SECRET Screening makes a return visit this Bank Holiday Monday, October 30, to Tralee Omniplex and a scare awaits.

While the mystery around the film will only last until the opening credits start to roll, movie goers will be gripping that popcorn a little more tightly for the duration as this event will be a psychological horror, promising some tense and disturbing scenes as the plot unfolds.

With tickets in demand and selling fast, film fans are reminded to book early as there is limited Secret Screenings ticket availability.

It will take place on Bank Holiday Monday October 30th at 6.45pm. Tickets are priced at €10 each and include a medium popcorn and drink.

Council Defends Issuing Of Parking Tickets Outside Cinema Last Night

THERE was anger expressed by customers of the Tralee Omniplex, after they were issued with tickets by Kerry County Council last night for parking on the Dan Spring Road.

Tuesday night is one of the most popular nights to go to the cinema because it only costs €5 for admission.

The cinema had a sign up telling patrons that the car park was full well before 9pm, so many parked outside on the side of the road.

When they came out after watching the movie, most people who parked there found they had parking tickets waiting for them and are now facing a €40 fine. It’s estimated between 30 to 40 cars received tickets.

There was a furious reaction online with people saying it was  “underhand” and “bad form”, while others said proper notice was not given to motorists either through signage or through the local media that the Council were clamping down on the parking.

County Council signs had been erected earlier that day telling motorists that parking was prohibited on the Dan Spring Road and that fines would be imposed, but some people said the signs were facing out onto the road, towards Castlecountess, rather than towards oncoming traffic and that there were none between the cinema and aqua dome.

The following statement in relation to the matter was issued by Kerry County Council this morning:

“A number of weeks ago, the Kerry County Council Tralee Municipal District Operations office received a number of complaints in relation to illegal parking on the footpaths of the N86 Dan Spring Road. The matter was investigated and found to be related to the special offer advertised by the Omniplex cinema on Tuesdays.

The Area Engineer visited the location on a number of Tuesday evenings and noted that cars were parked on both sides of the N86 Dan Spring Road, making sections of footpath inaccessible to buggies/wheelchairs and also blocking the cycle lane.

Additionally, it was noted that two way traffic was barely manageable due to parking on both sides of the road and concern was raised regarding the accessibility for Emergency vehicles. It was also noted that when the cinema car park was full, there was nothing to indicate that fact, and patrons were still entering the car park while it was full, leading to traffic jams on the main N86 Dan Spring Road close to the cinema entrance.

The management of Tralee Omniplex was contacted regarding the illegal parking by cinema patrons and a meeting took place between the Regional Manager of the Omniplex and the Area Engineer at the cinema location two weeks ago.

It was agreed that the Omniplex would erect signs:

(a) to inform patrons when the car park is full

(b) to advise patrons to use the nearby Brandon Car Park as an alternative

These signs were duly put in place on Tuesday, October 11 by the Omniplex cinema management.

As an additional measure Kerry County Council Tralee Municipal District Operations erected  signs, on Tuesday, October 18, adjacent to the Omniplex:

“No Parking on footpaths – Fines will be issued”

These signs were clearly visible to cinema patrons.

As an enforcement measure, Traffic Wardens were deployed in the area last night and a number of parking fines were issued. The situation will be monitored going forward in the interests of public safety.”

THE OMNIPLEX cinema is to provide weekly screenings for the deaf and hard of hearing along with providing sensory shows for children with autism.

22 different cinemas across Ireland including Tralee will tonight show ‘Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation’ with subtitles.

We have received a number of requests from customers for subtitled films and been keen to cater for this demand for some time,” said Operations Director Omniplex Cinemas Mark Anderson.

Children will begin to get a chance to avail of the new initiative next week when, Pixar’s ‘Inside Out’ is shown to matinee audiences. These screenings will be both subtitled and sensory.

“We believe very strongly that cinema should be accessible for all and anyone with a disability should be able to see a newly released movie, with as much freedom as possible.” he said.

CINEMAGOERS at the Omniplex had their evening interrupted last night when they had to be evacuated due to suspected gas leak at the Aquadome.

Two units of Tralee Fire Brigade were called to the scene just after 9pm to Dan Spring Road where there were reports of a strong smell of gas.

Will Small Benners And Kelliher’s Hardware Get A Boost From ‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’?

TRALEE is set to go ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ crazy this weekend as the Omniplex are reporting heavy pre-booking sales for the movie which opens on Friday.

Speaking to a member of staff at the Tralee Omniplex, we were told tickets are selling really well, especially for the evening screenings of the movie which is adapted from the multi-million selling book.

The raunchy tome was a phenomenal hit in bookstores, so the film adaptation has whipped up a lot of hype just days now before it opens to cinema audiences.

During the week it was reported that the B&Q DIY store giant had issued a memo to its UK staff to be prepared for a barrage of requests for duct tape, cable ties and rope because of a scene in the movie featuring stars Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson (see scene below).

Is there a chance now, that Small Benners and Kelliher’s Hardware could be sold out of rope by Monday?

Cinema Group Confirms Upgrade Is On The Way To Tralee…Just No Date Yet

THE Omniplex Cinemas group are set top upgrade their cinema in Tralee soon.

The upgrade will bring the ‘OmniplexMaxx’ experience where cinema goers in town can expect an improvement in the sound and visuals for their night (or day) at the movies.

No fixed date has been set yet, but we can expect it to happen sometime after March as this tweet (below) confirms.

The OmniplexMAXX screen measures 15 metres in ‘Flat’ ratio or over 20 metres in ‘Scope’ ratio. They curve the screen by 5% for optimum ’light gain’ and to achieve a more even spread of light.

