THE Rose Escorts had a very active weekend in the Tralee area taking part in a special boot camp.

The 32 Benetti Menswear Escorts have been chosen for this year’s Rose of Tralee International Festival and they took to the beach in Banna for a number of physical and mental challenges.

They arrived to the Meadowlands Hotel in Tralee and ended up on Banna Beach running, jumping, swimming and having great fun.

The chosen men, aged between 21 to 30, will accompany the Roses in Tralee at this year’s Rose of Tralee International Festival from August 16th to 20th.

While the Rebel County has the highest representation with six Rose Escorts, it is followed by Kerry and Dublin and Armagh with three each while one young gentleman will travel all the way from Chicago to be a part of the fun in Tralee in August. Photographer Domnick Walsh captured the fun in the images below…

Kerins O’Rahillys GAA Club News

Seniors:

Our division 1 status was pushed deeper into jeopardy following Dingle’s victory on Saturday night when they defeated Milltown/Castlemaine in Dingle – Milltown are the first side to be  relegated as a result of this loss.

We currently sit on 6 points with our final game, away to Ballymac a must win game and even then victory might not be enough to save our status.

Dingle on 7 points entertain Spa who are already safe; An Ghaeltacht on 5 points play already relegated Milltown/Castlemaine whilst Legion, currently on 8 points must take something from their game away to Glenflesk.

It all promises to be a nail biting finale given that we could be relegated even if winning, could be safe if other results go our way or could even end up in a play off if Dingle draw or Legion lose.

Keep tuned in to X ( Twitter) on Sunday next, 23rd June  as the drama unfolds – all games are being played simultaneously @ 14.00

New Gym:

There was a large turnout in the Healy Room on Saturday night for the official opening of the new gym.

Chairman, Oliver Molloy thanked those who made it possible from the donations of JP & Noreen McManus to the fundraiser Last Man Standing plus the contributions of all the volunteers who worked wonders into making the gym the state of the art facility it is.

The ribbon was officially cut by Kay Hoffman and Róisin Healy, daughters of the late Pat Healy.

Academy:

Our Academy continued Sunday morning as usual with great numbers in attendance throughout each age group. Academy takes place every Sunday morning from 10am to 11am.  New members are always welcome to join.

Both our U8 and U10 Girls are travelling to Churchill next Sunday 23rd June for their next go games.

U11 Boys

U11 Boys:

Well done to our U11s on Thursday night who put in two great performances against Beaufort in Healy Park. Thanks to Beaufort for travelling in. Unfortunately training had to be cancelled on Saturday due to the weather.

U13 Boys

U13 Boys:

Not our day on Sunday  in the U13 B County Final against Ardfert in Blennerville.  The boys gave it their all against an extremely strong Ardfert B team.  Fionn Smith gave a powerful performance throughout and Eammon Murphy at the back both stood out.

Special mention to the five U11s who played tonight . The future looks bright for this group and this made us all very proud.

Final Score:

Ardfert B 5-10

KOR B 2-07

Do you have unwanted football boots, club jerseys/tops etc?

In a bid to reduce, reuse and recycle we are seeking donations! If you have some usable and clean unwanted gear that no longer fits your child and would like to donate, please bring it to Academy Sunday mornings. We will then have a stall setup over the coming weeks with all items received available to our members for a small donation.

Thank you :

The Juvenile Academy would like to thank everyone who supported their Bucket collection on Saturday that took place in Dunnes Horan Centre, Supervalu and Outside Der O Sullivan’s the Mall.

Massive thank you to all our volunteers who gave up their time to cover the slots and to our committee members for coordinating the whole day.  We really do have a great community within our club who all pull together when needed.

Ladies Notes:

U12 girls pictures with Chorca Dhuibhne

U12 Girls:

KOR U12 girls were back to winning ways against Chorca Dhuibhne on Wednesday evening. They had to come from behind after the first half but  found their range in the second half. Ellie-Marie was on fire kicking point after point with ease. Our backs were ferocious in defence and didn’t give the girls from back west an inch. It was a really good team performance where everyone worked so hard. Well done girls.

Kerins O’Rahillys Gaelic 4 Mothers & Others are hosting a Fundraising Quiz on Wednesday 19th June at 7:30pm in the Klub Bar. €40 per table of 4, winners will receive 4 x €25 One4All vouchers kindly sponsored by Quirke Security.

Fantastic Raffle prizes to be won on the night. So why not come along and support and test your knowledge?   Looking forward to seeing you all on the night.

