THE Brandon Hotel was a busy place on Saturday as the Kerry Islamic Outreach Society hosted its fifth annual Islamic Cultural Exhibition.
Despite the distraction of the Kerry v Mayo game that afternoon, there was still a good turnout for the event which is held so that people could learn about the religion and dispel any misconceptions about Islam.
Deputy Michael Healy Rae called in, as did Fr Tadhg Fitzgerald from St John’s Parish and there were a host of stands containing information about Islam and people on hand to answer any questions.
With free gift bags, free henna painting, face painting, having your name written in Arabic calligraphy and much more, it was an informative and enjoyable visit for many. Scroll down for photos…

In the last four years, hundreds from the local community have attended the exhibition in order to learn about the faith and rituals of their friends in the religious community.
THE Kerry Islamic Outreach Society’s ‘Fourth Annual Islamic Cultural Exhibition’ drew more people than in previous years to the Brandon Hotel on Saturday.
The event is held to give visitors a greater understanding of the teachings of Islam, to correct misconceptions about the religion and for a chance to meet and interact with the local Muslim community.
Dr Rizwan Khan, Chairman of the Kerry Islamic Outreach Society, was delighted with how the exhibition went when we spoke to him near the conclusion of the event.
“Today has been excellent. It’s our fourth annual exhibition and there has been a constant flow of people all day. Last year we had 200 guests but that number was surpassed hours ago,” said Dr Khan.
“But we are not concerned about numbers, it’s more satisfaction that people are coming. This year, people are coming to ask questions about Islam, rather than coming for a cup of tea, looking around and then leaving. There’s more interaction,” he said.
Deputy Michael Healy Rae was also in attendance and spoke to those present, with special words of praise for the Muslim community.
“I believe the people who have come here like yourselves, had your children here and working here in different industries, are really contributing to life in this country. I’m so happy that the children here today are the future and they will be able to get on with their education, to find work and stay here. There are a few core principles you have; One is your religion, which I respect very much. Number two is your work ethic and number three is your family and you work around those three pillars,” he said.
He also expressed his admiration for their discipline of fasting during Ramadan.
“I don’t know how ye do it. If I was to do it I’d say I’d fall down through a crack in the road! I’d have to put on a bit of condition before I could do that,” he said.
Deputy Healy Rae said it was very important that people were educated as to what Islam stands for and what it means to the local Muslim community. He said their work, family and religious ethics were to be admired.
There was also free gift bags, free henna painting, face painting, having your name written in Arabic calligraphy along information on benefits of fasting and many more.
This year there were topics such as ‘women’s rights in Islam’, ‘Islam and extremism in the context of current political affairs’ and the prophet Muhammad and his message. There was also donations accepted for the ADAPT Shelter at the exhibition. Scroll down for photos…
THE Third Annual Kerry Islamic Cultural Exhibition was held in the Brandon Hotel Conference Centre on Saturday afternoon with large crowds attending the event.
Organisers had worked long into the night to have everything ready to go for the day and it certainly didn’t disappoint with guides on hand to show visitors around and answer any questions they might have.
The event was designed to highlight the positivity of Islam within the community with politicians and young families coming down to show their support for the day.
Visitors were able to have their name written in Arabic Calligraphy or have a fantastically artistic Henna tattoo inscribed (temporarily) on their hands on the day while AV presentations on various topics were available throughout, one for example discussing the role of women in the religion.
Information boards were well placed around the perimeter of the hall and offered visitors the chance to learn about the Five Pillars of Islam.
“This has been the busiest of our three years now. Last year, we had around 250 people and we have already hit that target now with two hours still to go,” said Dr Rizwan Khan, one of the main organisers of the event.
“We’re delighted about it [the turnout]. There are a lot of repeat visitors coming, which is very reassuring because it shows that people trust us and that there is relationship and friendship building here as well. We are very happy that the wider community is welcoming us in as well,” he continued.
“The Mayor of Tralee is here already, there are multiple Councillors here as well. Sam Locke, Norma Foley was here and Toireasa Ferris was here along with the Garda Superintendent Pat O’Sullivan too. We are very delighted to get the response and we are very thankful to everyone for coming,” he finished.
