ever allocated to wool research in Ireland and was driven by the publishing of the Wool Feasibility Study in 2022, and with the support of the Irish Grown Wool Council and the Wool Research Hub. Given the opportunities for Irish-grown wool, we feel it will be the first of many projects that will help to support and develop this sector and provide a fair return to farmers for what should be a valuable resource.”

The funding comes at a time when farmers are getting little in return for their wool; it costs farmers about €3.50 to shear a sheep with a return of roughly 20 cent/kg for the fleece. This funding will go towards key research to help create a brighter future for Irish-grown wool.

The different strands of research show the great potential of Irish wool. One application involves treating wastewater from scouring wool. Another examines repurposing waste wool to create compost.

There are also uses in cosmetics, medical device and healthcare through the extraction of ceramides and keratin from the wool.

A SERIES of free events will be held at Kerry Library to celebrate National Play Day from Saturday, July 13 to Saturday, July 20.

National Play Day is an annual initiative of the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth whereby local authorities are supported to deliver a programme of themed activity that promotes play and recreation opportunities for children and young people across the country.

By linking in with Kerry County Council’s services, partnerships and programmes, Healthy Kerry, Kerry Library and Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership have put together an exciting suite of free play events for children. Click here to see the timetable of events.

Continued below…

.

The programme was launched today by the Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Breandán Fitzgerald.

“Allowing time to play for children at every age is crucial for their development. When children have the time and space to play without restriction, their imaginations can soar. Children are happiest and at their most vital and energetic when they play,” said Healthy Kerry Co-ordinator, Deirdre Hegarty.

“Given that play is so important for children’s development and overall happiness, Kerry County Council are delighted to offer a variety of free play workshops through our library services for National Play Day”.

Cahersiveen, Killarney, Listowel, Killorglin and Tralee libraries will host a variety of free play events and workshops to celebrate National Play Day including LEGO, sensory construction playtime, STEM Toys playtime and Irish myths and legends themed arts and crafts.

Maeve Ryan of Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership said: “We are delighted to partner with Healthy Kerry and Kerry library on this fantastic initiative to highlight the importance of play for children, not only for their learning development but their physical development and well-being too”.

Niamh Doyle from Kerry Library said, “Play is essential to help children to learn, explore, and make sense of the world around them. We’re delighted to support this initiative in our libraries.”

UHK Introduces Text Service To Remind Patients Of Appointments

.

UNIVERSITY Hospital Kerry (UHK) is excited to announce the launch of a two-way SMS text messaging reminder service to enhance patient engagement and reduce missed appointments.

Roll out of this new service has now commenced and will serve to remind outpatients of their upcoming appointments and allow them to confirm or cancel directly via text message.

Patients will continue to receive their initial outpatient appointment details via letter. Ten days before the scheduled appointment, patients will receive their first SMS Text reminder.

Continued below…

.

If there is no response to the first reminder, a second SMS Text reminder will be sent five days before the appointment.

Upon receiving the text message, patients should reply: ‘Y’ to confirm attendance or ‘N’ to indicate they will not be attending.

Patients who do not respond or who respond with ‘N’ will be contacted by the hospital to reschedule or to remove them from the waiting list if the appointment is no longer needed. This service will be implemented across all outpatient specialties.

UHK has introduced this service to improve patient engagement and address the issue of missed appointments.

Many patients forget their appointments, leading to significant costs for the HSE and wasted time for medical staff.  Missed appointments also prevent those time slots from being offered to other patients, prolonging wait times.

Studies have shown that appointment reminders significantly reduce the number of missed appointments.  By improving clinic utilisation, here at UHK, we aim to shorten wait times for patients on the Outpatient Waiting List and enhance overall patient experience.

Survey Shows 31% Of Kerry People Support England In Euro 2024

.
.

A SURVEY by a betting company has revealed that 31% of Kerry people who took part are supporting England in Euro 2024.

