Fundraising Weekend Of Events Planned To Help Anthony O’Carroll

.
Anthony O’Carroll

A GROUP of motorsport enthusiasts in North Kerry have come together to organise a fundraising event to help the family of motorcycle racer Anthony O’Carroll.

O’Carroll, who is considered a rising star of motorcycle racing, suffered severe injuries while competing in the Southern 100  in the Isle of Man in July.

The Ballyduff man has remained in the intensive care unit of the Walton Centre for Neuroscience in Liverpool since the July 8 accident and his road to recovery is going to be long and arduous.

His parents Neilus and Mary have been by his side since the accident and will continue to provide unwavering support throughout this challenging journey.

To help alleviate the immense financial burden of medical expenses and ongoing care,  members of Kerry Motor Club, Ballyduff Vintage Club, No Hopers Motorcycle Club, and Kerry Motorcycle Racers have come together to organise a fundraising weekend in his home village on September 13-15.

A full programme of events will be announced in due course but plans are in place to have a racing motorcycle exhibition in the community hall, a monster classic car and rally car display, and a weekend of music and entertainment.

A classic car run and a motorcycle ride-out are also planned for the weekend. Barbecues, a five-aside soccer tournament and a 5km walk will also be included in the event’s schedule, opening the fundraiser to those outside the motorsport community.

“Your support is crucial. We are planning a series of events, including Q&A sessions with renowned circuit and road racers, to raise funds and awareness for Anthony’s recovery,” said a statement issued by the organising committee.

Several of Ireland’s top road and circuit racers and rally drivers have been invited to attend the weekend-long event. Their names will be released in due course.

Weekly meetings take place at  8pm each Wednesday night at Yer Man’s Bar in Ballyduff and anyone interested in the event is welcome to attend meetings.

Beginning at Keel GAA grounds at 10am, Damien‘s family, friends and neighbours will walk the Keel Loop Walk to mark what would have been the occasion of his 40th birthday.

Damien attended Castledrum National School and Presentation Secondary School, Milltown, and is fondly remembered by his former school mates as a popular, funny and caring friend.

The walk will begin at 10am sharp, leaving Keel GAA and heading west along the R561 to Whitegate Crossroads, before turning south to Lachtacalla Quay, following the bank of the River Maine to Boolteens, then to the hill via Lassabee and back to Keel GAA via Gortanedin.

Hawley O’Sullivan To Be Remembered At Memorial Truck Run

.
Karen Maher Hayles (centre) who is organising the Hawley O’Sullivan Memorial Truck Run, pictured with Emma Hayles, Michael Maher, Urney Maher (Hawley’s sister) and Ciara Hayles.

A TRALEE man who passed away 25 years ago in a road accident will be fondly remembered at a charity event later this month.

Hawley O’Sullivan, from O’Rahillys Villas, son of the late Tom ‘Lang’ and Kathleen O’Sullivan (nee Cregan), was just 28 when he died on June 15, 1996, just eight days before his son Tony was born.

He made such an impression in his short life that he will never be forgotten by family and friends.

Continued below…

.

His niece, Karen Maher Hayles, is organising a truck run in his memory on Sunday, October 24, from the grounds of Fels Point (adjacent to The Rose Hotel) and truckers are encouraged to come along on the day to honour him and raise funds for the Kerry Hospice Foundation.

Karen was just 14 when her uncle passed away and said she still misses him. “I grew up near my mom’s family home, so I was practically reared in my grandparents house and I idolised Hawley,” she said.

Karen chose the Kerry Hospice Foundation after the amazing care her grandmother Kathleen received from palliative care staff before she passed away in 2004.

Hawley would have been well known in the trucking community having worked for O’Neill’s Transport and later Garyowen Transport, so a big turnout is expected. Karen said Hawley’s son Tony, who lives in Castleisland, will also take part on the day.

Registration takes place from 12noon and the trucks will leave Fels Point at 2pm. They will travel to Castleisland then over the Farranfore, on to Killarney and back to Fels Point.

There will be music from Manus Leen when they return, while a food truck will be there to feed the masses. Members of the public are encouraged to come down to see the trucks and perhaps leave a few euro in the donation buckets.

There’ll also be prizes on the day for Oldest Truck, Best 80s Truck, Best Fleet Turnout, Best Rigid and Best Tractor Unit.