Lotto results: Lotto Tue 11th June 2024. Numbers drawn were 18, 21, 23, 26. No winner. Lucky dip winners of €20 were Dónal Moynihan, Mary Golden, Ita Behan, Katherine Duggan, Máire Coleman. Our next draw will be tomorrow night and the jackpot will be €2,100. Why not try your luck in our lotto. The links is as follows: https://www.klubfunder.com/Clubs/Na%20Gaeil%20CLG/lotto

RIP: Our sincere sympathy to John & Eamon Browne and the extended Browne & McAuliffe families on the passing of Margaret (Peg) McAuliffe of Ballyduff last week. May she rest in peace.

U7s: Our U7’s enjoyed training in sunny Killeen on Sunday morning. Great to see the skills developing. A big welcome to our new players. Next Sunday we travel to Rathmore for our GoGame. Training continues on Thursday evening at 6:00pm.

U11 Boys: Well done to our under 11 boys who put in two strong performances against Listowel last Thursday evening. Thanks to Listowel for travelling and for helping to serve up two cracking games of football. The lads trained hard yesterday morning in preparation for their upcoming games against St. Senans on Thursday. Well done boys!

U13 Boys: U13 Div.1 County League Final. Na Gaeil 2.13 Milltown 0.15. A great victory for our u13s in an enthralling game in John Mitchels last night. Na Gaeil were 9-7 down at half time to a very strong Milltown team. Andy Costello unerring accuracy from play and frees, our strong defensive play and Ben O Sullivan’s brilliant goal keeping were the key factors keeping us in the game at half time.

We had the breeze at our backs in the 2nd half and with that came a better attacking display. We got our noses in front early in the second half after excellent build up play, Andy finished to the net.

Milltown to their credit never gave in and reduced the lead down to 1 point. The crucial moment of the game came when Rory squared a ball that Ben punched to the net to extend our lead once again to 4 points.

We hung on till the end due to some excellent defending and work rate. The final whistle was met with tremendous celebrations before Eanna accepted the cup. We are so proud of all 42 players on the panel. Thanks to the coaches and parents for everything they have done so far this year.

Senior Men: Last Saturday night our seniors welcomed Gneeveguilla to Killeen for a back-game in the Credit Union Co. League. Both sides were missing a number of regulars but it still proved to be a competitive encounter with the majority of the game’s scores coming from play.

The visitors got off the mark first and had 2 points on the board before Damien Bourke got through for a point. Oisín O’Sullivan who was starting his first senior game for Na Gaeil drew us level and this was quickly followed by 2 more points from play by Enda O’Connor & Ruairí Ó hAiniféin.

But by the 16th minute Gneeveguilla had drawn level. The next score didn’t arrive until the 24th minute but it was a big score for Na Gaeil. An effort at a point came back off the upright and was gathered by the alert Peter Doyle who finished it to the net.

A free from Oisín O’Sullivan extended our lead to 4 points but Gneeveguilla had the last point of the half to leave it 1-5 to 0-5 at the break. Gneeveguilla really got into their stride at the start of the 2nd half and had levelled the game with 3 quick points.

It was the 14th minute before another point from Oisín O’Sullivan put us ahead once more and this was quickly followed by a point apiece from Enda O’Connor and Ruairí Ó hAiniféin to leave us ahead by 3 once more.

Gneeveguilla weren’t done though and in the space of 4 minutes had added 1-2 to their total to put them in the driving seat with just 7 minutes of normal time left. Our lads battled back and two Mark Lynch frees and another point from Oisín O’Sullivan edged us ahead by 1.

Unfortunately, we couldn’t keep the East Kerry men out for the remaining few minutes and they added a late equalizer to ensure the spoils were shared. Final score: Na Gaeil 1-11, Gneeveguilla 1-11.

Team: Jack Rogers, Enda O’Connor, Ryan O’Neill, Seán Barrett, Jack Doyle, Fergal Barry, Seamus Looney, Tomás O’hAiniféin, Damien Bourke, Peter Doyle, Andrew Barry, Kieran O’Donovan, Mark Lynch, Ruairí ÓhAiniféin, Oisín O’Sullivan. Subs: Shane Daly, Aaron Dewey, Jack Costello, Kevin O’Donoghue, Shawn Duggan, Darragh Devine, Seán O’Connor.

Under 13 Boys – It was a momentous week for both our U13 teams as they captured their respective county league titles. First up was our Green team who got the dream venue of Stacks Park  for a local derby against Kerins O’Rahillys on Sunday evening . Deciding to play into a strong wind in the first half, we entered the break 3 points down against a very game opponent .

We took an early knock as Strand Road goaled early into the second half, however our fellas are made of strong stuff and rattled off the next 7 scores including 2 goals to take a 5 point lead going into injury time. Strand Road never gave up and drew it back to just 3 points by the final whistle.