Our neighbours are in the semi-finals on Wednesday against the Netherlands and it appears they have some support in the Kingdom.

Tonybet commissioned a survey to unearth exactly how Irish fans feel about supporting England as they look to win their first international tournament since 1966.

Continued below…

.

In a survey of over 1,000 people conducted via pollsters Bounce Insights, it revealed the majority of Antrim, Fermanagh, Derry and Carlow natives want to see the Three Lions lift the trophy.

Limerick was the least supportive of England, followed by Kilkenny and Cavan. Men have a more favourable view of England than women and Spain are the squad Irish fans want to see take the title.

The poll revealed that Carlow was the most pro-England county with 65% of respondents admitting they would like to see England win the tournament with Antrim (58%), Derry (62%) and Fermanagh (60%) being the only other counties where the majority will be cheering for Southgate’s men.

On the flip side, Limerick is the most adverse to England going all the way, with just 14% of those polled admitting they will support the Three Lions.

The people of Kilkenny (15%), Cavan (20%), Longford (20%) and Wicklow(22%) are also hesitant to raise the St. George’s cross for the remainder of the tournament.

However, over a quarter of Dubliners (28%) hope to see Bellingham and the boys do the business, while in Cork – a county steeped in Fenian roots – one in four are getting behind them.

Elsewhere, when broken down by gender, Irish women are less inclined to support the near neighbours with only 28% backing the auld enemy compared to 35% of men.

The Tonybet poll also revealed that of the semi-finalists still in the tournament, Spain is the team of choice for Irish people – with 40% getting behind the Iberians followed by Netherlands (24%) and France (20%) with the remaining 16% backing England.

When asked if they believe Ireland will qualify for the next Euros, some of which will be played in Ireland and includes 2 guaranteed spots for the host nations who fail to qualify on merit, only 46% believe that they will make the tournament.

Here’s the list of counties and whether they support England or not.

Kerry Men Helping Expand The Junior Entrepreneur Programme Into China

.
Tom Cooper, PYP coordinator at Xiamen International School, pictured with his wife Fang and children Maureen and Danny. Maureen participated in the JEP pilot at the school this year.

THE Junior Entrepreneur Programme, founded by  Kerry businessman Jerry Kennelly, has made its first foray into China and two Kerry men are spearheading its expansion.

A new pilot programme was launched in the city of Xiamen in Fujian province earlier this year, and the first 85 JEP entrepreneurs have created their businesses.

It all started when Paul McCarthy, a teacher at Xiamen International School, began searching for an entrepreneurship and life skills development programme for his students last Autumn.

Continued below…

.

Paul has been teaching in international schools in different cities in China since 2015. He currently teaches Middle School (ages 11 – 15) at Xiamen International School. Xiamen is located on the South East coast of China. It is home to the first free trade zone established in China.

Marie Lynch and Vicky Landers of the Junior Entrepreneur Programme with Paul McCarthy at Xiamen International School. Paul accepted the Bright Spark Award on behalf of one of his students.

Paul had run the Junior Entrepreneur Programme (JEP) at home in Kerry and felt something similar would be ideal for his class. “I was a primary principal in Lauragh, a small, rural 2-teacher school in South Kerry, from 2011 – 2015 and took part in JEP before I moved to China. The children greatly enjoyed it and learned a huge amount.”

“I felt that this type of programme, with a focus on collaboration and life skills, would fit very well with the ethos of Xiamen International  School. A high percentage of parents are business people, and I was confident they would appreciate the introduction of entrepreneurship skills at an early age.”

To his surprise, he could not find a programme comparable to JEP. “From my experience in an American International School, a British International School, and now an independent International Baccalaureate School, I haven’t encountered anything similar to JEP in the international community. Various countries have different initiatives but none of them bring together all of the elements in such a neat way.”

Paul contacted the Junior Entrepreneur Programme office to ask if they would consider allowing him to participate, and before long he and his class were up and running.