The sound is also vastly improved for OmniplexMaxx screenings.

The bad news is, according to the information on OmniplexMax on their website here, is that there is a surcharge on screenings.

Oh well. Let’s hope it’s worth it!

Cinema Closed Until Next Week…But An OmniplexMAXX May Be On The Way

omniplexMOVIE-LOVERS will have to do with DVDs or downloads for the next number of days as the Omniplex Cinema on Dan Spring Road is closed to allow for an upgrade.

A new high definition digital projection is to be installed in each of the cinema’s screens.

The good news is there are longterm plans to install the OmniplexMAXX – a 23 metre wide screen – which would make it one of the biggest in Ireland.

How To Train Your Dragon 2

By John Lyons

rsz_dragon_1If I had to sit down and make a list of my five favourite animated films right this second, ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ would definitely be on that list.

Dreamworks really outdid themselves in 2010 with a breathtaking adaptation of Cressida Cowell’s book series about a young, meek viking who befriends a wounded dragon.

The premise might sound a bit odd, but the film is a solid 10/10. It’s Dreamworks finest animated film yet. I would even go as far to say that it’s very close to being a perfect film.

‘How to Train Your Dragon’ is not a film that I would’ve imagined to have a sequel in the works, but ,in fact, it was the first instalment of a planned trilogy. The second act of the trilogy, ‘How to Train your Dragon 2’, has just arrived in cinemas.

It has a lot to live up to, and for fans of the first film, the question on all our minds is can Dreamworks deliver again?

It’s been four years since the first film and interestingly all the characters have aged by four years as well. Protagonist Hiccup (voiced by Jay Baruchel) and his friends are all entering young adulthood and trying to find their place in the world.

The film continues the story of Hiccup and his pet dragon, Toothless, as they set out to discover and chart unexplored territories.

After the pair have a close encounter with a group of dragon-trappers, Hiccup and Toothless happen upon a mysterious dragon rider, who leads them to a hidden ice cave filled with thousands of dragons.

Hiccup soon finds himself in the middle of a war being waged on the dragons by the dragon-trappers leader – Draco Bludvist (voiced by Djimon Hounsou).

Even though the film is epic in scope, what makes ‘How to Train Your Dragon 2’ special is that rather than trying to dazzle us with spectacle, the filmmakers instead focus on the complex, intimate relationships between the main characters.

The core of the film centers on Hiccup’s family ties and accepting his responsibility to protect his loved ones at all costs.

Despite the fact that it’s very much a family-friendly film, ‘How to Train Your Dragon 2’ isn’t afraid to deal with dark subject matters that most other animated films would normally shy away from.

The characters in the film go through some traumatic experiences and learn some harsh truths, not the least of which is that not all conflicts can be solved peacefully.

I think that bold creative decisions like these are what really elevates the film to greatness.

‘How to Train Your Dragon 2’ may not have surpassed the first film, but it’s still by all means a worthy successor. And with the sole exception of ‘The Lego Movie’, ‘How to Train Your Dragon 2’ is the strongest animated film I’ve had the pleasure of watching this year.

8/10

At The Omniplex: Two Great Doses Of Laughter And Romance

Danielle Courtney on the pick of the movies at the Omniplex this week.

mrs_brownMrs Brown’s Boys D’Movie

Ignore the critics, if you’re a fan of the show, you have to go and will laugh hysterically for the entire show. If however you’re not a fan of the BBC show or his standup legacy, the film may not be for you.

It feels like an episode that lasts for two hours and stays true to Brendan O’Carroll’s wicked sense of humour.

The film starts with as an ordinary day for Mrs. Brown, opening her vegetable stall in Moore Street when she receives a notice that her grandmother’s failure to pay a tax has accumulated to €4m.

The audience quickly learns that a crooked councillor and property developer are behind the scheme to change the market into a shopping centre. Agnes and family thus embark on a mission to save her stall, with a rake of comedic capers that are so distinctly Irish you can’t help but laugh along, as well as cameos from Joe Duffy to Simon Delaney.

More than anything, it’s an ode to Dublin, the photography showcasing the modern Ireland alongside its history, ending with a speech by Mrs. Brown in defence of Dublin’s uniqueness.

D’Movie reminds us of who we are and why that’s so special and unique, whilst ensuring we laugh at ourselves as we do it.

The Fault In Our Stars

the-fault-in-our-stars-movie-wallpaper-5The Fault In Our Stars is better than the Notebook. There I said it. If you need more incentive to go see the faithful adaptation of John Green’s best selling novel, here it is.

A troupe of current YA movies centre on girls with terminal cancer, from Dakota Fanning in ‘Now Is Good’ to the soon to be released ‘Before I Die’ with Chloe Moretz, these films all follow female protagonists coping with the disease.

TFIOS (as its effectually known) is instead about love. When Hazel Grace Lancaster is sent to a support group for kids with cancer, she befriends Augustus Waters who changes her outlook on life.

Whilst illness affects the plot, the film focuses on their burgeoning relationship and the transformative way it changes her. The film avoids so many rom-com cliches, instead having an original and heart wrenching approach to love.

Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort had just worked together on the first ‘Divergent’ film, and have a chemistry that is effortless and believable. The soundtrack is also incredible, featuring Kodaline amongst others, and will be sure to pull those extra tears.

It’s not a weepy movie, but that allows for some unforeseeable tearjerker moments. This is the film everyone has been talking about, so make sure not to miss it before it leaves movie theatres.
