TWO great rivals met in the Town League Final on Saturday evening in Austin Stack Park and it proved a highly entertaining affair.
Kerins O’Rahillys came out on top over Austin Stacks by a scoreline of 2-15 to 1-14, to stop the Rock side winning four in a row in the competition.
David Moran and Kieran Donaghy were the notable absentees, but inter-county stars Ronan Shanahan, Barry John Keane and Jack Savage all lined out, six days after starring for Kerry in the league final.
Stacks started the better and led 0-4 to 0-2 after 14 minutes, with Shane O’Callaghan proving a handful for the Blues defence.
Barry John Keane and Tommy Walsh had the sides level on 17 minutes, but Greg Horan and Darragh O’Brien restored the two point gap. After a Tommy Walsh score brought it back to one, Stacks kicked on with a well taken goal by Sean Dukes, firing low past Gary Kissane on 23 minutes.
Stacks pulled five clear a minute later through Shane O’Callaghan, but then came the Strand Road fightback.
Barry John Keane palmed the ball to the net after good work from Tommy Walsh and Karl Mullins to leave the the blues 1-7 to 1-6 down at the break.
The scores came quick early in the second half with the sides trading points. Stacks found themselves three ahead (1-11 to 1-8) on 41 minutes, but then came a telling score.
A sweeping move from midfield by Gavin O’Brien saw Barry John Keane set up Tommy Walsh to palm past David Hennessy and level affairs.
Kerins O’Rahillys had the momentum now and kicked on with two points from Barry John Keane and one from Tommy Walsh, putting Strand Road three ahead by the 48th minute, 2-11 to 1-11.
They were able to keep that distance between the sides for the remainder of the match, eventually winning by four to claim the title. Scroll down for action images from the game…