The pilot was a great success and culminated with one of Paul’s students winning the JEP Bright Spark Award.

Chen Jia (Jana) won the award for her idea, the PLA converter, which could convert used plastic into 3D printing material. The Bright Spark is the only award presented to an individual student.

Jana is looking forward to her trophy presentation when the school re-opens in mid-August. “I learned many lessons from this experience”, she said.  “The main thing is that things don’t always go as planned, and that’s okay. The sense of success came from a place other than making money. It came from the pride of being able to organise everything.”

Paul is not the only Kerry native working at the school. Tom Cooper, from Ballymacelligott, was the Primary Years Programme Coordinator at Xiamen IB School this year, and responsible for leading the implementation of the primary years curriculum.

Tom, his wife Fang, and their two children, Maureen and Danny, regularly visit Kerry. Maureen was a member of the class that completed JEP in Xiamen this year.

Another Irish staff member, James Gleeson from Midleton, Co. Cork, the IT and Communications Coordinator, has been based at XIS for five years and was heavily involved in the delivery of JEP.

According to Paul, there is a significant Irish community teaching in various institutions in China. ”The Irish education system holds up very well to international comparison. Irish teachers have an excellent reputation in China and around the world and are in high demand,” he added.

Our supporters stuck by us, which is much appreciated, there is now a buzz around the village again it was a mighty effort from everyone involved. Thank you to the team also for their work ethic and teamwork which allowed the win last night. Thank you to each and every one of the team and supporters. Naomh Pádraig Abú

U7

We had a good run out in Strand Road on Sunday morning. The weather stayed dry, and they enjoyed themselves. Thank you to Kerins O Rahillys for a great game.

U9

Our U9’s travelled into Ballyrickard this morning for a very enjoyable mornings football. Our 3 teams played 4 matches each and showed off all their skills. A big thanks to Padraig and Kerins O’Rahillys for hosting us.

U8 Girls/U10 Girls

Well done everyone on a great session this morning and to the U8 girls that joined us.!! The girls are improving week on week and are really developing their skills. We were low on numbers this morning due to the u9s playing in Strand Road so we worked on our passing and shooting which was very impressive from the all the girls. This week’s POTW was Elsie who again is showing massive progress in skills. We hope to have a blitz next Saturday in Strand Road so keep up the good work.

U12 Girls

Our girls trained on Wednesday and Sunday this week. We worked on our tackle technique and defending in one-on-one situations which we brought into games in both sessions. We also worked on kicking on Sunday with some big improvements with some girls. We host Milltown/Castlemaine in the last round of our U12 County Go Games this coming Tuesday at 7pm. Looking forward to seeing all the girls there.

Minors

St Pats/Kerins O’Rahillys play in Round 1 of the Keane’s SuperValu Minor Club Championship against Annascaul/Lispole Monday 8th of July at 7pm in Strand Road.

The Senior team.

Senior

Our seniors get promoted to Division 4 after one point win. This game was incredibly important for both teams, as the whistle blew to begin the game you could feel the electricity off the players and crowd in the stand.

Three points from Dr Crokes had them in the lead in the first few minutes of the game, a point from Jack Moriarty allowed our scoring to begin. With Dr Crokes determined to keep their lead they added another three points.

With a point each coming from Eoin Greaney and Jack Moriarty it allowed for the gap to close a little. Increasing pressure not to allow Dr Crokes to go ahead pushed St Pats to edge towards their opponents and push them back when trying to score.

One more point from Dr Crokes and one more point from our own Eoin Greaney brought the game to a three-point difference going to the end of the first half. St Pats 0-04 Dr Crokes 0-07

The second half was a do or die for our seniors, Dr Crokes came out with a strong first few minutes with a point and goal scored.

