A SUNNY Friday morning provided perfect conditions for a novel, energetic fundraiser at Scoil Nuachabháil.
Every pupil in the school took part in a Marathon Relay event which saw them take a baton and sprint laps of the playground in a relay to make up the 26.2 miles.
“We contacted Ciaran Slane of Fitter Younger who is down here to oversee the event,” said Principal Mick Bolger.
“We’re trying to raise funds for four gardens — a sensory garden, a vegetable garden, a biodiversity garden and a glasshouse/polytunnel-type garden,” he said.

“Pupils were given sponsorship cards and we’re hoping to raise between €4,000 and €5,000 from the event which will do a lot of good for the school,” said the Principal.
There was a fantastic atmosphere too and the pupils were really going at it to get the best time they could.

“We’ve been doing 15 minutes a day running since the start of the year to improve their skills and it’s really showing as they’re flying around the yard,” he said.
Parents also showed up to cheer on the pupils and help with refreshments, while an ice-cream van was also on hand as a reward for the children’s (and the teachers’) efforts.
It was wonderful morning for the community and the marathon was completed in a very respectable two hours and 26 minutes. Scroll down for photos…