Karen has also set up a donation page where people can contribute to the charity on line just click on the following link… https://www.idonate.ie/fundraiser/11411722_hawley-o-sullivan-memorial-truck-run.html

A KILFENORA man is preparing for a fundraiser to help out a facility which provided great care to his parents during their illnesses before they passed away.

Enda O’Sullivan of The Tankard Bar is in training to join around 50,000 runners for the New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 3.

Enda’s father Jerry passed away in August 2009, while his mother Mary died nine years later in August of 2018. Enda said the amazing kindness and care given by the Kerry Palliative care unit to both his parents during their illnesses inspired him to take on the challenge.

“I’m inspired by the work of Kerry Hospice Foundation Limited and wanted to support them by raising money as part of my participation in New York City Marathon,” said Enda on his Everyday hero fundraising page.

Thank you in advance for your generosity, it means a lot!” You can support Enda, who has already raised nearly €1,000, on the fundraising page by clicking here

Fundraiser To Help Young Girl Battle Rare Form Of Cancer

.
Siobhan Mather.

A FUNDRAISER will take place in Killorglin next month to help a two year old girl battling a rare child cancer.

Siobhan Mather is living in the UK but has strong connections to Kerry through her grandfather Dave Murphy from Portmagee and her grandmother, Teresa Foley from Glencar. Siobhan still has many relations living in Glencar, Glenbeigh and other parts of Kerry.

On July 1 last year, aged just 2, Siobhan became lethargic and was taken to her GP. After being referred to Barnet General Hospital, it was discovered she had a tumour.

She was transferred to Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) where she was diagnosed with Stage 4 Neuroblastoma, a rare child cancer.

Neuroblastoma is a very rare cancer and only 100 children per year are diagnosed in the U.K.  Siobhan has undergone various treatments in the UK and to further her chances of a full recovery she needs a vaccine which is only available in America.

.

High-risk neuroblastoma has a high chance of relapse; and relapsed Neuroblastoma has low survival rates.  Relapsed Neuroblastoma is the most dangerous form of the disease.

There is no standard relapse protocol for relapsed Neuroblastoma, which means clinical trials are often the only hope for many children.

Such clinical trials are rarely available via the NHS, so where families wish to access this treatment, their only option is abroad, in the hope of helping them beat cancer.

In the USA, there have been a number of trials with high success rates.  The cost for the course of treatment, as well as the associated costs of travelling abroad to access it are estimated in the region of £220,000.

To this end a number of fundraisers have been held in the mid-Kerry area over the past few months and the latest is a dance at the Manor Inn, Killorglin, on Saturday, February 17 at 9.30pm. Tickets €5. There is also a justgiving fundraising page which can be accessed by clicking here. Find out more on the Facebook page here

They don’t get Government funding so they have to fundraise for things like their pilates classes. These classes are essential for exercising muscles,” said Eileen, who picks a different charity every time she hold one of these events.

Tim Sullivan and Kacey O’Driscoll who are taking on a cycling challenge in honour of Tim’s father Danny.

A FUNDRAISING cycle in honour of a great Kerryman who is ill in London, has already raised over £20,000 for a hospital there.

Kerry Association London Chairman, Danny Sullivan, who owns a successful construction company, his charitable work and helping out new arrivals from Ireland, suffered a cerebral haemorrhage in June this year.

He is continuing his recovery at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN), London, where he is surrounded by his loving family and a dedicated medical team.

His son Tim has decided to do something to show his appreciation for the care his father has  received by taking on Britain’s world famous long distance cycle challenge – “Lands End to John O’Groats”.

Tim and his partner Kacey will be riding 969 miles from the most South Westerly point of the UK in Cornwall to the most North Easterly tip in Scotland.

From September 9-17, they will ride an average of 108 miles a day and climb approximately 50,000ft in total over the nine days. That is around 13 times up Alpe d’Huez or almost twice the height of Everest.

“Since our dad passed away, we [his children Sean, Eilish, Anne Marie and Micheál] always said we would organise a fundraiser in his memory,” said daughter Eilish Lyons.

“He was a great believer in supporting local organisations. We felt the Hospice would be a very worthy cause and also because all money raised stays in Kerry. As well as raising money and awareness for Kerry Hospice, we would like to use this opportunity to celebrate dad’s life with family, friends and all who knew him,” said Eilish.

There will be a raffle on the night with the first prize of 150 bags of turf, second prize is a 32″ television while third prize is a Christmas tree.