In great scenes, the players, mentors and supporters poured onto the pitch at the final whistle to celebrate. The team entered the stand lead by captain Eddie Carmody  for the presentation of the trophy, Eddie gave a fantastic speech and led the celebrations back on the field . A thank you to Strand Road for a fantastic game of football . Also a word of thanks to Coiste na Nog.

Part two of our fantastic week took place on Ballyrickard  on Wednesday night,  when our Gold team faced Ballymac in their County Final .

In front of a large crowd, Mitchels got out of the blocks early and by half time were 8 points up. However Ballymac showing great resilience with some great scores brought the lead back to just one, but just like the Green team on Sunday night our boys showed great courage and resolve and scored an all important goal with a few minutes to go and we ran out 5 point winners . Again some great scenes as we completed the double!

Captain Ruairí O Callaghan accepted the trophy from Cathy McCarthy and gave a very impressive speech for an 11 year old . Big thank you to Ballymac  for a super game of football. Special mention to coaches Aaron, Eoinie K, Eoin, Brendan ,TJ and Daniel for a fantastic achievement on the double and for their huge commitment. Training details will be issued during the week for next week.

U13

Churchill 5-9
St Pats 1-10

A lovely sunny evening in Churchill for football this evening as our u13s made the trip. We started the match well taking a quick lead with a well taken point from Noah.

A few quick scores from the hosts quickly the hosts a bit more comfortable but great leadership shown by Rian and Hugh Costello helped us get back into the game with Tommy Costello also rising highest under a high ball for our goal.

Some excellent interceptions from Darragh Flahive and Cillian Enright kept us on the front foot towards the end of the first half and we went into the break still very much in the game.
The tiredness began to creep into our game in the second half, except for Thomas who made it his personal mission to run over every blade of grass on the pitch.

Our backs gave us a good platform for counter attacks with Darragh Murphy and Paddy regularly beating their men to the ball to start the breaks. Ultimately the test was too much for our players who fought bravely throughout.
A performance to be proud of definitely and something to build on in weeks to come.

Minors

Our minors St Pats/Kerins O’Rahillys play against Annascaul/Lispole for Round 1 of the Keane’s Minor Football Championship Group D. Other Teams in this group are Kilcummin, St Senan’s, Finuge, Duagh, Knock/Brosna and Beale.

Tralee Parnells GAA Club News

Tralee Parnells Senior hurlers that lined out in their first ever Senior Hurling Championship match vs Lixnaw in Austin Stacks Park last Friday night

Senior Hurling
Last Friday night in Austin Stacks Park, our Senior hurlers made history as they made a return to the County Senior Hurling Championship after a century long break.

Their opponents in Group 2 were Lixnaw, last year’s beaten finalists. And what an occasion it was! After an incredible effort by the team, short 9 starters from last year’s victorious Intermediate Championship winning team, they came up just short, losing on a final score of Lixnaw 0-16 Tralee Parnells 0-14.

With the clock in injury time, Parnells had a chance to level the game but captain Tadhg Brick’s effort just tailed wide of the upright. Lixnaw then sealed victory with the last puck of the game.

Everyone in the club is very proud of the effort put in by players and Management. As was stated in the match report following the game, Parnells “have marked their arrival in senior hurling with … a performance that screams that they belong here”.

Next up in Round 2 of the SHC, Parnells play Abbeydorney at 6:30pm on Sunday 23rd in Austin Stacks Park. The team had great support last Friday and we again encourage everyone to come along to support the lads.

TRALEE PARNELLS: Ronan Gilsenan, Andrew Morrissey, Darragh Keane, Jonathan Lowe, Darragh Maloney, Tadgh Brick, Niall Cassidy, Morgan Madden 0-1, Enda O’Connor, Cillian O’Riordan, Stephen Morrissey, John Sherman, Eddie Sheehy 0-1, Gearoid O’Doherty 0-5 (5f), Oisin O’Brien 0-7 (5f). Subs: Johnny Downey for J Lowe (47), Shane Healy for J Sherman (48), Sean Woulfe for S Morrissey (55).

 Féile na nGael 2024
Another significant milestone in the club’s history will take place in Wexford next Saturday 22nd June when both our under 15 hurling and camogie teams participate in the national Féile na nGael competition.

This is a remarkable achievement for our young athletes, showcasing their talent and dedication to Hurling and Camogie. The boys will play Bunclody of Wexford and Trim of Meath in Group 2 Division 2 in Bunclody.

