CASTLEGREGORY Golf Club Captain Tommy King hosted his Captain’s Prize on Saturday and Sunday last, June 24/25, the format for which was 18 holes stableford.
Close to 100 members and guests pitted themselves against the vagaries of the weather on a course which was splendidly presented by course staff.
First on the course on Saturday morning was last year’s runner-up, Alan O’Connor, who certainly looked out of the running, posting just 14 points off the white markers.
But a pit stop after nine holes certainly envigorated Alan and he shook off the rustiness when playing off the blue markers.

His 24 points on the back nine was a turn up for the books, giving him a total of 38 points and set the mark for all golfers to follow.
Despite changing weather conditions on Saturday and Sunday, none of subsequent participants could better Alan’s score.
Club President, Eddie Hanafin equalled the 38 pts, but Alan was declared the winner on the back nine. Alan was a most popular winner and now will represents the club in the All-Ireland final in Roscrea and the Kerryman Captains’s Challenge in October.
The presentation of prizes took place in The Station House, Blenneville, on Sunday night. Captain Tommy thanked everyone who had helped to make the weekend an outstanding success, particularly sponsors Irish Life, Ballyroe Country Club Hotel and Nick of Tomaisin’s and Station House.
Overall results: 1, Alan O’Connor (17) 38pts; 2, Eddie Hanafin (10) 38pts; 3, Aidan Smith (14) 37pts; Gross, Joe Mulcahy (9) 28pts; Past Captain, Eddie Hanafin; Front 9, Noel McCoy (14) 22pts; Back 9, Dermot Foley (19) 19pts; Longest Drive, Denis Dowling; Nearest the Pin, Dermot Foley. CASTLEGREGORY Golf and Fishing Club played host to The Kerryman Captain’s Challenge on the Dr Arthur G Spring designed course on Saturday last.
With the weather more akin to Spain than West Kerry on the October Bank Holiday weekend, the course was shown at its pristine best to all visiting golfers.
The sun shone bright in a clear blue sky, reflecting off the azure waters of Lough Gill and Brandon Bay. In a very relaxed atmosphere, the participants enjoyed tea/coffee and scone on arrival, prior to the shotgun start.

Visitors were greeted by Club Captain and Tournament Director, Mike Mercer and club secretary, Eddie Hanafin, who made the draw for golfers, going out in three balls.
The competition, for all Captain’s Prizewinners of Kerry golf clubs, ladies and gents, was 18 holes singles stableford. Local knowledge proved decisive in the Men’s competition, where Castlegregory’s Tommy King, had a clear lead over his fellow competitors.
Tommy who is incidentally, club vice-captain and treasurer, had 39pts on his card, which ensured he was taking home the magnificent perpetual Waterford Crystal Trophy. Geoffrey O’Mahony, representing Dooks and David Walsh, Parknasilla, were second and third respectively.
In the ladies competition, the scoring was much closer than the gents section. After scrutinising the cards to make sure everything was in order, Jenny Pigott, representing Dooks Golf Club, was declared the winner. Jenny had one point to spare over Mags Hayes, Tralee Golf Club with Julianne Browne, Castleisland, in third place.
The guest prize went to Castlegregory member, Carmel Kearney, who pipped Club Chairman, Tom Moriarty.

Following golf, the participants and guests, adjourned to Tomaisin’s Restaurant, Stradbally for dinner and presentation of prizes. Castlegregory Captain, Mike Mercer and Paul Brennan, Kerryman Sports Editor, were on hand to welcome all.
Mike thanked all who had represented their clubs and hoped they enjoyed the competition, the facilities of Castlegregory Golf Club and the hospitality extended. It is hoped that the tournament will be an annual fixture in Castlegregory Golf Club.
He also thanked Mr John Feerick, Managing Director of The Kerryman, for sponsoring the tournament. The Management Committee of Castlegregory Golf Club were also thanked for granting the use of the course and club on the day.
Also present was Desmond Fitzgerald, who was one of the people who inaugurated the competition, when he was Captain of Tralee Golf Club.
Paul Brennan, representing The Kerryman, said he was delighted to see the competition up and running, having been dormant for a number of years. He thanked Castlegregory Golf Club for hosting the competition and wished them continued success with the tournament in the future.
CASTLEGREGORY Golf and Fishing Club recently unveiled a plaque to commemorate course designer, the late Dr Arthur G Spring who died in May 2015.
The official unveiling was performed by club captain, Mike Mercer and Julianne Spring, representing the Spring family.
Tom Moriarty, Chairman of Club Management, gave a very informed outline of the Club’s history and the input made by Dr Spring in designing the course.
In the intervening 25 years many changes have taken place but the original course design remains the same, testament to Dr Spring’s vision.