With the goal going in, you would think this is their game to win but our seniors stepped up and showed what teamwork can accomplish. Brendan Poff with the speed of a greyhound made his way up the field helped along the way by Tomas O’Sullivan, Jack Moriarty, Conor Enright, and Ben Sharp to shake the back of Dr Crokes net.

He also added a point onto his tally, with a newfound energy the ball travelled up the field once more where Jack Moriarty laid the ball off into the waiting hands of Brendan Poff where he once more rattled Dr Crokes net.

Eoin Greaney and Paudie Bailey each added much needed points. Dr Crokes got another point which brought the game to a point difference, in the final minutes Dr Crokes were awarded a free which could spell the end of our promotion. The ball hit the cross bar and was taking up the field to which the final whistle blew sealing our senior’s promotion to Division 4 next year.

St Pats Team: Paudie Bailey, Dylan Griffin, Eoin O’Carroll, Luke Mulligan, Ben Sharp, Tommy Nicholson, Niall McCarthy, Conor Moore ©, Brendan Poff, Conor Enright, Tomas O’Sullivan, Darragh Moriarty, Jack Moriarty, Eoin Greaney and Gary Savage.

Subs Used: David Moriarty for Dylan Griffin, Brian Murphy for Conor Enright, Liam O’Sullivan for Tomas O’Sullivan, Colin Doody for Darragh Moriarty and Liam Poff for Gary Savage.

Tralee Parnells GAA Club News

.
Tralee Parnells U16 girls who played Ballyduff.

U16 Camogie
Well done to our U16’s Camogie Team who met Ballyduff in round 6 of the County League on Friday evening in atrocious conditions in Parc na Darach.

During patches of sunshine we saw some fantastic skill from both sides. Thanks you to Ballyduff for a competitive game and to John Ross for refereeing the game and braving the bad weather!

Munster Camogie Poc Fada
Well done to Shauna Harris and Anna Chute who competed in the Munster Camogie Puck Fada at Thurles Racecourse last week.

The girls were both highly competitive in their categories. Congratulations to Roisín Ferncombe from Tipperary Camogie Club and County Development who won the U16’s category and to Anna Kearney from Cork Camogie who won the Adult event.

Our thanks to Munster Camogie for organising another great event and a great experience for all. Shauna and Anna did their Club and County proud!

Senior Hurling
Our senior hurlers were up against St Brendan’s of Ardfert in the County Senior Hurling Quarter final.

Parnells started well to lead in the opening minutes with a point from Cathal Dunne.  However, St Brendan’s soon settled into the game with a flurry of scores.  Parnells found some form with scores from Sean Healy, Cathal Dunne, and two from Oisin O’Brien.

With a half time score of 1-09 to 0-05 Parnells needed get a good start to the second half.
Unfortunately this was not the case with St Brendan’s really finding form in the second half.  With tough battles all over the field Parnells were struggling to find scores.

With points from Oisin O’Brien and Eddie Sheehy and a last minute goal by Tadgh Brick the game ended on a scoreline of  St. Brendan’s 2-21 Tralee Parnells 1-08.

As the first year playing at Senior level comes to an end the team and management can be very proud.  While results did not go our way the experience gained has been invaluable. As the saying goes, Rome wasn’t built in a day.

Minor Hurling
Our minor hurlers had a comprehensive win at the weekend over Causeway/Abbeydorney in the division one County League.

Summer Camp
The club will hold a summer Hurling and Camogie camp for children aged 5 to 13.  The camp will run from Monday 29th to Wednesday 31st July from 10am to 1pm at Caherslee GAA grounds.  Spaces are limited so secure your child’s spot now at https://member.clubforce.com/memberships_cart_m.asp?LL_ID=3011. €20 for Club members, €40 non club members.  Any club member who brings along a non-member friend will have their €20 fee refunded.

Páirc Na Darach.

Over the past few months a dedicated team of volunteers have been busy beavering away to improve our Páirc Na Darach pitch at the sports complex.  The pitch has been sanded and spiked with loose stones removed and holes repaired.