The girls will play Crossmaglen of Armagh, St Anne’s of Waterford and Gusserane O’Rahillys of Wexford in the group stages of Div 3. Parnells have brought home national Feile titles in the last 2 years, so fingers crossed for both squads and we have no doubt they will do the club proud. Safe travelling to all players, mentors and supporters.

If anyone still wants to contribute to our ongoing fundraiser to offset the substantial expenses of sending both teams to Wexford, ensuring that our players can proudly represent Tralee Parnells on the national stage, you can do so on the gofundme page https://gofund.me/e01d6f03

Dan Kearney reports on the TG4 All-Ireland SFC clash in Killarney on Saturday…

Kerry 4-13

Waterford 0-9

Kerry secured their quarter final place in the race for the TG4 All-Ireland SFC as they eased to a 16-point victory over Waterford at Fitzgerald Stadium in a one-sided encounter.

Kerry, playing with a strong breeze in the first half blew the Waterford challenge away with some power-packed football and led by 2-10 to 0-3 at half time.

It took the home side a while to get going but when they did Waterford had no answer to their pace, movement and finishing power.

Continued below…

.

Central to Kerry’s dominance was the dismantling of Waterford’s kickouts with Evelyn O’Brien finding it extremely difficult to find a white jersey.

Kerry led by 1-2 to 0-1 after 10 minutes with Hannah O’Donoghue getting on the end of a brilliant combination with Emma Dineen to finish smartly to the back of the net.

Danielle O’Leary added a score from the kickout and with the brilliant O’Donoghue slotting a brace of points straight afterwards, Waterford were under all sorts of pressure.

O’Donoghue turned provider to feed Danielle O’Leary for Kerry’s second goal in the 22nd minute and points followed from Niamh Ní Chonchúir, Aishling O’Connell, Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh, and Hannah O’Donoghue with Waterford’s reply coming from boot of Kelly Ann Hogan on the stroke of half time.

Continued below…

.

Waterford made a bright start to the second half with Eve Power and Mairead O’Brien claiming early points.

Half time substitute Siofra O’Shea hit the Waterford net after being fed by Niamh Ní Chonchúir in the 36th minute to put Kerry 3-11 to 0-6 ahead and it was difficult to see Waterford coming back into the contest.

The marauding TG4 Player of the Match Aishling O’Connell struck her second point of the game a minute later but Waterford kept going and Ciara Butler was forced into a fine save from Emma Murray before Eve Power hit her second point of the game.

Both sides ran their bench as the game petered out in the final quarter but there was one final act when Siofra O’Shea fed Emma Dineen for an easy finish to the back of the net.

Waterford must now beat Donegal in next week’s encounter if they are to advance from the group.

Aidan To Scale The Heights Of Kerry This Week For Charity

.
Aidan Ennis is climbing mountains in Kerry this week.

THE people of Kerry are being urged to come out in force to support one of Ireland’s best known endurance athletes as he finishes an ambitious challenge he set himself to help a small Irish charity working in Kenya.

56-year-old Aidan Ennis put a plan in place to climb all 275 mountains in Ireland (with a height of 600metres and above) in one continuous hike to raise funds for Brighter Communities Worldwide, who works in partnership with local communities in Kenya.

Already Aidan has completed much of his 48-day challenge, traversing mountain ranges throughout the country in the tough and gruelling charity endeavour, and this coming week (June 15-22) sees him in Kerry where he will climb Kerry’s beautiful but gruelling mountain ranges.

Continued below…

.

Not only will he climb all the mountains in the country over 600 metres, but he also plans to run from one mountain range to the next, adding to the gruelling nature of the challenge.

He chose Kerry to finish saying it “is a spectacularly stunning county and I love the wildness of the mountain ranges there, they offer so much variety so it will be a great end to my mountain challenge on Brandon Head in Kerry”.

Aidan took on the challenge to help The BIG Walk’ which will see people complete 10,000 KM, the distance from Ireland to Kenya, from now until October in a bid to highlight the work it does in healthcare, sanitation and economic empowerment.

He says “Brighter Communities Worldwide is a hugely deserving charity, they work incredibly hard and their work over the past two decades has been tangible, all the while improving the lives of the people with whom they work in partnership with in Kenya. They have chosen 10,000km – as the target to reach between now and the end of October and so the kilometres I will run up by climbing every mountain in Ireland, a total of some 2332 KM is going to help quite a lot”.

“I will camp out most nights, with some nights in towns and cities in B&B or guest houses where I will pick up supplies for the next few days of the hike. My wife, Emily and our 11-year-old son Alex will meet up with me with our VW Camper on some weekends also”.

