Senior County League:

Our seniors- sponsored by Larkin’s Bar and Restaurant and Kelly’s Londis Top Shop, were very unlucky at the weekend-beaten by the narrowest of margins by Dingle in Round 5 of The County League-Division 1.

The home side played with wind advantage in the opening half but it was the visitors who got off to the better start.

Dingle opened the scoring but a Jack McCarthy pointed free had the sides level after 5 minutes. Four un- answered points including the efforts of Barry O’ Sullivan and Conor Geaney saw Dingle lead 0-5 to 0-1 after 15 minutes.

However the second quarter saw the home side reply with points from Jack McCarthy and Jeremiah Hayes and a Jerome Flynn goal gave them a lead of 1-05 to 0-6 at the break.

Two quick fire points by Dingle on resumption saw the sides level. A point from Gavin Horan saw MC resume the lead in the 35th minute but that was to be their last score for the next 20 minutes.

In that time, Dingle scored 6 un answered pints giving them a comfortable lead and they looked like certain winners.

However,  in the last 5 minutes, MC rallied. A cracker of a goal by Donal Dennehy and a Donal Kelliher point saw the bare minimum between the two sides as the game headed into injury time.

However MC couldn’t get that all important score and so Dingle went west with 2 very valuable points.

MC face An Ghaeltacht in 2 weeks time.

Final Score: Dingle 0-14, Milltown Castlemaine 2-07.

Kerry will have three qualifies for the National weekend. Kerry B, C and D. Kerry A will be in Sligo. Milltown Castlemaine’s U.14’s are in the B qualifiers.

Last Wednesday, Milltown Castlemaine hosted Group 2B of the Kerry Coiste na nÓg Féile Peil na nÓg qualifiers. Milltown Castlemaine played Na Gael in the first game.

Na Gael had a very fast start with two goals in the first minute. Milltown Castlemaine rallied and as the game went into the second half they had levelled the match. However Na Gael lifted their game in the last few minutes to score three consecutive points to win on a score line of Na Gael 3.03 to Milltown Castlemaine 1.06.

The second game was Na Gael v An Ghaeltacht. Na Gael qualified for the Div 2 Féile final as top seeds from this group with a controlled win. Na Gael led from pillar to post with again an early goal having them in control. An Ghaeltacht rallied but the speed of the breaking Na Gael forwards meant that Na Gael won on a score line of Na Gael 3.05 An Ghaeltacht 1.02.

The final place in the Feile semi finals was to be decided by the last game of the evening. Milltown Castlemaine’s very young defence set the platform for their teams win. Their forwards got the room in the second half to ensure that they qualified with a win on a score line of Milltown Castlemaine 2.03 An Ghaeltacht 0.04.

Well done to the players of all three teams for some very entertaining and enjoyable football. Referee for all three games was Paul Hayes, Kerins O’Rahillys.

Na Gael and Milltown Castlemaine qualify for the Division 2 semi finals. which will be held on Wednesday May 3rd. Times and venues to be confirmed.

U 12’s

Our Under 12’s had two excellent games v John Mitchel’s on Sunday evening last. The green team lost 5 11 to 4 11 in a very close, exciting match where they hit the cross bar 5 times and the white team were victorious on a score line of 4 10 to 2 10 after a great come back in the 2nd half.

Well done to Turlough and the entire panel of players.

Blitz:

Our Under 8’s and Under 10’s both had a great time participating in the annual blitz held at John Mitchel’s Tralee. Special thanks to John Mitchel’s for organising the blitz and to all the coaches and mentors from our club for their continued work with these age groups.

Well done to our Under 10’s who had two very enjoyable challenge games against Listry on Friday evening. Thank you to Listry Gaa for the challenge game and to their referee who did an excellent job.

Thanks to all the parents who went along to support their children.

Under 14’s:

Well done to Ian and his under 14 boys on their victory over Ballyduff on Wednesday last. The final score was 5/10 to 3/08.

Their next opponents are An Ghaeltacht whom they will play on Wednesday at 7 in An Ghaeltacht pitch. All support much needed and appreciated.

Minors:
Hard luck to our minor team who were defeated by Glenbeigh Glencar Cromane on Friday evening last in the semi final of the minor league.

Having beaten them by two points on Tuesday evening, it was the visitors who set the pace on Friday night with a blistering start.  A huge well done to the panel and management for getting so far- despite being without some key players due to injury.

Seniors:

The Milltown Castlemaine senior men were at home on Sunday afternoon to Cromane in a back game of the senior league.

Conditions were excellent for the game. MC were without a number of players due to injury.

