YOU wouldn’t want to get sick last night, because it seemed like the entire medical community from University Hospital Kerry was in Ballygarry House Hotel!
The occasion was the ‘Sickly Come Dancing’ Contest, organised by the hospital’s social club, where 12 couples took to the floor to raise funds for the Chemotherapy Day Unit.
They were watched by around 700 of their colleagues and family members as tickets were sold in-house at the hospital for the stylish affair which raised an incredible €50,000.

The couples, representing various departments all over the hospital, rehearsed diligently under Honor Hurley over the past couple of months and it certainly showed on the night as they lit up the dance floor, delighting the crowd.
The dancers taking part were Chris Carmody and Joe Diggins; Margaret Jones and Sibu HLongwane; Catriona Kennedy and Patrick White; Mary Fitzgerald and Padraig McCrohan; Ellen Cox and Paul McCarthy; Regina Galvin and Mike O’Halloran; Noelette O’Sullivan and Martin O’Sullivan; Deborah Meehan and Gavin Breen; Aisling Sheehy and Nealie Warren; Hazel Reid and Allan Morales; Kay Karim and Martin Boyd and Ciara Prendiville and Mustafa.
Tim Moynihan proved a very able MC for evening, while the judges at the event Aidan O’Mahony, Elma Walsh, Cassie Leen and Dr Tom McCormack certainly had their work cut out for them.
After deliberating, they went for Allan Morales and Hazel Reid as the winners. There was also ‘public vote’ and an ‘audience vote’ and these went to Chris Carmody/Joe Diggins and Mary Fitzgerald and Padraig McCrohan.
Of course all the fun was for a serious cause. Due to an increasing demand for cancer services at the hospital, they are in the process of extending the Chemotherapy unit in order to provide a purpose-built facility where patients can be treated with compassion, respect and dignity at all stage of the treatment process.
Members of the public can still help the unit by donating to a special gofundme page you can access by clicking here Scroll down for a video of the opening dance and loads of photos of the fun on the night (we’ll have many more photos of the style at the event tomorrow)…