“The people of Kerry are so generous and giving and I am really hoping they get behind me on this challenge, meet me along the route and donate a little to help a lot”.

Know Your Rights: Child Abuse And Child Protection

.

Know Your Rights has been compiled by Kerry Citizens Information Service which provides a free and confidential service to the public…

Ciara O’Gorman, Development Manager with South Munster Citizens Information Service spoke recently about the issue of child abuse and child protection in the State.

Under the Children First Act 2015, it is everyone’s responsibility to protect children and young people and keep them safe. It is important that families, communities and professionals can recognise when a child or young person is being harmed and that they know what action to take in response.

What is child abuse?

Child abuse is categorised into 4 different types. A child may experience more than one form of abuse. The 4 types of abuse are neglect, emotional abuse, physical abuse and sexual abuse.

Neglect

Neglect occurs when a child does not get proper care or supervision to the extent that the child is harmed physically or developmentally. Ongoing neglect is recognised as being extremely harmful to the development and well-being of a child and may have serious long-term negative consequences.

Continued below…

.

Some of the features of child neglect include:

• Children being left alone without adequate care and supervision
• Malnourishment, lacking food, unsuitable food or erratic feeding
• Failure to provide adequate care for the child’s medical and developmental needs
• Inadequate living conditions – unhygienic conditions, environmental issues, including lack of adequate heating and furniture
• Lack of adequate clothing, Inattention to basic hygiene
• Lack of protection and exposure to danger or lack of supervision appropriate to the child’s age
• Persistent failure to attend school

Emotional abuse

Emotional abuse occurs where a child’s need for affection, approval and security is not being met by the child’s parents or carer. Emotional abuse is not easy to recognise because the effects are not easily seen.

The effects of emotional abuse on a child may be shown through the child’s behaviour, emotional state or development.

Ciara elaborates, “Emotional abuse of a child may include rejection, lack of comfort and love, lack of continuity of care, continuous lack of praise and encouragement, persistent criticism, sarcasm, hostility or blaming of the child, bullying, conditional parenting in which care or affection of a child depends on his or her behaviours or actions, extreme overprotectiveness, inappropriate non-physical punishment (for example, locking a child in bedroom), ongoing family conflicts and family violence and seriously inappropriate expectations of a child relative to their age and stage of development.”

Continued below…

.

Physical abuse

Physical abuse is when someone deliberately hurts a child physically or puts them at risk of being physically hurt. It may occur as a single incident or as a pattern of incidents.  Examples of physical abuse include beating, slapping, hitting or kicking, pushing, shaking or throwing, use of excessive force in handling, deliberate poisoning, fabricated/induced illness and female genital mutilation.

Sexual abuse

Sexual abuse occurs where a child is used by someone for their own or someone else’s sexual gratification or arousal. It includes the child being involved in sexual acts or exposing the child to sexual activity directly or through pornography.

How do you recognise child abuse?

You may have observed signs of abuse or have grounds for concern such as, where a child has a suspicious injury or appears distressed for no obvious reason. If you ignore what may be signs or symptoms of abuse, it could result in ongoing harm to the child.

Alternatively, a child may make a direct or indirect disclosure. A child needs to have someone they can trust in order to feel able to disclose abuse they may be experiencing. They need to know that they will be believed and will get the help they need.

You should always inform Tusla (the Child and Family Agency) if you are concerned that a child may have been, is being, or is at risk of being abused or neglected.

Ciara confirms “It is not necessary for you to prove that abuse has occurred to report a concern to Tusla. You just need to have reasonable grounds for concern. It is then up to Tusla to assess concerns that are reported to it.”

How do I report my concerns?

Tusla has a statutory responsibility to assess all reports of child welfare and protection concerns. Anyone who suspects that a child is being abused, or is at risk of abuse, has a duty to report their suspicions to Tusla. You should report your concerns to the Tusla Social Work Duty Officer in the area the child lives.

You can report your concerns in person, by writing or by phone. While you can report your concerns anonymously, Tusla does not normally reveal the names of people who report suspicions of child abuse unless they have permission to do so.

What happens after a report is received by Tusla?

Tusla will consider your report, and if concerns are found after the initial checks, further evaluation involving a detailed examination of the child and family’s circumstances will follow.

It will then take whatever action is required to protect the child.  If no concerns are found, then the information gathered is recorded and kept on a confidential file where it will be examined if further concerns or more information comes to light.

If you need to report your concerns outside normal office hours (weekends and at night) you should report your concerns to the Garda Síochána.  Remember, under the Protections for Persons Reporting Child Abuse Act 1998, as long as you report what you believe to be true and you do it in good faith you, cannot be sued for making a false or malicious report.