The team met on Monday evenings over the past few months to carry out various jobs including moving the storage container, clearing weeds, improving the perimeter fence…etc.  On behalf of everyone the club we would like to say a huge thank you to this team.  We now have an excellent facility dedicated to club activities.

Billy Ryle: Be Sure To Apply On Time For SUSI Grants

.

College is expensive so apply to SUSI for your college grant by July 11 for priority assessment says Billy Ryle…

It’s difficult to integrate into college life if you’re making a daily return commute from Kerry to Limerick or Cork.

But that’s the only option facing many students who can’t afford to meet the cost of accommodation.

Rental accommodation, alone, has increased by 60% in the cities during the past five years, putting most of it beyond the reach of students. With rent spiralling out of control, deserving students, who have studied hard to achieve a college place, struggle to pay for college.

Continued below…

.

Further and third level education is very expensive. The financial burden is eased a little for students who qualify for a partial or total grant. Even so, many college students have to work part-time or depend on their parents to make ends meet.

Thousands of students who are ineligible for funding must come up with about €12,000 annually if they are living away from home or about €5,000 if living at home. The student contribution has also to be paid.

Student Universal Support Ireland (SUSI) is Ireland’s higher and further education grants awarding body.

Student grants are divided into maintenance grants and fee grants. Maintenance grants are paid directly to the student’s bank account.

Continued below…

.

Fee grants pay tuition fees, the student contribution and the cost of essential field trips. SUSI grants are available at PLC, undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

To be eligible for a grant, an applicant must meet a nationality criterion, a residency criterion, an education progression criterion and an approved course criterion, all of which are mere formalities for most applicants.

To be eligible for funding, your total household reckonable income must fall below specific income thresholds. The SUSI website contains tables outlining the income thresholds and the associated maintenance grant rates for applicants.

The minimum distance from home to college for the higher grant (non-adjacent) eligibility is 30km.  About 80,000 students should be eligible for some level of standard maintenance grants ranging from €612 to €4,292.

The maximum standard non-adjacent maintenance grant payable in the 24/25 academic year will be €4,292. For students who live less than 30km from their college, the standard maximum adjacent grant is €1,774.

The gross annual income level for grant eligibility is €40,875 (less than four dependent children), €44,810 (between four and seven children) or €48,575 (between eight or more dependent children).

Income thresholds increase by €4,950 for each additional family member in college. The amount of non-assessed holiday income that a student can earn per annum is €7,925.

There is also a special maintenance grant for applicants whose annual gross income is less than €26,200 (less than four dependent children), €28,715 (between four and seven children) or €31,128 (eight or more dependent children). That payment is €7,586, non-adjacent and €3,230, adjacent, respectively.

SUSI is prioritising new grant applications until 11th July. SUSI will process late applications but its best to be on the priority applications list. Submit your online grant application as soon as possible.

Applicants are assessed on gross income from all sources in the 2023 financial year. Applications are assessed as either a ‘dependent,’ ‘mature dependent’ or ‘independent’ application. A dependent applicant is assessed on the income of parents or guardians, while an independent applicant is assessed on personal income and that of her/his partner.

As the grant is means-tested, visit the eligibility reckoner on www.susi.ie. This facility provides potential applicants with an approximate indication of whether or not they are likely to qualify for a grant.

However, it’s always advisable to submit a grant application. Even if you don’t currently qualify, your financial circumstances may change going forward.

Before you start your application, create an account in your SUSI student portal. You will be asked for your Personal Public Service Number (PPSN), Name, Date of Birth, Email address and Phone number. Create your log in details where you can set up your username, password and security pin. Then carefully complete the interactive application form. Once you have submitted a grant application you can follow its progress on the SUSI Online Application Tracker.

Further information on state funding can be found on www.studentfinance.ie. Most of the institutions also offer a range of scholarships for excellence in areas such as academic, sport, creative arts and entrepreneurship.

