A BIG crowd turned up on Tuesday, despite the inclement conditions, for the now annual August Maharees Conservation Association beach clean.

Sponsored by Outwest this year, approximately 8kms of coastline was cleaned on the day by over 60 volunteers.  All participants were treated to free treats in Spillane’s Bar and Restaurant afterwards courtesy of Outwest.

Clean Coasts and Splash Sports were also on hand on the day to provide equipment, guidance and help with the bag collection and the Kerry County Council Dingle Area team picked up all the bags from key collection points.

Shane Finn of Outwest said: “Outwest is delighted to be partnering with Maharees Conservation for this event. We recognise the incredible work that they do and the huge effort that goes into protecting this amazing place we get to call home. We’d encourage anyone to research some of the fantastic work Maharees Conversatoom does or better again, join us in getting involved.”

Martha Farrell from Maharees Conservation Association said: “Brandon Bay boasts the longest beach on the west coast of Ireland. It’s a stunning beach with a spectacular dune system and the Maharees Conservation team is actively working to protect it and its wildlife.”

“Huge thanks to everyone who turned out today despite the conditions – we’re blown away as usual by the spirit shown by our local and visiting community! We are so delighted to partner with Outwest on this clean up.”

“We will be running our fun quiz this Thursday night at 9pm at the Green Room Bar to support our Maharees Heritage committee and their Maharees Weekend in September,” she added.

Elaine Doyle, Clean Coasts Campaigns and Development Officer for Kerry and Cork said: “Clean Coasts are delighted to be here today. Beach cleaning is a simple but important step in keeping our waterways litter free. Important for not only ourselves but water quality and the wonderful marine life that call our oceans their home. The Maharees Conservation Association are such a symbol of the power of community and how we can make a difference to our world from our own locality.” Scroll down for photos…

A Special Challenge For Runners At Beautiful Brandon Bay

.
Runners in last year’s race.

THE 6th annual Brandon Bay half marathon and 10k event will take place on Saturday, July 20 on the beach around, of course, Brandon Bay.

Set entirely on the Wild Atlantic Way and surrounded by the beauty of the Slieve Mish mountains and Mt Brandon itself, the event, participants never leave the beach from the moment they arrive until the moment they leave.

The race both starts and finishes at Fahamore on the Maharees (near Spillane’s Bar) and is set on what is known as an ‘out and back’ style course where participants both start and finish the race at the same place having ran out and then returned to complete both distances.

The event, as always, is organised by Castlegregory Celtic FC as a fundraiser and is entirely not-for-profit with all proceeds going not only to the soccer club but also to many other community groups and international charities as well.

This year’s chosen beneficiaries are: The Maharees Conservation Association, Friends from Ireland Charity, Aughacashla National School and Scoil Náisiúnta an Clochán.

Entry into the Brandon Bay half marathon & 10k is open on www.brandonbayhalfmarathon.com and costs €30/€40 for the 10k/half marathon respectively and includes an event tech tee, bespoke event medal, race number and timing chip for all participants.

There is a walk-in registration evening on Friday 19th July from 5-9:30pm in the club rooms in Castlegregory for anyone that doesn’t register online (note – no registrations possible on the day given the remote location of the race!)

Last year’s event was the biggest to date with over 500 registered to walk, jog or run on the beach and numbers to date are on a par with last year so  organisers are expecting another fantastic day on the beach.

VIDEO: Swedish Visitors Film Incredible Drone Footage Of Brandon Bay

Radio Kerry
.

IT can sometimes be people from outside Kerry who best show the beauty of the county  we love.

That’s certainly the case from this video of Brandon Bay produced by Swedish water-sports enthusiast, Magnus Kallin, who was blown away by the area while here for two weeks last month.

The footage, shows Magnus and a buddy surfing and windsurfing in the Maherees and Banna.

It seems they had quite a good time on their travels, they even go as far as to dedicate the video “to the good people of Kerry”.

Major Newspaper Names Brandon Bay Among Europe’s Best Walking Routes

FIRST we had Banna being included in the Top 10 beaches in Ireland earlier today and now another scenic attraction, this time ‘west of the bridge’, has come in for high praise from a major English newspaper.

Brandon Bay has been named amongst the top 24 walking routes in Europe in a recent article in the ‘Telegraph Travel’, in the heady company of the Alps and the Somme walk.

The article is effusive in its praise for the route and the area in general as it describes it as a ‘Dingle Peninsula delight’.

It invites you to take a stroll along the eight-mile stretch of the Maharees sandspit beside Brandon Bay and soak up the beautiful scenery on offer with the towering presence of Mount Brandon always on hand to leave you in awe.

You are warned to expect superb beach walking, stunning backdrops and a route that will (in a good way!) leave you breathless.

It is in esteemed company in the prestigious list with ‘The Bangor Trail’ in County Mayo, stunning walks through the Alps in Switzerland and ‘The Somme Walks’ in France.
