THE Square in Tralee was the setting for a rally on Saturday to show solidarity with the people of Palestine.

There was a good turnout in the sunshine for the event, which was organised by John Loughrey of the Kerry branch of the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign.

Kerry Sinn Féin TD Pa Daly attended, as did his party colleague Cllr Deirdre Ferris and her father, former TD Martin Ferris among many others.

Pa Daly said it important to show support, particularly since Tralee is twinned with a town in the West Bank, Beit Sahour.

“It’s particularly relevant 100 years on from Gortaglanna commemorated last week [when three IRA men were executed by the Black and Tans], where the false narrative was put out by the Black and Tans that they were ambushed, that we are now countering the narrative that each side is as bad as the other.

“In reality there are UN resolutions that say the change of the status of Jerusalem is wrong, the evictions are illegal, the new settlements are illegal and the narrative that the Israelis are acting in self-defence when they’re bombing buildings and killing scores of people, is clearly wrong,” he said.

“People ask what good will this do, but if the people in our twin town see the rally, they’ll appreciate it. The Irish Government can do two things: they can implement the Occupied Territories Bill and they can recognise the State of Palestine and send an ambassador over there,” added Deputy Daly.

John Loughrey thanked everyone for turning up on the day. He said he had a mixture of sadness and anger with what has been going on.

“The only way I can describe it is that it’s Cromwell in the modern era —plantation and settler colonialism and the international community allows it to happen,” he said.

“The only way things are going to change is if we can create a critical mass among the population that says this is not acceptable, this is wrong and should not be happening,” he added.

Mr Loughrey encouraged people who see Israeli products in shops to take them to to the counter and ask the owner to stop stocking the goods.

Dr Uzair Shabbir of the Kerry Islamic Society also spoke to the crowd and said “humanity takes precedence over ethnicity, religion, nationality and every other creed and sectarianism. We must all come together.” Scroll down for photos…

A GATHERING is to take place in Tralee on Saturday in solidarity with the people of Palestine.

People are asked to gather at The Square from 1.30pm until 2.30pm, to wear a mask and to adhere to social distancing rules at all times in groups no bigger than six.

Members of Kerry Sinn Féin gathered at the Square last Saturday in protest at the treatment of Palestinians and to mark Nakba Day, when Palestinians were displaced after the State of Israel was established in 1948.

Sinn Féin Kerry TD Pa Daly is asking people to show up on Saturday to show solidarity with Palestine and Tralee’s twin town, Beit Sahour, which is near Bethlehem.

Council To Welcome Twinning Delegation From Palestinian Town On Monday

A MEMORANDUM of Understanding to develop a twinning relationship between Tralee and Beit Sahour, Palestine will be signed by the Mayor of Tralee, Cllr Graham Spring and the Mayor of Beit Sahour, Jihad Khair, during a ceremony in the Council Chamber at County Buildings on Monday.

The event will also be attended by the Ambassador of the State of Palestine in Ireland, Mr Ahmad Abdelrazek.

Cllr Pa Daly brought forward a motion at the Tralee Municipal District meeting in June of last year that the District formalise a twinning with the town situated near Bethlehem in Palestine.

Beit Sahour is as town of similar size to Tralee. The population is 80% Christian and 20% Muslim and is near the Shepherd’s Field of Bethlehem.

Later on Monday evening, an event hosted by Sinn Féin will be held at Kerins O’Rahillys GAA club where the public will have  a chance to hear what life is like in a Palestinian town from the Mayor of Beit Sahour and his delegation. That event begins at 7.30pm and all are invited.

10014671_541441202637671_738221775_nTHE Kerry Islamic Outreach Society (KIOS) have expressed their delight at the generosity of the people of Tralee to their recent children’s clothes campaign.

On Saturday we reported that the KIOS were running a charity campaign to help collect clothes for children in Syria and Palestine.

The collection was part of a drive that will send clothes to children in the countries who are suffering through an extreme winter.

Well the campaign has been a tremendous success and the amount of clothes that have been donated and collected has double on last year.

Rizwan Khan, Chairman of the KIOS and an organizer behind the campaign said he was delighted and shocked by the numbers of donations.

He informed us that over 100 bags of clothes had been donated this year, a figure that is double what they received last year.

If this doesn’t sound like a lot, take a look at the photos and see for yourself!

Donations closed for the KIOS on Saturday 14 but people can donate directly to Human Appeal Ireland if they want.

Another donation campaign for clothes is possibly expected to start up again in March.

KERRY Islamic Outreach Society (KIOS) here in town is looking for any donations of children’s clothes.

The collection is part of a drive that will send clothes to children in both Syria and Palestine who are suffering through an extreme winter.

We talked to Rizwan Khan, who as well as being an organizer of the collection campaign, is also Chairman of the KIOS.

He told us about the campaign and what conditions are like for those who are suffering in Syria and Palestine.

“We, as part of the Kerry Islamic Outreach Society, are collecting clothes for the children for a Syria refugee camp and in Palestine. There is an organisation in Dublin called Human Appeal Ireland who are the main people responsible. They have their main charity shop in Dundrum Shopping Centre.”

“They have their established offices in three areas near the Turkish border, Lebanese border and the Jordan border. They regularly go there to distribute food products such as flour and wheat, they also bring in clothes as well.”

“This winter [in Syria and Palestine] there was a very harsh winter. Children have died already because of the hypothermia and the lack of items, especially clothing. We decided to provide the clothes as part of of the humanitarian campaign.”

“It’s -7 and -8C  with all the snow. The tents are not warm, they are not climatically customized for this weather,” said Rizwan.

While they are very welcoming and thankful of all the generosity and kindness that Tralee and Kerry have shown with their donations, they are only looking for children’s clothes at the moment and are not looking for monetary donations of any kind.

“It’s all revolving around the children and the family at this moment. Children and infants are the most vulnerable, they cannot get any sort of temperature stability. They are dying in these very harsh climates. Unfortunately, this year is one of the worst they have seen,” said Rizwan.

Rizwan pointed out that Kerry people are one of the most generous people both nationally and internationally and that he is very grateful for this.

Donations close for the KIOS on this Saturday but people can donate directly to Human Appeal Ireland if they want.

Another donation campaign for clothes is possibly expected to start up again in March.

Anyone looking to donate can drop their donations into the Kerry Islamic Outreach centre which is in Maine Street opposite Radio Kerry.

Alternatively, they can contact the KIOS via Facebook or via email at kerryislamicoutreach@gmail.com
