Girls And Ladies Urged To ‘Give It A Go’ This Sunday At St Pat’s

.

THE benefits of being part of team sports will be promoted at a special recruitment day for girls and ladies at St Pats GAA Club this Sunday.

The ‘Give It A Go’ morning from 10.30am at the club grounds in Blennerville is open to all girls and ladies in the area and beyond, to come along to explore the health and social benefits of playing in a GAA team.

Health and Wellbeing Officer at St Pat’s GAA Club, Fiona Costello, explained the idea behind the event.

Continued below…

.

“It was inspired by a project from Cuala GAA teenager with the club, Aisling Nig Ruairc, who wanted to tackle the high dropout numbers in the sport,” said Fiona.

The Dublin teenager started the ‘Keeping Girls Playing Project’ and discovered one of two girls will drop out of team sport by the age of 13 and are three times more likely to give it up than boys are.

“We’re trying to change that statistic and to keep girls in the sport. Coupled with the enthusiasm of St Pats coach Norma Flynn, last year we restarted girls football in St Pats for Under 8 to Under 12s,” continued Fiona.

“Niamh Daly and Martina Dairo have done great work in keeping the minors and junior ladies teams going, but it was fantastic for us last year to see girls who restarted football or joined as newcomers, to enjoy all the benefits of team sport and all it has to offer, both physically and socially for mental health and for physical fitness and skills,” she said.

Continued below…

.

Young player Kayla O’Connor has been playing since she was five and now plays with the minor team and really enjoys it. She mentored the Under 10s last year and Fiona said she had a big impact on the younger players.

Eve O’Sullivan and Katelyn Laide started with the Under 12s and quickly developed skills to play in the county league while Sarah Greaney had played with the junior academy when she was younger but joined the Under 12s last year.

“I didn’t really like it when I was younger, but when I could play with all the girls last year I really enjoyed it. I learned a lot of skills and it’s good for keeping fit,” said Sarah.

“If you can keep up a team sport into secondary school you’ve got fitness, you have friendships, responsibilities, a structure, you’re all working towards the same goal,” said Fiona. “Being involved in team sports has so many benefits.”

Norma Flynn began coaching the Under 5s about four years ago and took over the new underage teams with Fiona last year.

“It was a great success last year and they did really well,” said Norma. “We have a lovely community here and we just want to try bring more girls into the club this year. It’s great for their confidence. Some of them were really quiet at the beginning but you could see the confidence growing as the year went on,” she added.

Girls born in 2013, right all the way up to ladies, regardless of their experience, are invited to St Pats on Sunday morning at 10.30am to find out more. For more check out their Facebook page.

Juvenile Academy

U5’s: The wonderful sunshine brought our biggest turnout so far this year. Everyone made the most of it, putting in great effort and really working hard. Clearly all the girls and boys have been practicing at home as their kicking has improved and great skills were shown with handpassing too. Oisin Bourke is one of our most senior U5s and he showed a great example to other players with his listening and participation and the player of the week trophy went home with him.

U7’s: An excellent session was had this morning in great conditions.
Numbers are growing every week. Huge thanks to all who helped out.

U9’s: Well done to all the boys who attended this week. Skill levels were very high and the lads are improving every week.

Well done to Fionn Sharp who was outstanding in the soloing drills and has been practicing at home. Looking forward to next Sunday at 10:30

U11’s: We had perfect weather for our u11’s training sessions on Friday evening and Sunday morning this week, with a big turnout on both days. Our approach is to combine fun games along with skills development. This week the emphasis was on improving skills of high fielding, hook kicks and close-tackling. In the second half of the session, we played mini games of hand passing and kick passing. All the players demonstrated the great progress they are making in their football skills. We saw excellent displays this week from Isaac Price, Charlie Sharp and Hugh Costello.

