MINISTER for Education Norma Foley, TD, has paid tribute to more than 350 young people from five schools across Kerry and Limerick for undertaking projects to bring about positive change in their communities.
The Minister was speaking at an event hosted by Young Social Innovators (YSI) with support from NEWKD (North East West Kerry Development) in Castleisland, on Thursday. The YSI Kerry and Limerick Community Showcase Event honoured Junior Cycle students, who are participating in YSI’s Action Programme, from the following schools:
Presentation Secondary School, Tralee; Causeway Comprehensive School, Causeway; Coláiste na Trocáire, Rathkeale; Castleisland Community College, Castleisland and Coláiste Gleann Lí, Tralee.

The event saw the young people present social innovation projects that they are engaged in as part of the YSI’s Action Programme in front of a guest panel of representatives from regional educational and community development organisations.
The project topics included kindness, the housing crisis, homelessness, mental health and Covid-19, wellness, healthy eating, biodiversity and road safety, among others.
Speaking at the event, Minister for Education, Norma Foley, TD, said; “I visit schools the length and breadth of the country, and I am continuously impressed by the imagination, creativity and entrepreneurial spirit that exists in our classrooms. Today, we see the practical results in projects that aim to tackle important social issues such as biodiversity, road safety, healthy eating, homelessness, fast fashion and mental health, to name but a few.
The guest panel at the event comprised members of Kerry Education and Training Board; Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board, NEWKD (North East West Kerry Development); Technological University of the Shannon; Kerry Children and Young People’s Services Committee; and Munster Technological University, Tralee.