Both sides were guilty of errors in the opening minutes but Cromane was first to register a score with a point from Damien Houlihan. It was a further six minutes before the next score-a point from Donnachda Walsh.

MC eventually got on the score board in the 15TH minute with a point from Gavin Horan. Darren Houlihan replied with a pointed free in the 18th, MC cancelled that out but Patrick O’ Sullivan quickly added another point for Cromane, leaving a score line of 4 pts to 2 pts after 20 minutes of play.

Milltown Castlemaine introduced Brian O’ Sullivan to goals replacing Cormac Leane.

In the 22nd minute, the Cromane keeper stood no chance with a shot from Jeremiah Hayes – after receiving a clever pass from Shane Murphy. This goal gave MC the narrowest of leads.

MC seemed to play well for the remainder of the first half adding 4 more points by way of a pointed free from Jack McCarthy, 1 point from Kieran Griffin and 2 from their mid fielder Pa Wrenn. Score at half time was 1:06 to 0:06 in favour of MC.

The second half saw a treble substitution for MC with Seamus Dowd, Jerome Flynn and Kieran Griffin making way for Derek Twiss, John Blennerhassett and Thady O’ Sullivan.

MC began the second half with a pointed free from substitute Derek Twiss in the 3rd minute.

Craig Counihan pointed another quickly afterwards. Cromane were awarded a free which was duly pointed to give a score line of 1/08 to 5 points after 5 minutes of the second half.

A foul on the MC substitute Thady O’ Sullivan resulted in a free which was popped over by Jack McCarthy in the 6th minute.

There was a lot of errant shooting by both sides but MC’s young minor Tadgh McCarthy kicked over a delightful point to give MC an 8 point lead. Cromane were unfortunate to have their wing forward black carded in the 9thminute.

Following this, MC introduced a further sub with Jeremiah Hayes making space for Michael Dennehy.

The 11th minute of the 2nd half saw MC’S Gavin Horan receiving a black card. MC had used their all of their subs and so played the remainder of the game with 14 players. Cromane benefitted from this and added 5 unanswered points.

They were unfortunate not to add a goal during this period of play. In the 19th minute, Jack McCarthy set up Derek Twiss for the second goal of the game which gave MC a lead of 6 points, 2/10 to 0/10.

Cromane added a pointed free from their No. 9 in the 23RD minute and Jack McCarthy added a point immediately after.

Both sides went through another period of errant passing and shooting. The last few minutes saw Derek Twiss add 2 more points for MC(1from a free) whilst Cromane added a consolation point before the final whistle to give a full time score of MC:2/13,Cromane:0/12.

Well done to both teams for a very sporting game and to the referee who acquitted himself very well.

50 year celebrations:

Coiste Na nÓg Chiarrai are celebrating 50 years of Juvenile activity in both Football and Hurling in 2017 and as part of the celebrations they are compiling a history to acknowledge this. They are appealing to all clubs to supply photographs of teams and administrators over the period. All the material supplied will be acknowledged and scanned and returned to the owners. Intermediate Championship:
Milltown/Castlemaine 0-10, Laune Rangers 1-13

Laune Rangers delivered a fantastic performance in Paddy Burke Memorial Park on Easter Sunday to defeat rivals Milltown/Castlemaine in Round 1 of the County Intermediate Championship. Laune Rangers were bolstered by the return of Peter Crowley, making his first appearance of 2017 in the royal blue.

Laune Rangers took an early lead as Jack O’Connor pointed his side ahead on their first attack, and Colm O’Shea kicked a super point from distance soon after. The visitors continued to press on for the remainder of the early stages with O’Shea (2 frees) & Connor Clarke (2) adding to Rangers tally with excellent scores, as two Cathal Moriarty frees provided the response for the hosts leaving Laune Rangers leading by 0-6 to 0-2 with a quarter played.

Cathal Moriarty pointed another free for the home side, before Laune Rangers scored four unanswered points to increase their lead – Shane McSweeney & John Sheehan deciding against goal attempts to take good points while Colm O’Shea (free) and Connor Clarke added to their individual tallies with excellent scores from distance.

Laune Rangers had a goal disallowed in injury time as David Costelloe’s hand was adjudged to have made contact with the ball on the ground before he tapped it into the net.

This gave the hosts some impetus and they tagged on two points later in injury time through David Roche and Jonathan O’Sullivan – Roche’s effort the sole score from play the home side could muster in the opening half as Rangers defence dominated. Milltown had one chance on goal in the half but Tony Lyons gave Cathal Moriarty no sight at goal from an acute angle and saved a bullet of a shot with help from Ronan Sayers. Half Time Score:- Milltown/Castlemaine 0-5, Laune Rangers 0-10.

