Anne O’Sullivan: ‘It’s Time To Roll Up My Sleeves And Deliver’

NEVER underestimate the Fianna Fáil vote in Tralee was one of the lessons learnt last weekend, with the party retaining their two seats on the Tralee Municipal District of Kerry County Council.

While Cllr Mikey Sheehy was expected to coast back in, many questioned if first-time candidate Anne O’Sullivan would have the profile to take that the seat vacated by Johnnie Wall.

But, after a dogged battle, she survived a recount requested by Thomas McEllistrim at around 2.30am on Monday morning, which must have led to a sleepless night for Anne…or did it?

Continued below…

.

“I did sleep. It’s like the Leaving Cert — you just have hand it over. The electorate had their day at the ballot box and we just had to wait for the official confirmation today. There was no point in sweating over it. I suppose it was a case of que sera sera,” she told us, after her seat was confirmed on Monday afternoon.

“I’m just delighted to have the support of the electorate and now it’s time to roll up my sleeves, to deliver on the promises I made, to work on the issues and concerns of the people of the Tralee area and to advocate on their behalf to make sure our community is the best for all of us to live and work.”

.

While Anne has been by the side of Minister Norma Foley on her travels around the county in her role as parliamentary assistant, her profile still wasn’t that high coming into the election so did she think this would hamper her chances?

“That was always the challenge. I’m a first-time candidate, not really known in political circles or among the general public, but I had massive support from the people around me and without them I would not be elected.”

Anne is one of three Ballymac natives elected to the Council (“it’s amazing, it just shows the dynamic forces at play in the parish”) and also one of three women now on the Tralee MD council  with Deirdre Ferris and Angie Baily, something she is looking forward to.

“It’s great to have that representation on the Council to advocate for women in our community and we’ll work hard together,” she added.

Mary Lucey: What To Consider When Making Final Decision On CAO Changes

.
Mary Lucey.

Mary Lucey of Career Ahead says students can still avail of the CAO Change of Mind option up until the deadline on July 1 and gives some points to consider when making that decision…

Thousands of leaving cert students (and their parents) are stressing over what final choices should be made prior to the CAO change of mind closing date on 1st July.

Below are some of the main points to consider before submitting final course choices.  This advice is based primarily on feedback from college students who did not complete their first year in college and they points they wished they knew in advance of making CAO decisions.

Continued below…

.

Don’t base decisions on perceived elite courses

Students should not base decisions on a course just because it has high entry points.  It may not equate to it being the right course for them.

Most entry points are based on supply and demand.  For example, a course with very limited places ie Veterinary will have high points, whereas a course that is offered in multiple locations and takes in hundreds of students will have much lower entry points, ie Arts.

I hear the concept of “wasting points” being discussed on many occasions. Students should look at the content of the course and how it suits them rather than focusing entirely on the entry points.

The right course

Students should base choices on what they want they really want to study.   It sounds remarkably simple, but if a student selects a course based on a subject/topic/hobby they love, they find it easier to engage with the course content.

They will be eager to get involved in course related extracurricular activities and networking events, which play an enormous part in progressing to employment/further studies when college is over.

It is all the additional add-on extras a graduate accumulates that will differentiate them after their studies.

Continued below…

.

Base choices on subjects not teachers

Sometimes, in Secondary School, a student is assigned a very engaging teacher for a particular subject.  The teacher ensures classes are interesting, stimulating, and positive.

At times, a student selects a CAO course based on this positive association with the teacher, rather than their genuine interest in the subject area.

They need to consider if they would still have an interest and love for the subject if they did not admire or have a good relationship with the subject teacher.

Look beyond a course title

College course titles can be misleading.  At times, colleges use course titles that attract students, so it is vital to delve into the content of the course to ensure you have a good understanding of what is involved.

When a course is narrowed-down, it is vital to ensure as much information and insight as possible is gathered – both positive and negative facts.

Go through each module for each semester, and each year.  Check out if there is a work placement element. Check out if students can study abroad.  Feel free to contact colleges with queries.

20 CAO choices

There are 10 level 8 CAO choices and 10 Level 6/7 choices – as many as possible should be completed to cover every eventuality.

While a student will have preferred options; nobody can predict the future; so, a plan B, C, D strategy should be incorporated when finalising the CAO application form. No course should be listed that they would not be interested in, and happy and willing to accept, if offered.

Level 6/7 Options

Students often only concentrate on completing the level 8 honours degree course choice options, yet by doing so they are not maximising their options.  It is important to realise a level 7 ordinary degree can lead to a level 8 honours degree, with lower CAO entry points.