Training continues next Friday 4th June at 6p.m. and the following Sunday at 12 noon at St Pat’s club grounds in Blennerville V92 RH98. A reminder to parents that all players are to have a gum shield and to wear it at training and to register on www.foireann.ie

U9-12 Girls: What a great session with 30 enthusiastic girls in 3 pods. The coaches are very impressed by your improving skills week on week. The older girls are all very keen to start competitive match play with this surge in confidence!
Norma & Fiona will coordinate some friendly matches with girls from other clubs in the coming weeks. Updates to follow in this regard.
Coach Nigel joined Norma in pod 1 & was mighty impressed with the girls skills & confidence since week 1, all players stood out & impressed.
Pod 3 had great fun under Labhraidh & Kieran & welcomed Eve O’Sullivan who showed great kicking skills for her first session. Mary-Kate & Rosa showed great enthusiasm.
Pod 2 had the turn of the trophy.. a very hard pick with such upbeat girls so keen to listen & learn! It could have been anyone of our 9 girls but Grace Costello earned the trophy for showing great determination & motivation during the session despite a wounded knee!
Finally as a physiotherapist I find it so rewarding to see such great attendance & enthusiasm with most of our girls turning up at every training session. We’re getting fitted, stronger, more skilful & developing a love for movement & team sport.
Parents keep up the encouragement of the girls & beat the statistic of 50% drop out of sports by 13 years old!

U13’s: U 13s are training very well. Skill levels are high and the application in training is superb.

U15’s: Our boys trained last week at the usual times in preparation for the U15 County League. Best of luck to Joe Costello, Brendan Poff, John Bowler, Dipo Dairo and the players. Fixtures for Div 7A are:

Rd 1, Wednesday June 9 @ 7pm: Knock/Brosna V St Pats (venue to be determined)

Rd 2, Bye

WELL ‘Operation Transformation may be returning tonight on RTE ONE, but a local GAA group got a head start on them last night with their own initiative.

St Pat’s in Blennerville, in conjunction with Operation Transformation & Get Ireland Walking, are hosting a series of community walks under lights over the next eight Tuesday evenings, starting from yesterday when a good number of people showed up for the inaugural walk.

Chairman of St Pats GAA Club, Jimmy Mulligan, said it’s a great way of getting people together socially for some exercise.

“We realise that the club is more than just about football and it’s about the community and this is a great way of getting people out in January, to get active and have a bit of fun.  They can also see the facilities we have in the club, the astroturf pitch and more,” said Jimmy.

Taking place at 6.30pm from the club grounds, it is a free event and is open to everyone in the wider community of all abilities and ages. It doesn’t matter if you missed the first one, you can attend the walks at any stage over the course of the eight week programme.

IT was a blustery and showery afternoon west of the bridge on Sunday, but a group of around 40 people still turned up for St Pat’s GAA Club annual fundraising walk.

Held in aid of Palliative Care Unit and in memory of the late Tony O’Donoghue, a great stalwart of the club, the walkers/runners set off on the 5k route and stayed out of the rain for the most part.

They returned to tea/coffee, cakes and baked goodies back in the clubhouse. Tony’s daughter Andrea thanked everyone for keeping the tradition of the walk alive.

Unfortunately, the planned family fun day had to be called off due to the poor weather forecast. Scroll down for photos…

THE weather may not have been kind at times during the week, but it didn’t matter for football-mad youngsters in Blennerville.

St Pat’s GAA Club held its annual Cúl Camp and there was a good turnout during the week.

“We had rain on Tuesday and Wednesday, but yesterday was fine and so was today,” explained head coach, Thomas Ladden on Friday, who also said the kids had a great time all week. Scroll down for photos…

A LOCAL GAA club is appealing for members of the public to help gardaí with their investigation into an act of vandalism at the weekend.

The club said a number of panes of glass were damaged resulting in €385 worth of damage. It’s not the first time this has happened at the premises with vandals striking a number of times over the years.

“The person who carried out this cowardly act will have had a lot of glass on their clothing and may have suffered cuts to their hands and face. We appeal to anyone who may have information on this cowardly act to contact Tralee Garda Station on 0667102300 who are investigating the matter,” read the post.

THERE were vampires, witches and ghouls aplenty in Blennerville on Sunday afternoon as youngsters enjoyed a party at the local GAA club.

The people at St Pats GAA Club decided to get a headstart on the Halloween fun by hosting a fancy dress party for the younger members.

