THE children at Moyderwell Primary School enjoyed a wonderful week of dressing up and delivering entertainment at the annual Christmas concert.
The past few weeks have seen the pupils practising songs and their acting skills while also making parts of their costumes for the three days of performances from different classes.
There were pirates, penguins, polar bears, mermaids, snowmen and more characters taking to the stage creating wonderful memories for parents who filled the school hall on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Scroll down for photos…
SEAN Kelly MEP along with Jim Mullen, Executive Director of Léargas visited Moyderwell Mercy Primary School on Friday to celebrate their inaugural Erasmus+ flag.
The was in recognition of the school’s participation in an Erasmus+ project exploring the teaching of English as a second language.
Funded by the EU, a large number of teachers from the school have undertaken training courses and job shadowing assignments in other European countries during school holidays, to further develop skills and competence in the teaching of English to a diverse student population.

The aim of Erasmus+ is to contribute to the Europe 2020 strategy for growth, jobs, social equity and inclusion, as well as the aims of ET2020, the EU’s strategic framework for education and training.
The students at Moyderwell have also been very involved in the promotion of cultural integration and inclusion through their participation in eTwinning projects with students in both Sweden and the UK.
Teachers are already planning for projects with new partners in countries across the EU for the coming school year.
IF you’ve been passing by the Moyderwell area in the past number of weeks you might have noticed a bit of work going on.
Kerry County Council has been giving the parking area across from Tralee Library a bit of a facelift to make it look more attractive. It’s worked.
The old area was just a footpath to the fore next to the road and parking spaces right up to the wall, with a lot of area underutilised.

Now there is a much better use of the space. A tarmacadam footpath divides the space between the wall and parking spaces with grass margins between.
There is also new trees set in the area and three very smart looking benches. It’s all part of making the Mitchels/Moyderwell area look better and it’s a job well done. Scroll down for photos…
IT’S been 25 years since the Class of 1991 graduated from Moyderwell Secondary School, so there was a lot to catch up on at No.4 On The Square on Tuesday night.
Around 30 people attended the reunion at the bar/restaurant where a couple of teachers – Marie O’Connor and Mike Culloty – and the Principal at the time, Sr Bernadette, also shared memories of that period.
The call went out to former students in September and it was a hugely enjoyable night for those present to reflect on their schooldays. Scroll down for photos…
THERE were laughs and no small amount of great memories recalled at a reunion in Cassidy’s Restaurant on Monday night.
Over 20 girls from the Moyderwell Secondary School ‘Class of 1985’ met up again to share stories, catch up on how their lives and careers have developed and talk about boys no doubt (we know what you girls are like!).

Martina Ryan Murphy was one of the ladies behind the night.
“Many of us had been together since babies in primary school, some then came in from the country schools so we all ended up in ‘Eoin’ or ‘Mhuire’ – they were the two classes,” Martina told us when we called in at the start of the night.
“So we decided to have a 30th reunion. I was here one night with Geraldine McElligott – who owns Cassidy’s here – and Delia Daly and we said ‘why don’t we organise a get-together?’ That was about a month ago and there’s been texts and Facebook messages since. We got a fantastic response. Most of the girls here are from Tralee. There’s one girl here I haven’t seen since we finished 30 years ago and I didn’t recognise her when I saw her,” said Martina.
“Two of our girls here tonight are now the Principal and Vice-Principal of Presentation Secondary School – Mary O’Keeffe and Chrissie Kelly (nee Lee). Moyderwell secondary is gone but there’s a great love for the school. I’m the fifth generation of my family that went to the school,” said Martina.
It was a great night of fun, laughter and stories and no doubt plans were made to repeat the night for a 40th.

THERE were excited little faces all around Moyderwell Primary School on Friday morning as pupils prepared to take to the stage for the annual Christmas concert.
“A lot of preparation went into today,” said Principal Moira Quinlan. “It’s a small enough concert, with just three groups taking part; the ‘Colour My Strings’ violin group; the Junior Infants and the Little House Montessori which is our pre-school on-site.”

“It’s a short concert but the combination of the three groups is magnificent. Some of the children in the ‘Colour My Strings’ group, under the tuition of Lucy Tanner and co-ordinated by Deputy Principal Maura Jones, have been playing for three years so they are in a position to put on a little orchestra onstage, so it’s wonderful to see their progression,” added Ms Quinlan.
The children were dressed up as elves, little Santas, angels and shepherds as they took to the stage in front of a packed hall of parents and grandparents and dazzled them with their wonderful performances.
MOYDERWELL primary school was a hive of activity on Wednesday morning with pupils, teachers and parents helping out for the school’s annual Christmas craft fair.
The craft fair, where children sell the items they made themselves, is a fundraiser with all proceeds going to the school.

“The day brings a lot of colour to the school and gets people ready for the festive season,” said Moira Quinlan, school principal.
As well as the arts and crafts, a cafe was set up selling teas, coffees and hot chocolate – which was the favourite of the day – plus homemade cakes and buns that the children and parents brought in.