Similarly, in the Technological University sector – it may be possible to commence with a Higher Certificate Level 6 course – which may have lower entry points again.  Maximise your CAO course opportunities.

Do not allow others to influence course choices

Friends, family, etc, may have the best of intentions, but the student needs to take responsibility and research and select the course they want to study.  Time and time again, parents and friends over-influence students’ choices.

Select a course that will be rewarding (not just financially!)

Students should not select courses because of anticipated status and/or salary levels. Nothing makes a student more miserable then being on a course they do not like and in a lot of cases, they drop out or when they qualify, they retrain or move into another career they are passionate about.

Students should look at all college options

An honours degree is a level 8 degree, whether obtained from a University, a Technological University, through a tertiary route, or through an apprenticeship.

At times, students base their decisions on the perceived status of a college rather than the suitability of a course. Students should also consider the array of apprenticeships available and are expanding into new areas constantly.

Do not allow location to determine course choice

Some students have a destination in mind, irrespective of the course suitability.  It is better to select related courses across several colleges, rather than various courses in one college, just so you end up in a particular location.

Will the student be employable?

On completion of the course, the student needs to consider whether they will be employable, or will further studies be required? This is highly relevant when budgeting for college courses.

Will four years turn to six years to facilitate the student securing a paid position. Some college courses have a definite career path attached ie primary teaching, nursing, graphic designer etc while others offer a more general qualification, and specialisms may need to be developed through further studies.

What is the budget?

Students need to be realistic when making their choices and tailor their course location to suit their own and their family’s budget.

In addition to college fees, accommodation, travel, food, etc must all be considered. If students are working part-time to support themselves, location of college may be highly relevant to ensure they can continue in their work position.

It is unfair to put enormous pressure and stress on families for the sake of a student wanted to live away from home. The number of children in the family must also be taken into consideration and how they will all be supported from an educational viewpoint.

Include a local college in your choices

No one can predict the future, certain students just cannot settle away from home, and may want to be closer to home.

It may be possible to negotiate a change of course (if a student has sufficient points and there are places available) to a local college, after the first semester or the first year for example, if listed on the CAO form.  Please note, this is completely based on individual college admissions policies and procedures.

Cannot decide on a course?

Students should not feel under pressure to go to college directly after school.   I work with leaving cert students time and time again and the stress they feel under to go to college is enormous.

If a student finds themselves in this situation, they may select an unsuitable course just for the sake of going to college, undoubtedly resulting in dropping out.  The long-term costs and personal implications associated with dropping can be enormous.

They should look all options in FET, apprenticeships, or work for a year until they are in a better position to make decisions. When the student is ready to progress to further studies – they can then do so.

Kerry FC Welcome Longford Town For Thursday Night Football

.

Ivan Hurley previews Kerry FC’s game against Longford Town this Thursday night at Mounthawk Park…

As the league ticks past the 20-match mark, the summer break which will arrive after the full-time whistle tomorrow night is one that will be most welcome by most as a well-earned rest comes in terms of a Friday off next week.

Kerry come into this game off the back of two straight home wins in the league for the first time in the club’s history. Convincing wins over Finn Harps and Treaty United in recent weeks in Mounthawk Park has made the Tralee venue a tough spot to come and play football.

That was also the case when Longford last came to the Kerry capital. Kerry ran out comfortable winners over the Bishopsgate side, scoring 3 goals in the process and Antonio Tuta’s net staying empty for the 90 minutes.

Continued below…

.

That was Kerry’s first-ever home win in the League of Ireland and since then the floodgates have opened.

But an impressive run of home form in recent times hasn’t been backed up on the road for Kerry. 2 defeats in 7 days in both Cobh and UCD have been difficult to swallow for Conor McCarthy’s charges, especially in the narrow manner of those said defeats.

But Thursday night could be seen as a clean slate for the Kerry contingent. Win and the summer break could be a lot more comfortable given the mere 2 points between the basement sides in the league.

Tomorrow’s visitors Longford Town sit on the base of the table and are winless in 5 and are yet to pick up 3 points on the road this season

This is the first time in the club’s history that Kerry FC will play on a Thursday night. Due to the big Euro 2024 kick-off on Friday, all League of Ireland games this week are on Thursday night.

Kerry has previously played a friendly on a Wednesday night, so Tuesday football is the final hurdle to navigate to a Kerry FC game appearing on all 7 days of a week! – Yep, we were that stuck to fill this section!