There was a disco and refreshments and the adults got in on the act too, dressing up in the spirit of the occasion. The next week will see many more parties like this for young and old repeated around town. Scroll down for photos supplied by the club. Is your club or school having a Halloween party this week? A LOHERCANNON man enjoyed a nice windfall recently when he won the St Pats GAA Club Lotto draw.

James O’Connor collected his cheque for €7,300 at the club on Tuesday evening, but it’s not the first time this has happened to the O’Connor family.

His daughters Paula and Martina have already won the club lotto in the past, so supporting the club has really paid off for them.

James was in Keane’s Bar in Curraheen last Sunday with his wife, Bridie, for a drink and they were having a chat with friends.

“The draw took place and we paid no notice to it. Then Christy [Murphy, Club President] said, ‘the lotto has been won tonight and the man who won it is at the bar’. He come over then and put his hand on my shoulder. I thought they were having me on,” said James.

They weren’t and James can now enjoy the cash. I’d say his wife Bridie will have to play the lotto now, with the luck of the O’Connors.

THE people at St Pat’s GAA Club weren’t idle this weekend.

First up was the ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ show in the Ballyroe Heights Hotel on Friday which was packed out for a great night’s entertainment.

Their senior team was in action in the last county league game of the season on Sunday (they lost to Beale) and to finish off the weekend, the younger members of the club had great fun at the annual Christmas party that afternoon.

This year it was held in Benners Hotel where kids enjoyed a disco, games and lots of food and drinks, while parents watched.

IT was another special day for St Pat’s GAA Club on Sunday as their family fun day was well supported.

The day started with the second Tony O’Donoghue memorial walk at 12 noon followed by great fun and games at the GAA grounds.

“It’s an annual event now,” said Andrea O’Donoghue, daughter of the late Tony. “His anniversary was yesterday and it’s still a bit raw, but it’s for palliative care and it’s a great cause. We’ve a big crowd here which is fantastic,” said Andrea.

Volunteers provided refreshments on a day which showed the strength of the club and community.

IF you still don’t have plans for the weekend and you’re feeling energetic, then you still have time to sign up for the Dingle Way Challenge this Sunday.

Registration closes at 9pm on Friday so click here to sign up for this amazing event.

A fundraiser for St Pat’s GAA club, the event will see people enjoy the beauty of the west Kerry peninsula all in one day.

Organisers say Sunday is supposed to be the best day of the weekend weatherwise, so conditions should be good enough to enjoy the mountains, beaches and paths of West Kerry.

The Challenge is a 40km walk taking participants from the foothills of Mt Brandon around through Ballydavid, Wine Strand, Clogher Strand, Dunquin, Slea Head and finishing in the famous Paidi O’Se’s bar where there will be a free barbecue with the meat sponsored by Seamus O’Sullivan Butchers.

Participants will then be bussed back to the main sponsors, Benners Hotel in Tralee, for a social evening for all participants on completion of the challenge.

The route takes in some of the most incredible scenery our country has to offer with views over the Blasket Islands, the historical village of Dunquin, Slea Head drive and many of the places made famous by the film Ryan’s Daughter.

The Challenge is achievable for most people with a reasonable fitness level and the club has  included an extra Ultra section which begins earlier in the morning for those who wish to test themselves further.

This Challenge gives locals and tourists alike a real opportunity to explore the Dingle Peninsula in a fun, safe and challenging environment.

All funds raised will be used for the development projects the club is undertaking to enhance facilities for players, members and the greater community.

Buses leave St Pat’s GAA Club at 4am sharp for the Ultra and at 6am for the regular route. See the event’s Facebook page here for more

The St Pats GAA Club 2015 Dingle Way Challenge will take place on Sunday, May 31 and promises to be an exceptional day on the mountains, beaches and paths of West Kerry.

This year’s event is sponsored by Benner’s Hotel Tralee – which is offering great overnight packages for out of town visitors – and will host the club’s social evening for all participants on completion of the challenge.

“We’re delighted to be associated with an event of such an active nature, which will showcase our peninsula to participants. Hopefully we’ll get good weather and with the way it’s been run over the past few years it’s bound to be a success,” said Alan O’Sullivan of Benners Hotel.

