Barrett Cup Final:

St Pats 2-8

Beaufort 2-6

Pride of the parish this week goes to our Junior team who completed a league and championship double when they defeated Beaufort in the Barrett Cup final last Saturday.

Played in a very sporting manner in great underfoot conditions in Farranfore, St Pats played into a stiff breeze in the opening half. Beaufort registered two quick early points from frees before St Pats replied with points by Anton O’Callaghan and David Kerins.

Lady luck played her part in the first goal of the game which fell in favour of St Pats. Adrian Greaney played a speculative ball high into the square to full forward Thomas “Massi” O’Sullivan.

Massi failed to connect but the on-rushing Beaufort goalie misjudged the flight of the ball and it bounced over his head and into the net to give St Pats a three point lead.

However, Beaufort’s reply was immediate. Their corner forward cut in straight through on goal and after a great save by John “Fizzy” Fitzgerald, the rebound fell into the hands of full forward Kevin O’Brien and he duly dispatched to the net to tie the game.

Jeffrey Foley added a point in the 20th minute to steady the ship for St Pats and from the re-start St Pats struck for their second goal. Greaney got possession around the middle of the field and played a cross-field ball to Brandon Boyle.

With his blinding pace, Brandon rounded his man, ran toward goal and finished neatly to the net to put St Pats in a commanding position approaching half time.

However, Beaufort tapped over two frees just before the short whistle to narrow the gap to two points at the break.

HT Score St Pats 2-3 Beaufort 1-4. St Pats would have been happy with this score-line given the strength of the wind that they played into.

They used the ball wisely with James Costello, Anton O’Callaghan and Jeffrey Foley conducting proceedings. The second half yet again saw St Pats dominate possession but they were extremely wasteful with their kicking notching up a total of 14 wides in the second half.

They never really pulled away from Beaufort who never gave up fighting. Greaney kicked the first point of the second half which Beaufort quickly cancelled out through a free from O’Brien.

Pats dominated the next 10 minutes but their wide tally was mounting up and this gave heart to Beaufort who raided attacks on the St Pats rearguard. One such attack lead to their second goal with some good interplay between the half forwards creating an overlap.

The ball was fed to Dan Doonan, now playing at the edge of the square and he slotted past Fizzy to tie the game. The next 10 minutes were a nervy affair with both teams swapping points, St Pats scores coming from Brendain Savage and Massi.

Going into the last five minutes, play had to be halted after a cow ran on to the pitch to big roars of laughter from supporters and players alike!

The CCC are currently studying video footage provided by Luke “Chesty” Mulligan of the encroachment and she faces a long ban from all GAA activities!

When the game was re-started, it was the Pats that gained the upper hand after a monster point from Brendan Savage was quickly followed by another from David Kerins.

However, as everyone knows, a 2 point lead is a dangerous lead going into the final stages of a game.

Beaufort launched one last attack on the St Pats goal. After a goal mouth scramble, the ball broke loose and a goal bound shot was miraculously cleared off the St Pats line by Joe Costello.

Jordan Conway kicked the ball out over the sideline and the referee blew the final whistle which sparked huge celebrations amongst the St Pats players, mentors and supporters.

It was the first championship title for the club in 20 years so it was well overdue. Huge credit goes to the management team of Pat Foley, Kevin Quirke & Pat Stack who built a great team with mixture of youth and experience.

Captain Anton O’Callaghan lifted the cup and gave a fantastic speech as gaeilge. Huge credit must go to Beaufort who were missing players from their semi final win but they never gave up and fought right to the end.

Well done also to Firies GAA Club for having the pitch in perfect condition for the game and the referee did an excellent job officiating the game, which was played in a very sporting manner.