A couple of injury worries for tomorrow night’s game. Kennedy Amechi who limped off after scoring the first goal against Treaty last time out in Mounthawk Park remains a doubt. Daniel Okwute has picked up 10 yellows so is suspended for this one.

“We are at home, you are expected to win at home and that’s our mindset too,” said James Sugrue. “Our home form has been very good which is a good positive. Longford coming down is obviously tough but we go out to win every game to be honest.”

“We have the break but back-to-back home games now in the league on either side of that and 6 points is the target. I could see the hurt in the boy’s faces after the UCD and I’ve told them to bring that hurt with them on Thursday and show it on the pitch.”

Angie Baily: ‘This Is Monumental, I’m A Nobody Really From Ballymac’

.

FOR Angie Baily, it was long wait until she was officially confirmed as elected as a councillor to the Tralee Municipal District of Kerry County Council.

The teacher, originally from Rathanny in Ballymac, was certain to get the sixth seat even after Thomas McEllistrim requested a recount in the early hours of Monday morning, but she had to wait until just after 4pm later that day to hear the words of confirmation from Deputy Returning Officer Damien Ginty.

She was still reeling from the annoucement when we spoke to her at the count centre on Monday afternoon, where she reflected on the achievement of being elected as a first-time candidate.

Continued below…

.

“It’s almost like being like handed your healthy baby in hospital…the wait is over. This is not just me, I’d be nowhere without the team behind me. For me this is monumental, I’m a nobody really from Ballymac coming into this and to be able to take a seat and represent local people is huge.”

She said she received great support and advice from Fine Gael stalwarts in the party like Deputy Brendan Griffin, Frank Quilter and others.

“My own late father Paddy Joe had a great interest in politics and I would have had his friends to call on including the former councillor Pat McCarthy and even Fianna Fáil Cllr Fionnán Fitzgerald was always there for advice when I needed it.

Speaking of her father, who passed away nearly six years ago,  I suggest he would have been a proud man seeing his daughter elected.

Continued below…

.

“I don’t know if he thought he would ever have seen a day like this, but I’m sure he would be very, very proud. He was a great community man who brought people together and if I can do that then at least I think I will have succeeded.”

With Fianna Fáil’s Anne O’Sullivan also elected for Tralee and Fionnán Fitzgerald elected in the Castleisland Local Electoral Area, there’ll be a trio of Ballymac natives on the Council when it meets for the first time on June 21.

“I think we’ll have to start selling the water from Ballymac because there must be something in it!” said Angie.

“It’s not just three people from Ballymac, but also three teachers and I think there’s something in that. It’s a wonderfully proud moment. Fionnán and I sing together in the local church and Anne is involved in the church down the road, so we know each other locally and we’re all involved in the community. Who would have thought we’d all get in?”

Tralee MD will now have three female representatives on the Council, the most ever, and Angie said she is looking forward to working with Deirdre Ferris and Anne O’Sullivan.

“Let’s see how we can shake things up and bring something new to proceedings, a bit of je ne sais quoi,” she said, laughing.

This ‘nobody’ from Ballymac is aiming to make a name for herself on the political scene over the next five years.

TWO men who held a fundraising climb of Mount Brandon last month presented a cheque to Recovery Haven on Monday for €8,705.

John Paul O’Connor and George Bastible decided to hold the event over the May Bank Holiday Weekend to remember those who lost to cancer, those who are battling cancer at present and to recognise the work done at Recovery Haven to help people and their families going through tough times.

The lads thanked Marisa Reidy and Jacinta Bradley for their help in organising the event, Gallys Tralee who were a main sponsor and all who donated to the charity.

SO it’s all over for another five years.

The John Mitchels GAA Complex hosted the counts for the Tralee, Listowel, Corca Dhuibhne and Castleisland electoral areas, to decide which councillors would take their seats on the Council for the next term and there was no shortage of drama throughout the weekend.

Candidates and their families went through a range of emotions during some tense moments while Council staff meticulously checked the ballots to make the electoral process was as accurate and transparent as possible.

Well known local photographer, Domnick Walsh, was in the count centre on Saturday, Sunday and Monday to capture the atmosphere. Scroll down for photos…

ELECTION 2024: O’Sullivan Takes Last Seat In Tralee After Recount

.

AN exhausting weekend spilled into Monday to decide the outcome of the election of councillors to the Tralee Municipal District of Kerry County Council.