U-16’s:

St Pats 5 09

John Mitchels 7 11

St Pats U16s produced a stunning fightback in the second half against John Mitchels. However,on this occasion, a strong Mitchels team held on for victory. This was our final central league fixture and was played on a glorious evening for football in Ballyseedy.

John Mitchels started brightly before St Pats, led by the excellent Joe Quilter, won a penalty which was coolly converted by Eoin Greaney. This was followed by scores from Joe and another pointed free from Eoin. Mitchels finished the first half strong, racking up three goals.goals. Mitchels could have scored more but were thwarted on numerous ocasions by the excellent Sean Hogan in goals and some diligent defending from Joe O’ Connor and Mikey Cahill.

The second comeback was led by Shane Jordan and Patrick Dowling, who both won a lot of ball around the middle, setting up Eoin Greaney, James Friel and the unstoppable Joe Quilter, who bagged a second half hat-trick. Unfortunately, the comeback came too late and Mitchels proved deserving winners in the end.

We now have two months to prepare for the county league which will commence after the exams in June. The central league has pitted us against some strong outfits and it will prove to be great preparation for our future challenges.

U-12’s:

U12 Challenge Match: St Pat’s, 3-8;  Kerins O’Rahillys, 3-11

This was our first match of the season and it showed in how slow we were to knit together as a team in the first half.  Strand Road had a deserved lead of 2-9 to 1-1 at half-time, having played with the breeze and a lot of composure and teamwork.

Things would have been a great deal worse were it not for some heroic defence, particularly by Michael Doody and Molly O’Neill, supported by Danny Greaney, Aaron Murphy and Cillian Lynch.  Tomás O’Sullivan (goal) and Danny (point) were our first half scorers.

A couple of changes to the formation at half-time paid instant dividends as our centre three of Tomás, Danny and Daniel Moriarty started to dominate possession.  While Strand Road were limited to just 2 points for much of the half, we had scores from Tomás (1-3), Danny (1-2), Jade Harkin and Cillian (a point each), bringing our total to 3-8.

Strand Road were finding it difficult to clear their lines under strong pressure from Jade, and Colin Doody.  However, they found a little more and despite great defensive work by Michael Doody and Liam O’Sullivan, they got the break they needed and fired home a last minute goal to win by three points. For a first game out, this was a great performance full of promise for a good season ahead.  That the players stuck at it and never lost belief in their ability to take the game was a credit to them all.  Roll on the County League.

Man of the match for his great defensive work was Michael Doody.

U-14’s:

County League Round 1:

Cordal/Scartaglin 1-7 St Pats 4-15

Our Under 14’s travelled out to Cordal last Wednesday evening to take on Cordal/Scartaglin in the first round of the CountyLeague.

The team welcomed back Ali Gardezi and Martin Savage after their school tour and they came away with a comprehensive victory. Captain Fergal O’Brien won the toss and chose to play with a strong breeze.

The opening exchanges were dominated by Cordal/Scartaglin who had the majority of possession but the strong breeze coupled with some wayward kicks kept them scoreless. Patrick Dowling, who had a fantastic game on the “40”, opened St Pats account in the 4th minute with a point from out far.

Cordal/Scartaglin struggled to deal with the mobility of the St Pats midfield of Ali Gardezi and Fergal O’Brien who in turn fed Dowling and he punished the home side every time. Patrick added a further 7 points (6 from play) before the short whistle along with 4 from Fergal and one from a very acute angle by the ever industrious Cormac Lynch.

Cordal/Scart never gave up into the strong breeze and they were rewarded themselves with 3 points in the first half.

However, 3 minutes before the interval, St Pats struck the net which put some serious daylight between the teams. Cathal Fitzgibbon, who was outstanding in the half back line along with Brian Teahan, dispossessed his man and played a good ball up the right wing to O’Brien.

Fergal made an incisive run through the opposition rearguard, drew the cover and fed it superbly to Dowling who finished to the net.

It was a long way back for the home side after this goal but with the winds are their back, the game was certainly not over as a contest. HT Score St Pat 1-13 Cordal/Scart 0-3. The home side needed a quick goal and some fortune at the start of the second half to get back into the game.