Colleges also operate a Student Assistance Fund for students experiencing financial difficulty during term. Watch out also for local scholarships such as Credit Union Scholarships available to members.

If at all possible, avoid taking out a student loan, but if you must then the best rates are available from your local Credit Union.

PHOTOS: Aspen Grove Staff Join Tralee Tidy Towns For Cockleshell Clean-Up

COCKLESHELL beach was a hive of activity last Friday when 28 Aspen Grove staff members joined Tralee Tidy Towns on a massive clean up of the area from Cockleshell to the Lock Gates car park.

Tralee Tidy Towns has adopted Cockleshell as part of their Clean Coasts programme and this is the third clean up in the last year.

Nine bags of litter were collected on the morning and micro plastics made up most of the haul. The Kerry County Council Tralee MD team picked up the bags once the clean up concluded.

Continued below…

.

Tralee Tidy Towns members gave a short talk about the importance of cleaning this litter from the beach and the impact of marine litter on the wildlife that depends on Cockleshell, part of the Tralee Bay Complex Special Protection Area, classified under the (European) Birds Directive.

20,000 birds, many of them migratory and endangered, regularly visit over winter in Tralee Bay and are at risk from ingesting small plastic particles or becoming entangled in plastic nets or other debris.

Mike McAuliffe, CEO of Aspen Grove said: “For the Aspen team, community is very important and at the core of everything we do. We are delighted to support the excellent work of Tralee Tidy Towns which helps to maintain this beautiful area that we are privileged to live and work in.”

Anne Marie Fuller of Tralee Tidy Towns said: “We are very pleased to have such a large show of support from Aspen Grove on this clean up – it is heartening to have this number of people offer their time and it allowed us to do a very thorough clean up of this important area. This clean up builds on the work we started on the last Clean Coasts Big Beach Clean and works towards fulfilling our commitment to keeping Cockleshell Beach, which is such a beautiful area, marine-plastic free.  We would also extend a thank you to Clean Coasts for their clean up kit and to Kerry County Council Tralee MD for taking care of the bags collected.”

Of course, with the marvellous indoor sports hall, they could always head indoors if the elements proved too harsh. Another great week then and we called on Friday to catch the fun on the final day of the camp. Scroll down for photos…

Dan Kearney reports on the TG4 All Ireland Quarter-Final played at Austin Stack Park on Saturday evening…

Kerry 0-16

Meath 0-8

Kerry cruised to an impressive double scores win over Meath to reach the TG4 All Ireland semi-final at windy Austin Stack Park in Tralee.

The winners had too much firepower in an accomplished performance that saw eight different players get on the scoresheet with Kerry outscoring the visitors by 0-12 to 0-3 in a superb second half.

Playing into the breeze in the first half, it was Kerry that took the game to Meath and registered the first score of the game from the boot of midfielder Mary O’Connell in the third minute.

Continued below…

.

Meath attacked but Emma Duggan’s free came off the crossbar and Megan Thynne shot wide straight after.

Kerry were less wasteful at the other end though and Danielle O’Leary slotted over to put them two ahead.

Niamh Ní Chonchúir was fouled in the 12th minute and Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh made no mistake from 25 metres to push Kerry three ahead but two minutes later Marion Farrelly, Meath’s most effective performer in the opening half, shot a fine individual score.

Ciara Smith shot over for the Royals a minute later, and they were really starting to grow into the game now with Farrelly forcing Kerry goalkeeper Ciara Butler into an outstanding save at the expense of a point to level matters at 0-3 apiece.

Corner back Ciara Murphy popped over a neat point for Kerry in the 20th minute to push them a point ahead but once again it was Farrelly on the mark for Meath in the 23rd minute to level the game at 0-4 each.

The last action of the first half fell to Emma Duggan who hit a beauty of a score from distance to see her side take a 0-5 to 0-4 lead in at the half time break.