If you make a report about a child, Tusla will normally acknowledge it, and may contact you for further information, if necessary. It is understandable that you would like to be assured that the matter is being followed up.

However, to protect the privacy of the child and family, it may not be possible for Tusla to inform you of the progress or outcome of Tusla’s contact with the child or family.

Are parents informed if concerns are reported?

If you are the parent of a child being assessed following the reporting of concerns, you should be told why and you should be given the opportunity to respond. Concerns about your child should be explained to you.

Finnegan On Films: Cult War Movie And Scorcese Classic On The Box

.

Our movie guy, James Finnegan, has a couple of good recommendations for you viewing pleasure on the box today…

Kelly’s Heroes (Saturday 3pm RTE1) is in a rather limited genre, that of comedy war film.

A rag bag collection of World War Two American soldiers decide to rob a bank holding significant deposits of gold bars, sixteen million dollars worth in fact, in a village deep inside German occupied France.

The tone of the film is more sixties and there is a fine cast of Clint Eastwood, Telly Savalas, Don Rickles, Carroll O’Connor and Donald Sutherland, the latter in full hippie mode.

Eastwood’s experience on this film was so disappointing that from then on he would take more control on his future projects, producing most of his following films and directing many of them.

Continued below…

.

Also, when you see the true reality of war every day on the news, it is not easy to watch a comedy version.

My granddaughters loves horses so their evening will be made with Spirit Untamed (Saturday 6.35pm RTE1).

Young Lucky Prescott moves to a sleepy little town from the city, where she befriends a wild mustang, the aforementioned Spirit, who shares her rebellious nature.

When a heartless wrangler plans to capture Spirit and his herd, Lucky and her new friends must rescue them, thereby embark on the adventure of a lifetime in this animated adventure starring the vocal talents of Jake Gyllenhall, Marsai Martin and Isabela Merced

A significant change in tone comes with The Delinquent Season (Saturday 9.40pm RTE1).

Academy Award Winner Cillian Murphy, Andrew Scott, Catherine Walker and Eva Birthistle are all terrific in this tense drama set in suburban Dublin.

Two couples appear to be living in seemingly perfect marriages, until cracks start to appear in them, as each individual is fighting a different battle that no one else can see.

Continued below…

.

Taxi Driver (Saturday 10pm TG4) is, frankly, the must see film of the weekend, in this Martin Scorsese’s iconic and hugely influential classic drama.

Vietnam veteran Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro) observers the squalid side of life on the New York streets from his taxi, but he sees potential redemption when he notices teenage prostitute Iris (Jodie Foster.

His chronic insomnia fuels his paranoia and he becomes increasingly disturbed and ultimately driven to a brutal act of violence.

Noted for the iconic improvisation scene when De Niro imagines a confrontation in a mirror, but Scorsese really excels at showing Bickle as crazy, yet with an almost understandable reason from his warped perspective.

Rialto (Saturday 11.45pm RTE1) stars Tom Vaughan-Lawlor as Colm, a forty something husband and father of two, grieving the death of his father

His life takes a further downward hit when he is made redundant from his managerial job at the docks.

When Colm experiences his first homosexual experience with a young sex worker, his family life comes under increasing strain.

A difficult story but handled sensitively by Director Peter Mackie Burns and Writer Mark O’Halloran as well as the central performance of Tom Vaughan-Lawlor. Enjoy!

REPORT: Kerry FC Enjoy Home Win Over Longford Town

.

By David Moriarty

KERRY FC 2-1 LONGFORD TOWN

Kerry FC were back in action on the unusual Thursday evening slot as they faced Longford Town at home in Mounthawk Park.

The last time the two faced each other was in Bishopsgate as Longford took the three points on the May Bank Holiday Monday. Ryan Kelliher’s overhead goal of the month contender was only a consolation as the Town took a deserved victory on the day.

Longford’s last visit to Tralee ended in a 3-0 defeat which was a historic win for Kerry FC as they won their first ever League of Ireland game in their home ground.

Continued below…

.

It was a wet and windy game at the start of April but that did not bother the Kerry FC fans as they were in full voice at the final whistle as a huge weight had been taken off of the team’s shoulders.

Kerry FC were looking for their third home win in a row after wins against Finn Harps and Treaty United has made Mounthawk Park a difficult place to visit for visiting teams.

The evening saw Aaron O’Sullivan start his first game of the season as he replaced Antonio Tuta in between the sticks. Nathan Gleeson replaced Daniel Okwute on the right wing as Okwute picked up a suspension due to an accumulation of yellow cards.