But Fortune favours the brave and this was epitomised by James O’Sullivan who fought hard to win back a ball for St Pat. He fed it superbly into his younger brother Tomas and he drilled it past the keeper.

It left an insurmountable task for the home side and further goals from Tomas (after good work from Niall McCarthy) and Fergal O’Brien in the 39th and 42nd minute killed the game as a contest.

Ali Gardezi scored a lovely point from out far into the breeze and Tomas added a further point in the 45th minute to finish St Pats scoring. Cordal/Scart kept plugging away and kicked 4 further points in the second half.

They had some goal chances in that second half but were held out by some resolute defending by the full backs Damien Quirke and Ciaran O’Donoghue in particular and also some great saves by Gavin Doody in goals.

They eventually rattled the St Pats net with 3 minutes to go after an overlap from out the field. Final Score: Cordal/Scart 1-7 St Pats 4-15.

Credit goes to everyone in the team for playing their part in a comprehensive victory away from home. The team is developing nicely and is improving game by game. However, stiffer challenges lay ahead and the team must continue to improve to meet them head on.

Team: G Doody, C O’Donoghue, D Quirke, I McCarthy, B Teahan, C Fitzgibbon, F O’Brien (1-4), A Gardezi (0-1), C Lynch (0-1), P Dowling (1-8), M Savage, N McCarthy, J O’Sullivan, T O’Sullivan (2-1), M Everett, P Murphy, A O’Brien. Next Game in the County League is at home to Ballyheigue this Wednesday evening at 7pm. The team is also entering the Feile competition which will be held over Saturday April 11th and 18th. The Feile this year will be held in Wexford. Fixtures to be published later next week.

U-16’s:

Austin Stacks 3-03, St Pats 1-03

Our under 16s played a strong Austin Stacks team on Monday last in difficult conditions in Connolly park. This was a low scoring affair, with both defences on top throughout, with each team finding scores difficult to come by.

St Pats defended stoutly throughout, with Mikey Cahill, Eoghan Murphy and Brian Murphy, in particular, excelling. Eoin Greaney and Shane Jordan worked very hard at midfield, where they did trojan work carrying the ball forward, especially against the wind. Up front, Gearoid Dillane stood out again, constantly showing for and using the ball effectively.

Overall it was a good performance but not the result we were looking for. Hopefully we can get our first win very soon.

St Brendan’s League Final 2015

St Pats 0-05    John Mitchel’s 1-07

This game proved to be a complete non-event with the only good to be taken from the whole evening was the fact the final was played on Good Friday. Football was the big loser in a match that was devoid of passion excitement and quality football.

The first half is best summed up by the match statistics 0-03 a piece at the short whistle 3 wide’s each and one yellow card for both teams.

The game was 12 minutes old before Mitchel’s registered the first score of the game with a point from Ciaran Singleton, Breandean Savage equalised two minutes later for St Pats. Both teams scored two points each in the second quarter Alan O’Donoughue and Shane O’Connor for Mitchel’s, Brendan Poff and Willie Hurley for St Pats. Half time score St Pats 0-03 John Mitchel’s 0-03

Both teams made changes for the start of the second half Joe Costello came in for Eoin Sayers (St Pats) Oliver Coffey on for J O’Halloran (Mitchel’s). St Pats deployed a more orthodox set up for the second half and this allowed Mitchel’s the space needed to take control of the game.

Alan O’Donoughue hit a purple patch for Mitchel’s in the first ten minutes scoring one point himself and setting up two more for Oliver Coffey and a Sean O’Mahoney free.

The Game was settled as contest on the three quarter mark when Mike Deane hit a well taken goal for  Mitchel’s to leave the score St Pats 0-03 Mitchel’s 1-06.

It took St Pats all of 18 minutes to register their first point of the second half with a Joe Costello point, Kieran Hurley scored his first point of the hour three minutes later but the game was over as a contest at this stage. John Mitchel’s scored the final point of the game from a Sean Moloney free to leave the final score St Pats 0-05 John Mitchel’s 1-07

This was a dour game of football but this won’t bother John Mitchel’s as they collect the first piece of silverware of the year.