Meath introduced former Footballer of the Year Vikki Wall at half time but after a typical run by her failed to yield a score, Kerry went on to slot over seven points on the trot with substitute Siofra O’Shea popping over two fine scores.

Continued below…

.

Niamh Gallogly shot a welcome point for Meath to bring the score to 0-11 to 0-6 but Kerry were relentless and with seven minutes left on the clock had pushed 0-15 to 0-7 ahead.

Monica McGuirk made a fine save from Emma Dineen at the expense of a point, but she had the final say when she punched over to seal a comprehensive win for Kerry to set up a semi-final meeting with either Armagh or Mayo who meet on Sunday.

Know Your Rights: Your Annual Leave Entitlements From Work

.

Know Your Rights has been compiled by Kerry Citizens Information Service which provides a free and confidential service to the public…

Many of us are looking forward to our summer holidays and some may have questions about their employment rights in relation to taking their annual leave. The following are some common queries which arise.

Should I be paid by my employer while I am on annual leave?

Annual leave is paid time off work. Holiday pay must be paid in advance at your normal weekly rate. If your pay changes from week-to-week (for example, because of commission or bonus payments), your holiday pay is the average of your pay over the 13 weeks before you take holidays.

Are all workers entitled to paid annual leave?

Yes, all employees are entitled to annual leave, including full-time, part-time, temporary and casual workers.

Continued below…

.

How much annual leave am I entitled to?

Your annual leave entitlement depends on how much time you have worked in a leave year.

The statutory leave year runs from 1st April to 31st March. Most employers use the calendar year (January to December) instead of the official leave year to calculate your entitlement for administrative reasons, but this does not affect your statutory leave entitlements. Your employer should tell you when your leave year begins and ends.

There are 3 ways to calculate your annual leave entitlement. You can use whichever method gives you the greater (biggest) entitlement

• If you have worked at least 1,365 hours in a leave year, you are entitled to the maximum of 4 working weeks’ paid annual leave. You cannot use this method if you changed employment during the leave year.
• Calculate 1/3 of a working week for each calendar month in which you worked at least 117 hours.
• Calculate 8% of the hours you worked in the leave year, subject to a maximum of 4 working weeks.

Continued below…

.

How do I calculate my annual leave if I am a part-time worker?

Generally, annual leave for part-time workers is calculated using option 3 above. This means you can get 8% of your hours worked. If you work full time for some months and part-time for the rest of the year, you should calculate the leave for the full-time and the part-time periods of work separately.

What happens my annual leave if I am off on Maternity leave or Parental Leave?

Annual leave is not affected by other types of statutory leave (that means leave provided for by law). Time spent on maternity leave, paternity leave, adoptive leave, parental leave, force majeure leave and the first 13 weeks of carer’s leave is treated as though you have been in employment.

For example, time spent on parental leave can be used to accrue (build up) your annual leave entitlement

What happens my annual leave if I leave my job?

If you are leaving a job without taking all the annual leave you are entitled to, your employer must pay you for the days you have not taken.

Can my employer force me to take annual leave?

Usually, employees can ask to take annual leave at specific times. Your employer can accept your request, or refuse your request. Your employer decides when annual leave may be taken, but this is subject to a number of conditions.

Your employer must take into account your family responsibilities, as well as the available opportunities for rest and recreation.

Your employer must discuss your annual leave with you (or your union) at least one month before you are to take the leave i.e. your employer cannot tell you on Friday that you must take annual leave the following week.

Can my employer offer to pay me extra in lieu of taking my annual leave?

It is illegal for an employer to pay an employee extra instead of allowing them take the minimum statutory annual leave entitlement, except where the employment ends and the employee has earned unused annual leave days. In that case the employer should pay the employee for any outstanding annual leave and public holidays.

What if I get sick while on annual leave?

