MAYOR of Tralee, Cllr Graham Spring, was delighted to open a new project at a Mitchels estate on Wednesday night.
Young people who were part of the Community Regeneration Street Art project were present to receive certificates from the Mayor for their work on a fantastic initiative which began in November 2017.
The theme and the intention was to play with paint to create an exuberant, colourful area behind the Aras an Phobail building near Croilar Na Mistealach.

The 20 plus fabulous murals which are now mounted on the walls were created by the young people who live on Croilar Na Mistealach and the young people from St. Brigid’s Community Centre, supported by KDYS Youth Workers and artist Muiriosa Murphy.
Tremendous fun was had by all, a lot was learned and a good deal of paint was scrubbed off of floor and walls in the process.
The benches and bins outside were also decorated in fun colours. Advantage was taken of the beautiful weather in the month of May to stencil lots of children’s games, including a Maize and Hopscotch, on the ground.
The intention was to create a fun outdoor space for the community to use, and as the project progressed and colour and life started to enter the area, how people used the space changed.

Office workers came out for their breaks and strolled about looking at the art and sitting and talking with their colleagues in the sunshine.
The project was completed to such a high standard with the help of the residents of Croilar Na Mistealach, the Tús Workers in the Community Gardens, residents of Johnson Marina and the users of the TIRC centre. The project was funded by Kerry County Council as part of regeneration initiative. Scroll down for photos…
A COMMUNITY group in the Mitchels area has been busy all week with activities for kids in the area and held a Halloween party for kids on Friday.
The Croilar Na Mhistealach residents community has set up in Aras an Phobail building and provided fun events for kids to do in the evening while they’re on their midterm holidays from school.
With help from North and East Kerry Development, they took part in arts and crafts on Monday and Tuesday, followed by a movie night while on Thursday they showed the movie ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’.
Capping off the week though, was a Halloween party on Friday.
“It’s nice to do because at the moment it gets dark early so the children can’t play outside,” said Kristine Silina of Croilar Na Mhistealach residents community. “They can get bored at home so we can have them hear an hour and a half and play games.”
The group regularly holds activities for kids and soon will be rolling out arts and crafts activities for adults in the lead up to Christmas.
CHILDREN from Croilar Na Mhistealach showed pride in their area on Thursday when they displayed posters as part of a special evening.
Croilar Na Mhistealach Residents Committee was established in October 2013 in conjunction with the Housing Transition Programme delivered by CAFTA (Community & Family Training Agency) Ballymun, Dublin and funded by Tralee Town Council.
Every single door of the Residents that were allocated new homes in Croilar Na Mhistealach was knocked on by CAFTA inviting residents to the programme.
Linda Ward and Valerie Keating from Dublin spent eight weeks with the residents and helped us greatly with information of regeneration and helping to start the Residents Committee.
“They have been in regular contact of our progress and they came to visit us,” said Kristine Silina of the Residents Committee.
“It was informal and positive evening for residents to come together and have a chat in relaxed, friendly atmosphere and look back on all activities and achievements we have achieved in such a short time,” she said.
As part of the evening, the Committee organised a colouring, drawing, painting competition for estate’s children. Its theme was “My Street” and 10 submissions were received and displayed on the evening, everyone received a prize – all were winners.
“These small events will be great memories for the young generation in years to come,” said Kristine.
The committee wished to extend thanks to all residents, Lorraine Bowler – NEKD, Kathy (Community Garda), and Lynda and Valerie (CAFTA) for attending and participating.
CROILAR na Mhistealach Residents Committee held a Flower Planting Workshop for the estate’s children on Saturday.
Last year, the committee bought 10 hanging flower baskets to display between houses and this spring they decided to reuse them and involve children in planting the flowers.
“It was an educational and hands-on workshop where children got involved in preparing the flower baskets,” said Kristine Silina of the residents committee.
“A few weeks ago residents came together for big Spring Clean -up and after that other estate enhancement jobs will be following. Croilar na Mhistealach Residents Committee and residents take great pride in the visual look of street and it greatly paid off last year by receiving Tralee Tidy Towns award,” said Kristine.
The commitee applied for funding to NEKD for flowers, shrubs and soil and it was successfully granted, which is greatly appreciated by the committee.
CROILAR Na Mistealach residents came together for Christmas party in Aras an Phobail community room on Sunday for a great Christmas party.
“It’s a great way to get the residents together,” said James O’Sullivan of the residents committee. “We have the Christmas party and our family fun day in the summer. Many of them may not see each other socially otherwise,” he added.
Fantastic entertainment was provided by Debbie Pierson from Animal Roadshow, Mallow. Kids got to know and touch a snake, a bearded dragon lizard, a rabbit, a tarantula and an owl.
Then the most eagerly awaited visitor, Santa, arrived and gifted 25 children with sweets. Everyone left happy and thanked the Residents Committee for hosting another great event where all neighbours can come together.
