FROM delving into the Bronze Age at Siamsa to enjoying meat pies in Maddens, there was loads going in town for Culture Night on Friday.

The evening was dry so people could move around to different events if they wished and they had much to choose from.

There was a big crowd in The Ashe Hotel for a youth choral performance under the instruction of Lisa Curran.

We called to Siamsa Tíre to see Artist-in-Residence, Conor O’Grady working and showing visitors around. Meanwhile, just outside was a fascinating glimpse into the past with ‘Casting Light on Ireland’s Bronze Age’ which saw artists Holger Lonze and friends tell the story behind Ireland’s archaeological artefacts. They also cast replicas of small sculptures inspired by the archaeology of Kerry.

A stone’s throw away in The Abbey Inn saw poets gather for a ‘Flash Dash & Poetry Slam’ organised by the Thursday Night Writers in Tralee.

We met members of Tralee Art Group who were holding an event in Baile Mhuire where visitors could create their own postcards which would then hang in the entrance. Also in the same venue, Ceilí Afro Dabke was presented by Catherine Young Dance & the Welcoming Project.

Finally, we visited Maddens on Milk Market Lane who were hosting a special event as Rebekah Wall explained.

“Well this area used to be known as pie lane because there were women who lived on Milk Market Lane who made and sold pies. So for Culture Night we decided to re-embrace the past and gave out free mutton pies, which we got from The Mall and broth made by Doireann Barrett, to visitors here.”

With more events in Tralee and beyond, it was a good night for Culture vultures. Scroll down for photos…

She is happy to promote and advocate the support of culture locally and is calling out to all ages and especially to young people ‘to check out the programme and take part in an arts event, there’s huge choice’.

“Some of my fondest memories of growing up in Kerry include getting the opportunity to participate and perform with various local musical ensembles. I believe everyone is creative in different ways and that art in whatever form, is one of the best ways of expressing that creativity. Take your opportunity to join us, for free, at your local culture night event and see what role culture in Kerry could play in your life.”, stated Gemma at the launch for Culture Night in Kerry at County Buildings this week.

Trying something different, visiting a gallery, theatre, museum or arts centre, is the message and “our arts and cultural venues offer up a wonderful mix of free events that are fun-filled and very family friendly”, says Mayor of Kerry, Councillor Norma Foley.

The variety on offer ensures there is an event that will appeal to everyone, with free events, tours, talks, screenings & performances that suit all tastes and ages. Culture Night is an easy-going, relaxed way of enjoying arts and culture locally.

In Tralee and Killarney, visitors can go from venue to venue, sampling art, music, film, literature and dance, while from Listowel to Kenmare there are multiple events to choose from across all the art forms.

All events are free for the people to enjoy. For more details go to www.culturenight.ie/kerry  or www.culturekerry.com

CULTURE Night this year takes place on Friday, September 21 and offers the public a free opportunity to see the work of artists and creative industry professionals, arts organisations and cultural venues on the night.

“A great many venues across Kerry stay open late into the night and use the platform as an opportunity to engage with the public, to find new audiences and new visitors to their premises” says Kate Kennelly, the Arts Officer at Kerry County Council.

It also represents an opportunity for communities in towns and villages to plan their culture night events so that audiences can move from venue to venue to take in all the events.

The night is supported through the Arts Office who offer promotional support to organisations and groups to get involved.

“The emphasis is on arts activity across all artforms, such as music, dance, film, art and literature and it is designed so that anyone can experience an arts event in their local area,” stated An Cathaoirleach, Councillor Norma Foley.

The Arts Office is reaching out to new communities and all towns and villages to get involved in a programme of events for their area. With the addition of some support from Creative Ireland there is an enhanced focus on creativity.

“As a teacher I have seen first-hand the huge benefits to young people who experience the arts, not just in self-expression and creativity but also for the positive benefits to mental health and well-being”, Councillor Foley went on to say.

Anyone interested in getting involved is being asked to contact the Arts Office by the 20thJuly and by email to arts@kerrycoco.ie or by phone to 066 7183782/7183541
