O’Brennan NS in Ballymac was a hive of activity last week for their annual Active Schools Week and a few familiar faces dropped in to give them encouragement.

Despite the unpleasant weather conditions, Monday saw the whole school embark on their Slí na Sláinte challenge which was to complete 10km by the end of the week.

An obstacle course provided lots of fun and laughter on Tuesday, while on Wednesday the school welcomed Mary O’Connor from An Riocht in Castleisland who ran an athletics workshop.

The highlight of the week was on Wednesday afternoon when the students took on teams of parents for exciting and competitive games of basketball and soccer.

On Thursday Joe O’Connor from Nisus Fitness Training Club in Tralee gave an interesting and informative nutritional talk followed by some mobility and flexibility tasks.

He encouraged communication, co-operation and teamwork among the students. There are plenty of new healthy eating habits starting in school thanks to Joe’s words.

The week culminated in a visit from two sports celebrities – All-Ireland medal holder/ Dancing with the Stars Champion Aidan O’Mahony and Irish International rugby player Ciara Griffin.

Aidan was impressed by the dancing skills on show from Junior Infants right up to Sixth Class and encouraged the students to always try their best and push themselves outside of their comfort zone – just like he did on Dancing with the Stars.

Ciara Griffin coached a rugby skills workshop which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. All who participated were in awe of Ciara’s talent and skill. She left the children with some homework – to say three encouraging or positive thoughts to fellow sports players over the weekend.

There was great fun and laughter on Friday evening as a Tug of War finished the week off. Scroll down for photos and a video of the junior infants performing ‘The Birdie Song’…