After the 14th count was completed in the early hours of Monday, the gap between Anne O’Sullivan of Fianna Fáil and Independent candidate Thomas McEllistrim was just seven votes (1,252 to 1,245), so McEllistrim, understandably, asked for a recount which began at 11am this morning.

However, when that recount was completed in the John Mitchels GAA Complex by mid-afternoon, there was no change to the standings and Anne O’Sullivan took the final Tralee seat by six votes (there was one additional invalid vote).

Shortly after 4pm, the official announcement of the election of O’Sullivan — and Fine Gael’s Angie Baily, who took the sixth seat — was made by deputy returning officer Damien Ginty of Kerry County Council.

There was a sense of relief and joy among the camps of both candidates as they could celebrate their elections in earnest…before the work on the Council begins!

The following councillors have been elected to the Tralee Municipal District of Kerry County Council

• Baily, Angie (Fine Gael)

• Daly, Paul (Sinn Féin)

• Ferris, Deirdre (Sinn Féin)

• Locke, Sam (Non-Party)

• O’Brien, Terry (Labour)

• O’Sullivan, Anne (Fianna Fáil)

• Sheehy, Mikey (Fianna Fáil)

The Credit Union SFL Div 1 Round 10
Laune Rangers   Ballymacelligott
Venue: JP O’Sullivan Park, Killorglin     Date: 8th June 2024

Round 10 of The County League. Ballymacelligott started without 10 of the starting fifteen in Round 1 of The County League. The ten that stepped up did so with courage, rose to the challenge, and played a mighty second half.

Both teams were level after fourteen minutes of play in Killorglin on Saturday evening. Vinnie Horan scored all three Ballymac points: one from play, a free, and a 45.

Just on the 15-minute mark, Dáire Cleary from Laune Rangers ran through from midfield and hit the back of the net. Vinnie Horan scored a point from a free. Gearóid Hassett added one for Rangers, and Michael Herlihy scored a fine point for Ballymac. Laune Rangers dominated until the final whistle, adding a goal and four points before halftime.

Half Time Score: Laune Rangers 2-08   Ballymacelligott 0-5

Ballymac held Laune Rangers scoreless until the eleventh minute of the second half. In that eleven minute, Ballymac scored 1-03. Micheál Reidy opened the half with grit and determination and scored a point and a goal within three minutes of the throw-in.

Points from Vinnie Horan and Donal Daly had the score after ten minutes Laune Rangers 2-08 Ballymac 1-08. The mid-Kerry side added two points, putting massive pressure on the Ballymac defence.

Two brilliant saves from Christy Leen in goals, within seconds of each other, were pivotal at this stage in the game. Vinnie Horan scored a point from a free. Killorglin replied. Up pops Micheál Reidy for another point, the last score of the night for Ballymac. Killorglin added two more before the final whistle.

The second half was a very positive performance from the Ballymac lads, who outscored Rangers by two points. We saw some great teamwork and some great individual performances from this committed bunch of players.

Full-Time Score:  Laune Rangers 2-15   Ballymacelligott 1-11

Team and Scorers:
Christy Leen, Cathal White, Cian Counihan, Sean Rice, Jonathan Brick, Tadhg Brick, Andy Rogers, Micheál Reidy, Tomás O’Connor, Conor Brick, Vinnie Horan (Capt) Michael Herlihy, James Kenny, Donal Daly, Shane McGillicuddy.

Caoimhe Leen played really well in goals and midfield for us complimented by Aime O’ Rourke and Ruby Sugrue who defended and showed for the ball all night.

U13

Na Fianna 4 13
St Pats 5 08

St Pats U13s made very long journey down to Tuosist for the semi-final of the County League last Monday night.

The 2-and-a-half-hour journey definitely took its toll on our lads and despite their best efforts we were trailing by 9 points at the interval 4 06 to 2 03. Indeed, by 5 mins into the 2nd half, we were 12 down. From to the end of the game, we rallied to nearly pull off the great escape.

Unfortunately, time ran out just as Na Fianna collapsed with us 2 points behind.
Our lads gave over 6 hours on the night, so they deserve individual shout outs!

Daniel Celombijev has been a super new signing for us and is getting everyone very excited as his potential as a goalie.

Bruce McMillian had an absolute stormer of a game, not giving is man an inch. Paddy Flynn continues to grow into an excellent fullback. Darragh Murphy has without doubt improved the most of any player this year.

