PUPILS at O’Brennan National School in Kielduff got a helping hand from a Kerry multiple All-Ireland winner to launch a book written by the children.
The 260 page book entitled ‘O’Brennan NS – We Are Writers’ features stories produced by the schoolchildren from all classes, around the theme of Christmas.
There was great excitement in the school when Kerry footballer, Aidan O’Mahony, came to launch the book last week.

The five-time All-Ireland winning Garda, based in Tralee, commended the children for their efforts and was very impressed with the quality of stories written.
“The book has over 260 pages and centres on the topic “Christmas”,” said teacher and event co-ordinator Michelle O’Brien.
“All classes were involved; the kids submitted fictional stories, poems as well as the Junior/Senior Infants regaling us of their favourite thing about Christmas. Our aim is to increase interest in writing and reading and this event has definitely done this, so all teachers are delighted with the end product. Aidan reminisced on his own school days and the excitement with the build up to Christmas and writing his own Christmas stories,” said Michelle.
A focus on an increased interest in writing and reading was the objective of the book. Teachers were left delighted as they feel the children achieved that goal.
“The entire school community was very proud of the final result, and saw it as a tremendous achievement for all involved,” said Deputy Principal, Mary Slattery.
Proceeds from the book and a recent book fair in the school totalled over €2,500. The school will receive commission from the publishers, Scholastic, which will be used to update their school and classroom libraries.