Milltown/Castlemaine introduced Mike Burke & Donal Kelliher at Half Time in an effort to nullify John Sheehan & Shane McSweeney’s dominance at midfield. Rangers introduced Kerry Minor player Fiachra Clifford for his Senior debut at the interval also.

Laune Rangers got the perfect start to the half as Colm O’Shea dropped the ball into the edge of the square to Connor Clarke, breaking the ball to John Tyther who finished to the net for a goal. Clarke followed this up with his fourth point of the game to put Rangers nine ahead.

Colm O’Shea & Jonathan O’Sullivan traded frees before O’Sullivan & Moriarty added two more frees for the hosts to leave Laune Rangers leading by 1-12 to 0-8 with a quarter to play – the first O’Shea free coming from a foul on Kieran Crowley who was hauled down after a great run up from the back.

Laune Rangers closed up shop for the final quarter, with a mammoth defensive effort put in by all, including a superb performance at midfield from John Sheehan against his career-long rival Mike Burke. No further score would come until the 57th minute, and then it was Laune Rangers corner forward David Costelloe who pointed from an acute angle for a well deserved score for his efforts.

Cathal Moriarty added a free for Milltown/Castlemaine before Pa Wrenn scored his side’s final point – only their second from play in the game. After seven additional minutes at the end of the second half, the final whistle was blown to see Laune Rangers progress to the Quarter Final of the Intermediate Championship.

Full Time Score:- Milltown/Castlemaine 0-10, Laune Rangers 1-13.

Senior League: Division 1:

Our seniors were away to Rahilly’s on Saturday last.

Both Milltown Castlemaine and Kerins O’ Rahilly’s lined out without a number of regulars but still served up a highly competitive affair -with never more than a couple of points separating the teams. Rahilly’s went in up a point at half time on a score of 8pts to 7pts.

The second half resumed with an exchange of points that saw Milltown Castlemaine take the lead before an opportunistic goal by Rahilly’s saw them take the lead by 2. Milltown Castlemaine fought back to earn a deserved point after two Kerins O’ Rahilly’s players   saw red in their efforts to keep Milltown Castlemaine at bay.

David Roche and Pa Wrenn at midfield were outstanding despite conceding height difference to their opponents and defensively Stephen Roche and Nigel Wrenn led from the front. Top scorers on the day were Jonathon O’Sullivan, Cathal Moriarty with Pa Wrenn and Jerome Flynn also contributing.

Seniors

County League: Milltown Castlemaine 2:12  Kerins O’ Rahilly’s 2:12

Despite both teams lining out without a number of regulars, this turned out a lively entertaining affair with both sets of players giving it their all. Rahilly’s were quickest out of the traps with two early points through Gearóid Savage and Tommy Walsh who was having a great tussle with Milltown Castlemaine’s Dónal Kelliher.  Dónal was deputising at full back for the absent Damian Murphy.

By the quarter hour mark, Milltown Castlemaine had pegged it back and gone into a 4 points to 3 lead. Then Kerins O’ Rahilly’s struck for a goal -after a sweet pass from corner forward John Ferguson found Eoin Carroll who then crashed the ball to the roof of the net -despite the tight angle.

This gave them a 1:04 to :04 lead. A couple of Cathal Moriarty frees kept Milltown Castlemaine in touch but the pendulum swung in Kerins O’ Rahilly’s favour when Donal Kelliher had to leave the field due to a hamstring injury and Tommy Walsh proceeded to have a purple patch, scoring one point and playing in the inform Ferguson for their second goal and his sixth in four games.

Unfortunately this was his last major contribution to the game as he was unable to resume for the second half. Rahilly’s went in at the break with a comfortable 2:06 to :07 lead.

The introduction of a number of the youngsters for MC (all U21) in the second half namely Donal Dennehy, Ciarán O’ Connor and Tadhg McCarthy along with the first half substitution of Gavin McKenna for the unlucky Kelliher, seemed to energize the Milltown Castlemaine side.

With points from Cathal Moriarty(2), Shane Murphy and Ciarán O’ Connor, along with a peach of a goal from David Roche set up by the fleet footed Eoin O’ Brien( two more of the U21 brigade) they played themselves right back into the game.
Rahilly’s rallied with a couple of points and looked to be in for a goal to kill the game off when Tadgh McCarthy got back to clear the lines and start a move that finished with the ball in   Rahilly’s net – courtesy of Ciarán O’ Connor. The Strand Road men weren’t finished yet and regained the lead again by 1.