Cian O Reagan is a superstar in the making, quick, tough and extremely intelligent. Thomas Higgins was and is this team’s firefighter, always in the right place when needed. Darragh Sheehan, playing a grade up, looks like he has been playing football for years and never seems phased by anything.

Rian Flynn covered every inch of the pitch and ran himself into the ground for the team. Another exciting prospect, Jace Flynn is an assured defender, quick, strong and well able to take his score.

Noah Flynn was a dynamo, constantly moving while taking and creating chances. Darragh Flahive had the longest journey of anyone and still covered more distance on the pitch than getting there.

A hugely intelligent and skilful player, one to keep a close eye on. Cillian Enright doesn’t just talk the talk; he walks the walk.

He processes a lethal left foot and an unmatched drive. Oscar Curran is fast becoming a lethal corner forward, ducking and weaving his way behind the defence, causing havoc. Rylan Flynn has all the attributes to be the complete forward.

Jake Connolly continues to improve and made 2 extremely important contributions in the 1st half, setting up scores to keep us in reach.

Dylan Murphy worked himself into the ground giving everything for the team. As it was the long weekend, we had 8 absentees and no doubt they will earn their own shoutout in the near future. Training continues Monday night at 6pm.

Kerins O’Rahillys GAA Club News

Seniors:

Glenflesk, with the aid of the strong breeze, opened the scoring in the 2nd minute when Cian Horan raised a white flag; we responded with two pointed frees from Darragh O’Connor before half back Michael Mullane pointed to level matters in the 7th minute.

Glenflesk were not to score again until the final act of the half and amazingly when Ian Roche pointed from a close in free, they were only one point adrift, 0-04 to 0-03.

That we were not comfortably ahead at this juncture was due to our profligacy in front of goal which allowed Glenflesk stay in the game. Despite dominating proceedings and creating 3 good goal chances we failed to capitalise, and the worry was that these misses could come back to haunt us.

David and Tom controlled proceedings in the middle, Jake marshalled our defence superbly ably assisted by the outstanding Daniel Bowler and an equally impressive Ben Hanafin; our half forward line worked tirelessly with Tomás Kennedy and Shane McElligott hungry for every ball and Barry John was linking play splendidly.

Tommy was winning possession at will and plying his corner men with plenty of opportunities, but it was one of those nights when the ball would not go in the net – even a penalty awarded after Conor Hayes was upended in the square was saved when David’s effort was parried by the keeper Eoin Moynihan, who it must be said, was outstanding in this period.

The result was that we only added another two points to Darragh’s opening brace with Darragh again on target followed by our only score from play from Shane McElligott.

The second half resumed with Donagh Buckley on in place of Sam Pituch and Gearóid Savage replacing Barry John who tweaked a hamstring.

Glenflesk attacked from the throw in and found the net in the first minute when corner forward Tommy Bowler slipped in behind the defence and he gave báideior Rob no chance with a neat finish to the corner.

This setback elicited a quick riposte however with points from Darragh (2), Conor, Ben, and Gazza before Glenflesk struck back to leave just one point between the sides, 0-09 to 1-05 with ten minutes gone.

We continued to take the game to the East Kerry side applying a lot of pressure and Daniel Bowler overlapping on the left struck a sweet left footed effort to restore our two-point advantage again.

Darragh again from a free plus a long-range effort from David had us four to the good but Glenflesk were not going away though, and with Dan O’Brien now playing further up field they came forward at every opportunity – again they raised white flags but we were not to be denied and with time running out we closed out the scoring with lovely efforts from play from Conor and Tommy.

In summary, our lack of clinical finishing made this game closer than it should have been, but we were not discouraged by our missed chances and instead drew on all our reserves of a never say die attitude and a relentless work ethic to achieve a precious two points which will see us into our final game with Ballymac with a fighting chance of avoiding relegation.

Final Score:

KO’R       0-15

Glenflesk 1-09

Team: Rob O’Connor, Darragh McElligott, Ross O’Callaghan, Sam Pituch, Ben Hanafin, Jake Foley, Daniel Bowler, David Moran, Tom Hoare, Tomás Kennedy, BJ Keane, Shane McElligott, Darragh O’Connor, Tommy Walsh, Conor Hayes.

Subs: Donagh Buckley, Gearóid Savage, Ryan Carroll.

Weekend results:

All eyes were on the remaining 3 fixtures in county league division 1 yesterday ( Sunday).

Victories for Legion and Dr Crokes leaves An Ghaeltacht on 5 points with one game left to play ( vs Milltown/Castlemaine), with Milltown remaining on 3 points – they will play An Ghaeltacht and Dingle.