Graham Spring responded on behalf of the Spring family and said they were deeply honoured by the club with the plaque unveiling.
Graham said that his late father was very proud of the course he designed situated between Lough Gill and Brandon Bay.
The plaque is situated between the putting green and the first tee box and the inscription reads:
‘Castlegregory Golf Links This course was designed by Dr Arthur G Spring “An absolute gem of a links”
Prior to the unveiling there was a Three Person Scramble which saw a John Mitchels Trio of John Joe Sheehy, Niall Sheehy and Mike Burrows win.

Light refreshments were enjoyed by all following the unveiling and a big thank you to all who helped.

CLUB FUNDRAISER: Our Annual Weekend Club Fundraiser takes place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, August 19/20/21. Team of four €120 with two scores to count at each hole.
Members are asked to help in organising teams and with sponsorship of tee boxes and greens. Let’s all pull together to make the event a success.
JUNIOR CLUB: If anyone has any starter/beginner/small/medium sized clubs gathering dust in their garages, and would like to donate them to the junior club cache, the committee would be delighted to take them from you.
Whilst most of the juniors have their own clubs, some beginners very new to the game – with great potential – haven’t invested yet and it would be great to enable them to try out a variety before doing so. Thanks in advance.
ALL the invocations that were called upon last weekend for the Captain’s Prize (Mike Mercer) worked well with Apollo, the God of Sunlight, coming out on top for the duration of the competition.
With close to 100 competitors, sponsors, guests and not forgetting the Mna, the course was very busy from first tee off on Saturday morning to the close of play on Sunday afternoon.
The leading qualifier on Saturday, Alan O’Connor, posted a remarkable score of 44pts, which was not bettered on Sunday.

When the last of the 18 hole qualifiers came off the 18th green on Sunday afternoon, his closest rivals Pat Doody, Tony Conroy and Tommy King were five points adrift with 39pts.
The nine hole play off provided plenty of drama with all the pursuers trying to eat into Alan’s lead. It wasn’t until the last putt fell in that the overall winner was known and best of the chasing pack was Tommy King. His 20pts in the play-off coupled with his morning score of 39pts gave him a total of 59pts and with it his first club major, Captain’s Prize winner 2016.
Tommy will now represent the club in the Kerryman Captains’ Challenge, hosted by Castlegregory in September.
He also goes into the All-Ireland Captain’s Winners, hosted by Roscrea Golf Club. We wish him every success when representing Castlegregory in these competitions.
There were many stories of putts that fell in and of course those that lipped out by all contenders. Good luck deserted Alan O’Connor on Sunday afternoon, but he can feel very proud of his achievement in finishing second and it won’t be too long before he lands his first major.
There are many strings to our winner’s bow – apart from being vice-captain and treasurer of the men’s club, he’s a dab hand at the barbecue.
He was ably assisted by the Blennerville chef, Richard Rowan, whose culinary skills fed a multitude. El Presidente, Sean Spillane, failed to get a HIQUA approved cert and so he was barred from going near the cooking area for fear of litigation.
The success of the weekend would not have been possible without the help of a lot of people who ensured everything was in place. The course managers Tom and Sean along with Mike and Joe, ensured the fairways and greens were in pristine condition and a credit to their efforts.
Our club staff Joan, Pat and Nora made sure all who crossed the threshold were fed and watered. The back-up team of ladies and gents were also to the fore in ensuring that nobody was left out of the equation.
A big thank to all who helped make the Captain’s Prize such an enjoyable weekend. This would not have been possible without the generous support of our sponsors – Brian Kearney (Irish Life), Ballyroe Heights Hotel, Rick Earley, Richie Greer and Dan Healy Butchers.
The presentation of prizes took place at the Seven Hogs on Sunday with a large number of members and guests in attendance. Thanks to our long term sponsor Tim Golden and his staff for his continued support and hospitality.
AT THE second time of asking Club President Sean Spillane got Apollo, the God of Sunlight, to shine his rays over Stradbally on Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday.
He was a bit slow off the mark on Saturday morning and some competitors had to make do with Notus, the God of Wet and Stormy South Wind, while trying to put a good score together.
Conditions favoured those on Sunday and it was no surprise that 42 pts was posted prior to lunch by John Dillane. Despite the best efforts of the chasing pack, John’s score was four points ahead of second place, King of the Lefties, Joe Mulcahy.
Third, fourth and fifth – Colin O’Sullivan, George Nash and Joe Parker – each had 37 pts, with a lost ball on the 18th proving costly for the former Austin Stacks goalkeeper, Joe.
Barry Martin’s 21pts and Tommy King’s 24pts won the front and back nine respectively. Chairman of Management, Tom Moriarty, won nearest the pin.
Presentation of prizes took place in Spillane’s Bar and Restaurant, Maharees, later that night. President Sean welcomed one and all and thanked those who had played over the two weekends.
Sincere thanks to sponsors Micheal Lynch, Spar Castlegregory, Con and Dan O’Connor, IMG Financial Solutions, Mike Fitzgerald Jnr and James Costelloe of Forest Produce.
Also to our genial hosts on the night Mike, Marilyn and Rose Spillane for their hospitality.
Having given three years to the club as President, we thank him for the time, effort and commitment and know that we can call on his support in the years ahead.
The man Sean entrusted with donning the President’s mantle is former club captain, Eddie Hanafin. Eddie is another club stalwart, having served the club in a number of positions and we wish him all the best when he takes office.

