HAPPINESS, nervousness, and for some, a little disappointment were among the emotions evident at schools around the country this morning as thousands of students collected their Leaving Cert results.

There were 1,727 Kerry students among them and hundreds were from Tralee schools, so we called around this morning to see what the reaction was like.

Over in Gaelcholáiste Chiarraí they had some very high-achievers as Principal Ruairí Ó Cinnéide explained.

“We, in Gaelcholáiste Chiarraí, are immensely proud of the achievements of all our students who received their Leaving Certificate results today. Congratulations to the students, parents and teachers in working together to achieve these exceptional results.

75% of Gaelcholáiste Chiarraí students achieved over 400 points while 30% of students achieved over 500 points. Two students achieved top marks of 625 points. Róisín Ní Churraí from Camp, a past pupil of Aghacasla NS and Brian Mac Amhlaoibh from Lixnaw, a past pupil of SN Mhuire de Lourdes,” he said.

Acting Deputy Principal, Sandra Moore was handing out the results when we arrived at Presentation Secondary.

“Overall they went very well and we’re delighted with the girls. Their commitment over the last two years has certainly paid off with some great results,” she said.

There were just eight students receiving the results in Coláiste Gleann Lí and Principal Richard Lawlor was there to greet them.

“They were very happy and we sat down with them and went through their options. When you see the smiles on their faces after they opened the envelopes that makes it all worthwhile. They received great support from the staff all year,” he said.

Principal of CBS The Green, Anne O’Callaghan, was also delighted with the results of their students.

“We’re very happy for the boys, one of them received over 600 points but many received over 500 points and most I’ve spoken to think they got the courses they wanted. There were 76 sitting the exams and they were a close-knit group. The marks in higher level Maths were very good also,” said the Principal.

Mercy Mounthawk saw 180 students sit the exams in June so the school was a hive of activity on Wedesday morning. Principal John O’Roarke had many envelopes to hand out and was upbeat about how the students got on.

“We’re very pleased, we had a great group of students and they did themselves proud. We had about 20% achieving over 500 points which is a tremendous achievement. When you see them putting the work in and get the reward that’s what matters. We hope they get the courses they want when the offers come out on Monday,” he said.

Meanwhile, Brookfield College had 75 sitting the Leaving Cert and there were two student who received 625 points, Lauren Kelly and Sean O’Hara.

“We had 25% of students receiving over 500 points. They’re delighted with the results and they can now see the benefit of putting in the hard work over the past two years. They’re ready for the next phase now,” said Elisha Dowling of Brookfield College.

So the results are in and now the wait goes on for many until the CAO offers on Monday. In the meantime they can celebrate. Scroll down for photos…