John Mitchel’s were deserving winners simply because they were fitter more organised and held their nerve. St Pats yielded very little in the first half and were very tight defensively, however a change of tactics for the second half proved fatal and allowed John Mitchel’s the space needed to take control of the game

Best for St Pats on the night were Jordan Conway, Tommy O’Connor, Michael O’Sullivan, Eoin Sayers and substitutes Joe Costello and Conor Moore

Man of the Match was Alan O’Donoughue John Mitchel’s

We wish Paudi Bailey a speedy recovery from a shoulder injury he picked up during the pre-match warm up

U-16’s:
Castlegregory 5 – 10, St Pats 3 – 6
On our first outing of the season, we were beaten by an excellent Castlegregory team on Monday night. Castle started brightly, scoring a goal after two minutes. They pushed hard in the opening period, but were thwarted time and again thanks to some excellent defending from Mikey Cahill and Joe O Connor. In the 14th minute, Shane Jordan produced a crucial turnover, feeding Eoin Greaney. His incisive pass played in Gearoid Dillane, who struck a great goal. This was followed by 2 quick points, struck by Gearoid and a fine long range effort from Joe Quilter.

Up one point at the interval, Castel scored two quickfire goals at the beginning of the second half. We responded well, with Fergal O’ Brien and Brian Murphy driving the team on from the half back line. Adam Boyle set up Eoghan Murphy for a great finish and this was quickly followed by a instinctive poachers finish from James Friel. Castel finished the stronger, despite a couple of great saves from Sean Hogan.
Best for St Pats were Joe O Connor, Brian Murphy, Adam Boyle and Gearoid Dillane.

Seniors:
County League Division 3 Round 2
St Pats 1-07 Ballymac 2-07
This Division 3 round 2 County League game played in a wind-swept Ballymac on Saturday evening was a robust encounter that saw local side Ballymac prevail by 4 points.

St Pats started the game brightly registering an early Gary ‘’Lar’’ Savage goal in the first 3 minutes of the game Kieran Hurley kicked a point two minutes later and all was going to plan.

Ballymac kept in touch with two points of their own. St Pats were dealt a major blow on the quarter hour mark when David O’Callaghan had to leave the field of play after picking up an injury.

This was further compounded when Ballymac goaled a minute later to take the lead, A lead they would never relinquish.

Ballymac scored a further 2 points in the second quarter with St Pats only managing a Kieran Hurley point in the 24th minute to leave the half time score Ballymac 1-05 St Pats 1-03.

St Pats were dealt a further blow before half time when Kevin O’Shea had to retire from action with a hamstring injury He was replaced by Kieran O’Dwyer.

The second half was riddled with errors from both sides with some poor passing bad wides and several borderline challenges.

Kieran Hurley pulled a point back with a pointed free after nine minutes of the restart further misfortune was to hit St Pats when midfielder Michael O’Sullivan came off injured after a robust tackle three minutes later,

Indeed Michael was the subject of some rough tackling in the first half and was off the pitch with a bloody nose for ten minutes.

The game was settled as a contest at the three quarter mark when Ballymac scored their second goal from the boot of Mossie Shanahan after St Pat’s were caught on the break.

The last quarter was riddled with dodgy challenges and it is amazing that both teams managed to finish the game with a full complement of players.

St Pats scored 2 points in the last quarter from the boot of Substitutes Eoin Sayers and David Kerins with Ballymac kicking one further Mossie Shanahan point to leave the final score Ballymac 2-07 St Pats 1-07.

The last few minutes of the game were marred by a hefty off the ball tackle on Jordan Conway which again went unpunished.

This was a game that St Pats never got to grips with and were never at ease with the robust physical approach of Ballymac.

The loss of David O’Callaghan, Kevin O’Shea and Michael O’Sullivan at vital stages in the game robbed St Pats of vital leadership.

St Pats struggled all over the pitch in this game with Paul McMahon and Jordan Conway trying hard in defence, Michael O’Sullivan tried hard in the middle of the field until he retired injured.

Brendan Poff , David O’Callaghan(inj 14 min), Sean Hayes and Kieran Hurley were best in attack.