If you are sick while you are on annual leave, you should get a medical certificate from your GP (doctor) as soon as possible to cover the days you were sick. Give the medical certificate to your employer as soon as you return to work.

This way, the sick days will not count as annual leave, and you can take your annual leave at a later date. Your employer cannot make you to take annual leave for time you were on certified sick leave.

Can I ‘carry over’ annual leave to next year?

Annual leave should be taken within the leave year. Depending on your employer, you can agree to take your annual leave within 6 months of the relevant leave year. Any further carrying-over (also called holding over) of annual leave would need to be agreed between you and your employer.

If you are on long-term sick leave and cannot take your annual leave due to illness, you can carry it over for up to 15 months after the end of the year it was earned. If you leave your job within these 15 months, you should get payment instead of the leave you did not take due to illness.

If you need further information about any of the issues raised here or you have other questions, you can drop-in to your local Citizens Information Service in Tralee, Killarney or Caherciveen – opening hours are listed on our website www.citizensinformation.ie

Finnegan On Films: Wrestling, Bond And A Denzel Masterclass On The Box

.

Our movie guy picks some of the best films on TV today and tonight…

We have decided to widen our scope for our Film Reviews especially as there is so much port on the television these weekends – and no harm in that either!

Ironically, my first selection has a sporting aspect.  Fighting with My Family (Saturday 9.30pm RTE1) is a really enjoyable, funny and uplifting story.

The daughter of a family of British wrestlers, Paige (Florence Pugh) gets the opportunity of a lifetime by being selected for training with the WWE.

Continued below…

.

Unfortunately, this causes some difficulties at home as her brother Zodiac (Jack Lowden) cannot quite match his sister’s achievements.

Directed and written by Stephen Merchant, this also stars Nick Frost, Lena Headey, Vince Vaughan and Dwayne Johnson, John Cena and a number of WWE wrestlers as this, believe it or not, is based on a true story.

When Brendan Met Trudy (Saturday 9.40pm TG4) is a much underrated Irish comedy.  Brendan (Peter McDonald) is a shy teacher who takes his job very seriously.  He has only two outlets in his life – his local church choir and the movies.

After rehearsal, he meets Trudy (Flora Montgomery) whom he takes to be a Montessori teacher, and they begin a relationship.  What Brendan does not realise is that Trudy is actually a burglar!

When Trudy asks Brendan to prove his love by assisting her on one of her jobs, Brendan is torn between his love for Trudy and doing the right thing.  What he also realises is that there is more to life than classical music and films. Written by Roddy Doyle and Directed by Kieron J. Walsh, this is highly recommended.

Denzel Washington won numerous awards, including the Best Actor Academy Award for Training Day (Saturday 10.30pm BBC One)

A Los Angeles cop, Jake Hoyt (Ethan Hawke) is partnered with a more experienced officer, Alonzo (Washington), on his first day in narcotics.  Alonzo holds no truck with following the rules and resorts to extreme measures to crack a case.

Hoyt has to battle his conscience in a very dangerous situation, which is set in a twenty four hour period.  This also stars Scott Glenn, Cliff Curtis, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dog, Harris Yulin and Tom Berenger

You can’t go wrong on a Sunday afternoon with a James Bond film.  Roger Moore makes his 007 debut in Live and Let Die (Sunday 6.10pm RTE2) as he investigates the murder of three British agents leading him to a connection with a Caribbean dictator and a Harlem Drug Kingpin.

Jimbo has to stop a fiendish plot to flood America with free heroin, and he does so in his customary suave approach, even while indulging in speed boat chases around the Bayou, leaping across the backs of crocodiles and, of course, romancing Jane Seymour as Solitaire.

This also stars Yaphet Kotto, Geoffrey Holder, David Hedison and Madeline Smith, and a memorable theme song by Paul and Linda McCartney and Wings. Great fun, but some of the attitudes and comments have not aged well.  Enjoy!