Dingle’s victory in Rathmore lifts them to 5 points with crucial games upcoming vs Milltown/Castlemaine next weekend and their final game vs Spa.

It’s still all to play for and a win against Ballymac in two weeks time is imperative but may not be enough to save our division 1 status should Dingle gain maximum points from their remaining two games.

Div 6A:

Our division 6 team will be in action on Monday night next, 10th June when they take on Milltown/Castlemaine in Strand Road where throw in is @ 7.30 pm

Juvenile Academy:

Ballyrickard was a hive of activity on Sunday morning with great numbers again attending training throughout all age groups and we also welcomed Austin Stacks U8 and U10 girls and their coaches and parents for go games.

Our academy is growing and new members are always welcome to join the club.  It’s great to see so many girls and boys enjoying the sport we all love so much.

Some of our U8 Girls with Coach Kelly Ann

U8 Girls:

Our U8 girls hosted Austin Stacks on  Sunday morning in Healy Park.

We showed great teamwork and scored some fabulous goals and points. All of our girls put their heart and souls into the game. Great support from all our team members and a fine display of our U8 girls skills. Well done to everyone. Thanks to Austin Stacks for coming to us.

U8 Girls with Coach Liam

U9 Boys:

Wednesday evening, our U9 boys hosted Kilcummin in the fifth round of Go-Games. Our lads  played some fantastic football and kicked some impressive scores. Many thanks to Kilcummin for making the trip and we wish them the best for the remainder of the season.

U10 Girls

U10s:

We had a great turn out Sunday morning and were able to field two teams to play against Stacks U10s. Both teams put in great performances and managed to dominate the games. There was some lovely interplay between the girls that ended up in some lovely team scores. The girls have grown in confidence with the ball in hand and were excellent at bursting out of the trouble area into space. It was great to see how they all kept trying. Well done girls. Thanks to Austin Stacks for coming to us.

U13 Boys Divison 3 County league Final

U13 Boys:

U13 Division 3 County League Final result , Kerins O’Rahillys 2-08 John Mitchels 3-08.

The boys in blue came up short Sunday evening  in Austin Stack Park . Our boys gave everything they had in a final worthy of Austin Stack Park.  Our opponents clicked on the day and showed why they have been a top Division side these last few years.  The Journey this KOR U13 team is on is still emerging but what an achievement this has been from Division 9 just 2 years ago to a Division 3 County Final. We are proud of everyone involved in this group and look forward to the next chapter.   Well done boys.

Bucket Collection:

Our Juveniles are holding a bucket collection this Saturday 15th June. We need volunteers from our club to cover time slots. Please contact a member of the committee or send a message through Clubzap, Facebook or Instagram. Please support our club if you’re out and about Saturday.

Do you have unwanted football boots, club jerseys/tops etc?

In a bid to reduce, reuse and recycle we are seeking donations! If you have some usable and clean unwanted gear that no longer fits your child and would like to donate, please bring it to Academy Sunday mornings. We will then have a stall setup over the coming weeks with all items received available to our members for a small donation.

Ladies Notes:

U12 Girls:

The U12s took on Castleisland Desmond’s on Tuesday evening in a closely contested battle. Unfortunately we did not come out on top this time. Even though we were down on numbers, we led for a decent part of the game but we couldn’t find our range in the final quarter. However the girls tried hard and gave it their all. Thanks to Castleisland Desmond’s who made the journey to Healy Park.

U14 Girls:

Our U14 Strand Rd team lost to Laune Rangers in Killorglin on Thursday night in the County League. A very strong home team was well in control by half time, but our girls battled hard in the second half and never gave up.

Our backs in particular worked tirelessly throughout. Stand out players for us on a difficult night, were Lily Hussey, Rachel Ahern, Ruby Foley and Hanna O’Sullivan. The girls will learn from this and move forward.

The girls had a second game on Sunday evening against Churchill away. Again the opposition proved to be the stronger team on the night.

Despite some great scores and chances our girls came up short against a strong Churchill side.  Well done to all the girls who left everything on the pitch and tried their best. Well done to Churchill.

U16 Girls:

With the Junior Certificate in  full flow we trained once this week;  we went for Thursday night but with exams on and a birthday we had very little number so 7 of our girls hit the gym instead of the field a good effort was put in and with  a tug of war at the end for a bit of craic.

Happy Birthday to Greta from the team and management.

Keeping in touch:

If you have something you would like to share with us please contact us on the club phone – 085 2095001 or on Facebook via Messenger.