Kerry started on the front foot right from the off. Ryan Kelliher tested the waters in the first minute with a shot from distance, but it did not have much power or pace on it and rolled easily into the hands of Longford Town goalkeeper Jack Brady.

Kerry were on top for the majority of the opening twenty minutes with Longford only having possession in defensive areas to show for themselves.

Continued below…

.

The increasing pressure on Longford Town eventually caved for the away side when Ryan Kelliher put Kerry ahead in the twenty-sixth minute.

Kerry opened space for themselves on the left side of the pitch and a pass from Sean McGrath gave Cian Brosnan acres of space to brilliantly pick out Kelliher at the near post who gave the most delicate of flicks into the bottom right corner.

A fantastic finish from Kerry’s number 9 and much deserved Kerry FC goal to put the home side one nil up.

Ronan Teahan had the chance to double the Kerry FC lead moments later. A pass from Sean McGrath went behind the number 8 but he did very well to sort his feet out and get the shot off, although it was straight at Brady it was still a tough save to make, and he did so very well to put the ball over the bar and out for a corner which consequently led to nothing.

Even with all the Kerry FC pressure, they would concede their third goal from a corner in two games as Longford equalised through Karl Chambers two minutes before halftime.

The corner was taken on the left side of the pitch and Chambers got in front at the near post and directed his header brilliantly into the far corner to give Longford Town a lifeline heading into the break.

Nathan Gleeson nearly put Kerry FC back ahead six minutes after the restart after a lovely cross from Sean McGrath on the left wing found Gleeson.

His first touch was excellent, and his shot unfortunately hit the post. He had another bite of the cherry but was blocked superbly by Dean O’Shea.

It was quite cagey from that point on with Longford starting to get a foothold on the game. They had a couple of near chances but nothing really to trouble Aaron O’Sullivan in the Kerry FC goal.

Kerry seemed to have put all their energy into the first-half performance as chances in the second half were few and far between. It only needed one big chance from either side in the closing stages of the game to get the three points.

With seven minutes to play in the second half, Kerry FC got themselves back into the lead through yet another goal from Ryan Kelliher. Kevin Williams did great work on the right side to feed the ball through to Sean McGrath in a dangerous position.

The chance looked like it had slipped away but McGrath picked out a great cross to an unmarked Ryan Kelliher in the six-yard box to fire home and regain the lead for the home side.

Kevin Williams was in action at both ends as he then headed the ball out for a corner in a dangerous time in the game with only a minute of stoppage time to play. Longford were doing their best to spoil the party in Mounthawk Park before Sean McGrath broke away with the ball in a one-on-one with Jack Brady.

Unfortunately for McGrath, Brady made a great save but it did not make a difference as the whistle blew for full-time moments after the chance was saved.

Kerry FC made it back-to-back-to-back home wins at home building Mounthawk Park into a fortress that no team would like to visit.

There is a week break across the League of Ireland next Friday night and the next action from Kerry FC will be in their historic first-ever final as they take on Waterford FC in the Munster Senior Cup Final in Turners Cross on Monday, June 24th.

Kerry FC Team: 30. Aaron O’Sullivan, 15. Kevin Williams, 6. Ethan Kos, 5. Andy Spain (C), 3. Sean O’Connell, 8. Ronan Teahan, 7. Sean McGrath, 21. Daire McCarthy, 17. Cian Brosnan, 9. Ryan Kelliher (Goal ‘26, ‘83), 13. Nathan Gleeson.

Cllr Finucane To Unveil Plaque At Site Of Prison Camp In Wales

.
Cllr Jim Finucane.

THE outgoing Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Jim Finucane, will unveil a plaque next week at the site of a prison camp in Wales where dozens of Kerry natives were detained following the Easter Rising.

In a joint initiative involving Kerry County Council, the Kerry GAA, and the Provincial Council of the GAA in Britain, the informal ceremony at Frongoch will honour the Kerry men who were held at Frongoch internment camp in 1916 and who played Gaelic football to pass the time.

A total of 37 Kerry prisoners spent several months in the north Wales detention camp following their court martial for involvement in the Easter rebellion, including well-known figures like Tom McEllistrim, Billy Mullins, Dick Fitzgerald, Paddy Cahill, Denis Daly, and Timothy Ring.

Continued below…

.

Many of those who went on to play a leading role in the Irish revolution were also imprisoned at the camp, including Richard Mulcahy, Michael Collins, WT Cosgrave, and Seán T. Ó Ceallaigh.

The field adjacent to the camp became known as ‘Croke Park’ as the prisoners played inter-county football matches regularly. Frongoch also became known as the ‘University of Revolution’ as the Irish Volunteers and the IRB prisoners plotted their next step in the campaign for Irish independence.

