Night Of Programmes Dedicated To Miriam Murphy On Lyric FM

RTÉ lyric fm will celebrate the life of Tralee soprano Miriam Murphy with two special programmes  tonight (Saturday).

Miriam Murphy passed away in July and tributes poured in from all over the music world for the talented Tralee woman who brought so much joy to people with her extraordinary voice.

On Saturday, August 1 on RTE lyric fm, from 7pm to 10.45pm,  there will be an Opera Night with Lyric FM broadcaster, Paul Herriott dedicated to Miriam’s memory.

This will feature a Wide Open Opera production of Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde starring Miriam Murphy as Isolde and featuring the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Fergus Sheil. Listen live or listen back www.rte.ie/lyricfm/opera-night

RTE Lyric FM To Dedicate Night Of Programmes To Late Miriam Murphy

RTÉ lyric fm will celebrate the life of Tralee soprano Miriam Murphy with two special programmes during the August Bank Holiday.

Miriam Murphy passed away last Friday and left her family, the opera community and the people of Tralee and beyond, shocked at the loss of such a wonderful person and talent.

Lyric FM broadcaster, Paul Herriott said; “So many wonderful memories of Miriam Murphy but we got to know her rather more personally over the years through The Lyric Concert. One of the most striking, a performance of the Wesendonck Lieder with the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Matthias Bamert as part of an evening devoted to Wagner, music to which she was so perfectly suited.

Inspired, professional and brilliant, Miriam was a pleasure to work with. She was the first Irish soprano to sing the role of Isolde and that Wide Open Opera production of ‘Tristan and Isolde’ conducted by Fergus Sheil and featuring the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra will be broadcast on Opera Night on Saturday 1st August at 7pm. Death Of Renowned Tralee Soprano Miriam Murphy

THE death has taken place yesterday of renowned soprano Miriam Murphy.

Tralee native Ms Murphy passed away in London, where she was based. As a child she began singing in choirs in town and attended the Kerry School of Music.

She was also taught by Veronica Dunne in Dublin before travelling to London in 1995 to further her studies.

She went on to have a stellar career in the opera world singing roles at some of the world’s top opera houses. She sang with the Opéra national de Paris, Glyndebourne Festival Opera, Seattle Opera, Wexford Festival Opera, Welsh National Opera, Opera North, ABAO Bilbao Opera and Opéra de Lille among others.

A post on the Kerry School of Music facebook page this morning reads; “Deeply shocked and overwhelmed with sadness to learn of the sudden death yesterday afternoon of outstanding Kerry School alumna and life-long friend Miriam Murphy. Miriam’s association with KSM goes back more than nearly forty years when she was first encouraged to take singing lessons at the school. The rest, as is said, is history. Our deepest sympathy to her mother Marie, brother John, aunts and extended family. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.”

‘Oh Holy Night’ To Kick Off Christmas For Many In St John’s

A CHRISTMAS treat not to be missed is the ‘O Holy Night’ choral concert on in St John’s The Baptist Church, this Sunday at 7:30pm.

The concert is eagerly anticipated each year and attracts up to 600 people.

Performing on the night will be soloist, Miriam Murphy, and The Kerry Choral Union who will be accompanied by their junior choir.

Miriam Murphy from Tralee, is one of the foremost sopranos in the country. Trained at the Royal Academy of Music in London, she has performed at the Royal Albert Hall and won awards across Europe for her singing talent.

“For a lot of people, the singing of ‘Oh Holy Night’ by Miriam Murphy marks the start of the Christmas season,” said Chairman of The Kerry Choral Union, Bill Corcoran.

This is Kerry Choral Union’s biggest event of the year and for a considerable number of years has been held in St John’s on Castle Street. Primarily, the concert will consist of Christmas carols.

“There has been a very good response from previous years and we will be expecting a huge crowd again next year,” said Bill.

World Renowned Tralee Soprano For Home Recital On Saturday

LONDON-BASED Tralee born International Soprano Miriam Murphy returns to her alma mater, Kerry School of Music tomorrow (Saturday) to give an intimate song recital accompanied by school Director Aidan O’ Carroll.

The 7.30pm performance will kick off the Fleischmann Studio’s Autumn recital series. Miriam, who has sung at Covent Garden and at opera houses throughout Europe and was winner of the World Wagner Prize, scored a major triumph in the Board Gáis Energy Theatre in 2013 for her portrayal of Isolde in Wide Open Opera’s production of Richard Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde.

Miriam is believed to be the first Irish soprano ever to sing this Olympian role. She has since been much in demand in Ireland with RTE, at the National Concert Hall and at venues throughout the country.

While in Tralee, Miriam will coach some very talented up and coming student singers of the Kerry School of Music Voice Department at High Street. Miriam’s programme will include songs by Schubert, Greig, Verdi, Moore, Balfe and Jerome Kern. Tickets at €15/€10 can be booked from 066 7120077.