Milltown Castlemaine finished strongly and levelled the match 2:12 to 2:12 despite having what looked a perfectly good point ruled wide by the umpire earlier.
Spoils shared by two teams fielding a number of youngsters who didn’t seem out of their depth in the top tier especially Ciarán O’ Connor who came in to score 1:01 on his debut.

Well done to Mike Hickey, Mike Carroll, Timmy Teahan and the entire panel of players. A great team effort.
Next outing for our seniors is on August 14 th when they are away to Castleisland Desmonds.

Ciara O’ Brien from Laune Rangers will captain the team.

Laune Rangers are hosting a Welcome Evening for the Kerry U16 Girls on Thursday, 28th of July.

Win, lose or draw -Laune Rangers hope to go ahead with this event to honour the achievements of the Kerry U16 girls in 2016.
It is hoped that the girls will gather at The Fishery and will be led up the town by the Killorglin Pipe Band-meeting at Library Place @ 8pm for introductions of the team & mentors.

Senior County League:
A pointed free in injury time secured Milltown Castlemaine’s position in Division 1 of the the County League for 2017. MC lined out without some of their regular team who were absent due to injury or other commitments. Equally their opponents Legion were without their county players -so the playing pitch was relatively level from the start.

Legion were first out of the the blocks with a pointed free from their number 7- Alan Moriarty in the 3rd minute. This was quickly followed by another point from their half forward- Billy  McGuire.

MC replied with a point from Cathal Moriarty in the 6 th minute.
Cathal O’ Connor who started in place of Alan Looney, picked up from the kick out and placed a clever ball to Jeremiah Hayes who pointed off the left boot- leaving the sides level at two points each -after seven  minutes of play.

Legion replied immediately with a point from Jamie O’ Sullivan and MC levelled matters again when Brendan Delaney set up a move with Shane Murphy who was then fouled.Cathal Moriarty slotted it between the posts.

Both sides were guilty of many errors and turnovers -with MC losing out on two certain goal opportunities  in the 15th and 16th minute, despite the tremendous efforts of  Dónal Kelliher and Gavin Horan.

Legion were next to register a score by the way of 2 points( 1 from play and 1 from a free) from David O’ Sullivan. MC’s goal scorer from last week’s game was unlucky to slot a point wide of the posts in the 24 th minute but the team continued to graft hard with David Roche, Mike Burke, Eoin O’ Brien and Eoin O’ Mahony playing some great football. Alas nothing was converted to a score.

Legion had a chance of a score from a free just before half time but that went wide. The sides went in at the short whistle with Legion having a three point advantage .

Legion: six points, MC: three points.
MC started the second half with great vigour and determination with the young Eoin O’ Brien -continuing his impressive first half performance, slotting over a classy point off his left leg.

Legion had a chance of a score from a free -but David O’Sullivan sent it wide. MC’s free taker – Cathal Moriarty was in super form and split the posts with two pointed frees to level matters at six points all-after seven minutes of the second half.

Some terrific defence by Damian Murphy, Paul Carroll and the Roche brothers kept the Legion forwards at bay. Legion introduced Mike O’ Sullivan and Thomas Moriarty to boost their team but it was Cathal Moriarty who was next to score from a place kick -for a foul on David Roche.

Legion’sub-Thomas Moriarty levelled matters once again with a great point from play- quickly followed by another superb point from Legion’s Jamie O’ Sullivan. A pointed free from Cathal Moriarty levelled matters once again for the fourth time -at eight points all.

Jeramiah Hayes made way for Pa Wrenn – as MC attempted to try and secure their Division One status.

Heading into the last five minutes and the teams level – excitement and tension was building, with neither side wanting to concede a score. However MC were awarded a free for a foul on Paul Carroll.

Cathal Moriarty stepped up but it dropped short and a goal was on -which would surely seal the day for MC. A point from Gavin Horan was the final outcome. Score now MC- 9 points , Legion -8 points and just 3 minutes left.

A free to Legion was converted by Shaun Keane and matters were level once again in the 29 th minute. Would there be another score in either team? Would it be Legion or MC for relegation ?

In injury now , MC’s Shane Murphy was awarded a free  for a foul by Damien O’ Sullivan. Cathal Moriarty kept his nerve and made no mistake -as he pointed to give MC a one point victory.

Final score: MC – 10 points, Legion-9 points.
Well done to the MC panel and to Mike Hickey and his management team. Commiserations to Legion who fought right to the end.