Senior Men: Yesterday our seniors welcomed Kenmare Shamrocks to Killeen for Round 10 of the Credit Union Co. League and it proved to be a very close contest in weather more akin to October.

Kenmare played with the wind in the first half and were quickly out of the blocks, scoring their first point straight from the throw-in.

Tomás Ó hAiniféin responded for us in the 5th minute but immediately Kenmare replied with their second point. A Jack Sheehan free, the first one of his 3 in the first half, tied the scores after 9 minutes.

Unfortunately for us Kenmare dominated the next 10 minutes, adding 4 points to their tally. Andrew Barry who was prominent throughout the game kicked a fine point but this was cancelled out almost immediately by a Kenmare free.

Two frees from Jack Sheehan in quick succession reduced the margin to 2 points but on the stroke of halftime Kenmare tapped over another free to leave them ahead by 8 points to 5. Early in the second half Jack Doyle found himself up in the forwards and he took his point well. However Kenmare replied with another free to leave 3 points between the teams again.

Midway through the half our lads hit a purple patch and kicked 4 unanswered points, 2 from Mark Lynch (1 free) and 2 from Jack Sheehan, to put us ahead for the first time in the game.

Our lead was short-lived though as Kenmare equalized with 6 minutes remaining. A black card for one of the Kenmare players gave our lads a numerical advantage and Seán Barrett capitalized to put us a point ahead once more in the 30th minute. Unfortunately then disaster struck.

A speculative shot into our square wasn’t dealt with and it fell to one of the Kenmare midfielders who managed to squeeze it into the net.

This was immediately followed by the final whistle. Final score: Na Gaeil 0-11, Kenmare Shamrocks 1-10.

.
lan O’Regan with his mom Brenda O’Regan, dad Alan O’Connor, nan Breda O’Regan teachers Carol O’Donoghue and Triona Daly and Principal Kieran O’Toole.

PUPILS from the first and second classes at Scoil Eoin Balloonagh were called to the School Hall on Monday where the Student Council, Mr. O’Toole and Mrs. O’Donoghue awaited them to announce the ‘School Spirit Award’ winner for 2023/24.

The Scoil Eoin School Spirit Award was devised by the Student Council along with Mr. O’Toole in 2016. This award is not academic award, rather an award in recognition of a pupil who promotes inclusiveness and fairness, is a good role model and displays exemplary behaviour.

Each teacher nominates a pupil from their class. The nominations were read out by Mrs. O’Donoghue to the Student Council members at a meeting, without naming the pupils in the interest of fairness.

.

The Student Council members weren’t aware of the identity of this year’s winner until the announcement this morning.

The winner, chosen by unanimous vote, was Alan O’Regan from Ms. Daly’s 2nd class.  He was nominated because of his enthusiasm and energy.

Alan is known for his great sense of humour and his kindness knows no bounds. Alan got a massive surprise when Mr. O’Toole called out his name and presented him with the trophy. Alan’s mom, dad and nan were hidden away and came into the hall once the announcement was made.

Everyone in Scoil Eoin is in agreement that Alan is a deserving winner. Alan’s name will now join Grace, Luke, Tomás, Leon, Philip, Ella and Rían on the School Spirit Plaque.

FINAL preparations are underway this week to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the opening of Muckross House  to visitors on June 14th 1964.

A special day to mark the occasion is organised by  National Parks & Wildlife Service (NPWS) and the Board of Trustees of Muckross House, Killarney on this Friday, June 14. Staff at NPWS, Muckross House and Trustees will host several exhibitions, walks and guided tours in the vicinity of the house.

There will also be free admission to Muckross House and Muckross Traditional Farms throughout the weekend of June 14-16. Over six decades, thousands of people have collaborated to protect, preserve, and enjoy the special property.

.

The  weekend events feature: guided tours –  history of the house, spinning wheel, bookbinding, pottery, crossroads dancing, nature walks, lakes ecology, Kerry cattle, deer, rhododendron, the white-tailed eagle restoration project and other events from 11am – 4pm.

A free shuttle bus will run from Mission Road to Muckross on Friday 14th from 10am – 4pm. That evening the local drama group Dochas will perform ‘An Evening with Joyce’ in Muckross House.

A programme of events and celebrations will continue throughout the summer months to commemorate one of Killarney’s most iconic locations.

Completed for the landlord Herbert family in 1843, Muckross House acquired new owners at the end of the 19th century being purchased by Lord Ardilaun.