Here’s what their writer had to say: “Traveling farther down the West Coast and driving beyond the practice greens of Ballybunion, Lahinch and Tralee is Castlegregory on the Dingle Peninsula. Surely I am not recommending a 9-holer? I will grant you access to one of the usual suspects in the morning, but following a couple pints of Guinness while watching the boats bob up and down off the Inch Peninsula, it seems appealing to play nine more, doesn’t it? Castlegregory gifts dramatic views across to Tralee, the steep-sided Mount Brandon as a backdrop and a challenge that simply not enough people know about. But, that’s its charm.”
High praise indeed which may bring a few more visitors down to this part of the country.

MEMBERS of Castlegregory Golf Club handed over a cheque to volunteers at Recovery Haven after a hugely successful fundraiser recently.
Hundreds of people gathered at the Ballyroe Heights Hotel on Friday, January 22 for the Strictly Come Dancing event and people gave generously to both the club and Recovery Haven.
On Saturday morning the Recovery Haven welcomed the members who gave them a cheque for €500.
“It’s fantastic to give the money to such a worthy cause,” said Castlegregory Golf Club member, Geraldine Flynn, who was joint MC and helped organise the night.

“There isn’t a family that hasn’t been affected by cancer and it’s a fantastic support service here,” she said.
Eileen Comerford, a volunteer at Recovery Haven, was delighted with the contribution.
“We’re thrilled to have the proceeds from the competition. It’s a great benefit for us to have an outside community donate to us here and as we get no Government funding, we’re totally dependent of wonderful people like those at Castlegregory Golf Club,” said Eileen.
IT was a brilliant night at Ballyroe Heights Hotel on Friday, as nine couples took to the floor displaying their fleet-footed moves to raise funds for Castlegregory Golf and Fishing Club and Recovery Haven.
Yesterday, we told you that Anne Kerins and Tom Ferriter’s efforts stole the show at the ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ event and they were crowned the overall winners on the night (for our previous story and coverage click here).
“A big thank you to the dancers, choreographer and all who helped in any way to make the night such an outstanding success,” said Captain of Castlegregory Golf Club, Mike Mercer. “The event would not have taken off without the infectious enthusiasm of Geraldine Flynn’s organising skills. Take a bow all!”
Here’s another 20 photos of some of the 300 plus people who enjoyed the show on the night.
OVER 300 people went to the Ballyroe Heights Hotel on Friday night for a fantastic night of entertainment, to raise funds for Castlegregory Golf and Fishing Club.
Nine couples, made up of members of the club and from Tralee Musical Society, took to the dance floor and wowed judges and audiences alike with their great performances, thanks to the expert dance teachings of Jackie O’Mahony.
MCs John Drummey and Geraldine Flynn did an exemplary job, while the judges – Orlagh Winters, Deputy Arthur J Spring, Fergus Moroney and Miriam Mulhall Nolan – had a tough task to pick the outstanding act.
The public also had their say as they voted for their favourite couple and in the end Anne Kerins and Tom Ferriter were deemed the worthy overall winners, while Recovery Haven also benefitted from the night.