Ballymac’s Mossie Shanahan was the man of the Match ably assisted by Aidan Breen.

St Pats – Paudi Bailey, Conor Moore, Pau Mc Mahon, Jordan ConwayLiam Poff, Kevin O’Shea, Andy Byrne, Michael O’Sullivan, Liam O’Sullivan, Brendan Poff, Sean Hayes, David O’Callaghan, Gary ‘’Lar’’ Savage, Kieran Hurley, Willie Hurley. Barrett Cup Final:

St Pats 2-8

Beaufort 2-6

Pride of the parish this week goes to our Junior team who completed a league and championship double when they defeated Beaufort in the Barrett Cup final last Saturday.

Played in a very sporting manner in great underfoot conditions in Farranfore, St Pats played into a stiff breeze in the opening half. Beaufort registered two quick early points from frees before St Pats replied with points by Anton O’Callaghan and David Kerins.

Lady luck played her part in the first goal of the game which fell in favour of St Pats. Adrian Greaney played a speculative ball high into the square to full forward Thomas “Massi” O’Sullivan.

Massi failed to connect but the on-rushing Beaufort goalie misjudged the flight of the ball and it bounced over his head and into the net to give St Pats a three point lead.

However, Beaufort’s reply was immediate. Their corner forward cut in straight through on goal and after a great save by John “Fizzy” Fitzgerald, the rebound fell into the hands of full forward Kevin O’Brien and he duly dispatched to the net to tie the game.

Jeffrey Foley added a point in the 20th minute to steady the ship for St Pats and from the re-start St Pats struck for their second goal. Greaney got possession around the middle of the field and played a cross-field ball to Brandon Boyle.

With his blinding pace, Brandon rounded his man, ran toward goal and finished neatly to the net to put St Pats in a commanding position approaching half time.

However, Beaufort tapped over two frees just before the short whistle to narrow the gap to two points at the break.

HT Score St Pats 2-3 Beaufort 1-4. St Pats would have been happy with this score-line given the strength of the wind that they played into.

They used the ball wisely with James Costello, Anton O’Callaghan and Jeffrey Foley conducting proceedings. The second half yet again saw St Pats dominate possession but they were extremely wasteful with their kicking notching up a total of 14 wides in the second half.

They never really pulled away from Beaufort who never gave up fighting. Greaney kicked the first point of the second half which Beaufort quickly cancelled out through a free from O’Brien.

Pats dominated the next 10 minutes but their wide tally was mounting up and this gave heart to Beaufort who raided attacks on the St Pats rearguard. One such attack lead to their second goal with some good interplay between the half forwards creating an overlap.

The ball was fed to Dan Doonan, now playing at the edge of the square and he slotted past Fizzy to tie the game. The next 10 minutes were a nervy affair with both teams swapping points, St Pats scores coming from Brendain Savage and Massi.

Going into the last five minutes, play had to be halted after a cow ran on to the pitch to big roars of laughter from supporters and players alike!

The CCC are currently studying video footage provided by Luke “Chesty” Mulligan of the encroachment and she faces a long ban from all GAA activities!

When the game was re-started, it was the Pats that gained the upper hand after a monster point from Brendan Savage was quickly followed by another from David Kerins.

However, as everyone knows, a 2 point lead is a dangerous lead going into the final stages of a game.

Beaufort launched one last attack on the St Pats goal. After a goal mouth scramble, the ball broke loose and a goal bound shot was miraculously cleared off the St Pats line by Joe Costello.

Jordan Conway kicked the ball out over the sideline and the referee blew the final whistle which sparked huge celebrations amongst the St Pats players, mentors and supporters.

It was the first championship title for the club in 20 years so it was well overdue. Huge credit goes to the management team of Pat Foley, Kevin Quirke & Pat Stack who built a great team with mixture of youth and experience.

Captain Anton O’Callaghan lifted the cup and gave a fantastic speech as gaeilge. Huge credit must go to Beaufort who were missing players from their semi final win but they never gave up and fought right to the end.

Well done also to Firies GAA Club for having the pitch in perfect condition for the game and the referee did an excellent job officiating the game, which was played in a very sporting manner.