It again changed hands, in 1911, being purchased by a wealthy American, William Bowers Bourn. The house and estate were presented to the Irish nation, in 1932, by the Bowers Bourn and Rose Vincent families. Muckross became Ireland’s first National Park, in 1933.

However, Muckross House remained closed for more than 30 years. Following a campaign by people in Killarney, the Government agreed to the use of the house as a folk museum and it was officially opened as such on June 14, 1964.

Kerry Motor Club’s Winter Rally To Have Headquarters At Rose Hotel

.
The Rose Hotel General Manager Mark Sullivan and Sean Hegarty of Kerry Motor Club agree on terms for the November 3 Kerry Winter Rally

KERRY Motor Club will have a new headquarters for its Kerry Winter Rally for the first time in the event’s 43-year history. The November 3 rally will move to The Rose Hotel in Tralee this year.

The popular end-of-season event has been based at the Banna Beach Resort since its inception in 1981. The link with the Banna Beach Resort was so popular that the rally became affectionately known as the Banna Rally and not by its official Kerry Winter Rally title.

But times change and both the club and the Rose Hotel are delighted to announce a new partnership, adding to an already long-term arrangement with the club’s Circuit of Kerry Rally.
The 2024 event will now be rebranded at The Rose Hotel Kerry Winter Rally.

.

“I want to thank William Murphy and the entire team at Banna. They helped make the event what is today, and Wiliam has been a loyal supporter of Kerry Motor Club for nearly five decades,” said clerk of the course Sean Hegarty.

“I am delighted to announce this new partnership with The Rose Hotel. Rally competitors and fans will be well aware of the welcome they get for the Circuit of Kerry and it is great to now extend that to the Winter Rally as well.”

Mark Sullivan, General Manager at The Rose Hotel, said; “It is a great honour to continue our relationship with Kerry Motor Club. The Rose Hotel Kerry Winter Rally will be a great end-of-season event and we are delighted to be the host hotel for this prestigious rally.”

“We have proudly supported rallying in Kerry for over a decade and look forward to continuing this relationship over the coming years. We look forward to welcoming visitors from all around Ireland and beyond to Tralee town to enjoy top quality hospitality that Kerry’s capital town is renowned for.”

Preparations are well underway for the November 3 event; an initial route survey has been carried out by the organising team and Kerry Motor Club promises some new additional features for the rally that will be announced in due course.

The rally is a counting round of three championships, The Top Part West Coast Rally Championship, the Ace Signs Southern  4 Rally Championship and the Moriarty’s Central Car Sales Kingdom of Kerry Rally Championship so a capacity entry of over 150 cars is guaranteed.

His father Frank bought him the winning ticket. “I’m delighted with the win, it’s great to be able to support the local community,” Alex said.

PHOTOS/REPORT: Kerry And Donegal Share The Points In Ballybofey

Frank Craig reports on Kerry’s game against Donegal yesterday in Ballybofey…

Donegal 1-6

Kerry 0-9

Donegal pegged back Kerry in MacCumhaill Park in Ballybofey as Susanne White held her nerve late on to split the spoils in this TG4 All-Ireland Senior Championship Group 2 opener.

In dreadful conditions, nothing separated the sides at half-time as a Caoimhe Keon goal helped send Donegal in level at 1-3 to 0-6.

Niamh Ní Chonchúir had opened the scoring for the visitors but with Keon rattling the net for Donegal just four minutes in, the hosts stole an early march.  Anna Galvin and Danielle O’Leary then managed to tie matters up for a settled Kerry by the tenth minute.

Continued below…

.

Katie Dowds did hit back for Donegal but three Kingdom points on the bounce from of O’Leary, Lorraine Scanlon and captain Niamh Carmody helped open up a two-point advantage.  White reduced the margin after 18 minutes with a point from a free to make it 0-6 to 1-2.

But with conditions continuing to deteriorate and underfoot now extremely difficult, that was the end of the scoring action right up until the half-time hooter as Aussie Rules star and Donegal captain Niamh McLaughlin squared it.

Kerry jumped two clear once more at the start of the second half as Carmody and Scanlon lobbed over.

Another White free kept Donegal on the visitors’ coattails but a smart Emma Dineen clip, on the three-quarter hour mark doubled Kerry’s upper hand once more.

Nearing the final five minutes, the away side still led 0-9 to 1-4 but a searing Dowds break from the back saw her drive at goal just clear the crossbar. And with White nailing that pressure free at the end, the points were split.