“I was invited by the GAA in Britain to unveil a plaque which lists the Kerry men who were detained at Frongoch and which refers to the intercounty match which involved the prisoners from Kerry and Louth on 27 June 1916. It is very important that this historic site bears a reference to the Kerry prisoners who played such a leading role in the Irish revolution,” said Jim Finucane.

The plaque, made of Valentia slate, will be unveiled at the Frongoch museum on Thursday, 20 June at noon and the event will be attended by representatives of the GAA in Kerry and Britain.

Poll-Topper Mikey Sheehy In No Mood To Slow Down

.
Cllr Mikey Sheehy after he was elected on Sunday with his family, wife Suzanne  and children Róisín, Ailbhe and Caragh. Photo By : Domnick Walsh © Eye Focus LTD

THERE was something incongruous about the sight of Mikey Sheehy limping around the election count centre on Sunday, completely at odds with the manner of his vote in the Tralee MD.

The sitting Fianna Fáil councillor was bearing the effects of weeks of continuous canvassing, pounding the roads of the local electoral area, so his slow movements in the John Mitchels GAA Complex belied his performance where he cantered to the top of the poll in the Tralee area.

He nearly doubled his vote from 2019 (with the caveat that Norma Foley was also running back then) and was the only candidate to pass the quota on the first count.

Continued below…

.

Despite the dodgy foot, he was in understandably in good spirits when we spoke to him on Sunday and asked him how he was feeling when he saw the tallies come in the day before.

“I spent the day tallying in Killarney myself with my team,” he said. “The nerves started to kick in before the boxes opened, but once they were, I could see it was positive day for us. Today I can say it’s an emotional day, it’s overwhelming and it didn’t hit me until this morning and Damien Ginty announced the result.”

Cllr Sheehy said the vote he received was five years in the making.

“I’m very proud, I’ve had a huge team out behind me — family, friends, supporters — we’ve worked extremely hard over the last three months, but the work really started five years ago after the last election and we’ve rolled up our sleeves working for the betterment of Tralee and the local area.”

Continued below…

.

The Rockie, who lives among the Naries in Ballyvelly, is positive about the future and what the town already has to offer.

“I think Tralee is an incredible place to live, to work in and to visit as a tourist. I think we have so many things going for us as a town, in terms of tourism infrastructure, community infrastructure, we’ve a great town centre, an incredible Town Park, and we have 13km greenway from Tralee to Fenit.”

But the work goes on and he expressed his desire to work with fellow councillors, Council management and the HSE to bring other projects to fruition.

“We’re looking to deliver further facilities like a stand-alone chemotherapy unit at UHK — something I’m proud to be associated with and will keep on advocating for until it’s delivered — we’re looking for the rollout of further greenways, including one linking Tralee to Listowel, which is incredible exciting and we’re looking at the latest phase of work in the town centre from the Island of Geese to Rock Street which will regenerate that area. This is all about making the town a better place to visit and enjoy.”

“I’m a very proud Tralee man and I’m very proud that I’ll be sitting on the Tralee MD of Kerry County Council representing the people for the next five years,” added Cllr Sheehy.

“We were very pleased to hear about the collaborative work going on in Tralee rewarded at the recent Chambers Ireland Awards ceremony, it’s been a great boost to the town in general.  We really appreciate the voluntary work to improve the town – taking place on a daily basis, from Tralee Chamber Alliance to Tralee Tidy Towns and a special acknowledgement of Team Bramble for the many flower beds they maintain – we see them out in all types of weather here on the Dan Spring Road and it’s just great to see so many people giving their time for the good of the town.”

Philip Lynch, Marketing Officer at Cara Credit Union, said: “We are delighted to co-sponsor and support this Tralee Tidy Towns Awards event which is honouring community volunteer work in Tralee.  It’s very much aligned with the ethos of Cara Credit Union which is about supporting our members and our local area.”

Tralee Tidy Towns Chair, Brendan O’Brien said: “Tralee is looking well and  there’s a lot of work going into the town at the moment but we feel there’s a lot more we can do to get more people involved in the it.  This awards event, which has always been held by Tralee Tidy Towns, is a great way to do that.”

“The recent Tralee Chamber Alliance Chambers Ireland Award means a lot to the town and to us. We’re launching this event this week and  I’m asking the estates, the gardens and the businesses to enter and it might inspire that extra bit of effort or draw more volunteers in to the overall Tidy Towns effort in Tralee. We know this will build community and help Tralee progress in the Tidy Towns competition but ultimately it will help to make Tralee a better place to live in, work in and visit.”
