Council Introduces Cashless Parking Meters In Two Car Parks

.
The Parklands car park now has a cashless parking meter.

CASHLESS parking meters have been introduced at two car parks in Tralee town centre.

Three councillors — Sinn Féin Cllrs Deirdre Ferris and Cathal Foley and Fianna Fáil Cllr Mikey Sheehy — asked for an update on the rollout of the smart parking project for the Tralee Municipal District at the meeting of councillors this Monday morning.

The Council has recently installed two new cashless parking meters, one located in the Parklands car park and the other in the Brandon car park, on a trial basis. Cash-friendly meters are still operational at both car parks.

The new parking machines facilitate the public to pay for their parking using a debit or credit card. If this trial period proves successful, the Council will proceed to tender for the replacement of all parking meters in Tralee town centre.

In addition to the replacement of parking meters, the Council has also explored the possibility of introducing cashless parking which is a quick and secure way to pay for parking.

These cashless options would enable “touch free” parking where the public can pay for their parking via a number of options such as an app, text or phone.

There can also be additional features to enable customers to top up their parking remotely, receive reminders when parking is about to expire and other functionality to further support businesses and encourage customers to park and shop in the town.

It is intended to pursue this new initiative in conjunction with replacing the meters over the coming months.

Cashless Parking Payment Options Set To Be Introduced In Tralee

.

KERRY County Council is engaging with companies who specialise in cashless pay parking systems with a view to tendering for such a system over the coming weeks.

At Monday’s meeting of Tralee Municipal District of Kerry County Council, Fianna Fáil Cllr Mikey Sheehy tabled a motion that in light of public health and safety concerns as a consequence of the COVID19 pandemic, that the Council expedite the transition of parking meters to allow contactless payment and/or text parking, otherwise known as smart parking, in this Municipal District.

“It’s a huge issue, we need to guarantee the safety of locals and tourists in Tralee. This has to be put out there immediately,” said Cllr Sheehy.

In reply, Council management said it upgraded its traffic fines management system in 2019 which is compatible with other cashless pay parking systems (e.g. a smartphone app).

The Council is now engaging with companies who specialise in cashless pay parking systems with a view to tendering for such a system over the coming weeks. Cashless payment options are being rolled out in other local authorities who operate a similar Traffic Fines Management System to ourselves.

These cashless options will enable “Touch Free” parking, where thevpublic can pay for their parking via a number of options, such as by using the app, text or phone.

There will be additional features to enable customers to top up their parking and receive reminders when parking is about to expire, thereby reducing the possibility of receiving parking fines and encouraging customers to park and shop in town.

Kieran Ruttledge of Tralee Chamber Alliance welcomes the free parking for December.

TRALEE Chamber Alliance and the retailers in the town have described the decision to introduce free parking for motorists in Tralee during December as an early Christmas present to the entire county.

On-street parking and parking in Kerry County Council-operated car parks will be free from 1pm-6pm, Monday to Sunday from December 1-31, it was revealed at the monthly meeting of Tralee Municipal District at Kerry County Council on Monday.

Cllr Norma Foley appealed to Council Management to make the four Saturdays in December free all day, thus ensuring Friday from 1pm to Monday morning free for shoppers.

The Council said they would look at the suggestion.

The news comes a week ahead of the launch of the 2014 Christmas Spraoi in Tralee which will see a full calendar of Festive events at various locations from November 29th to New Year’s Day.

“Kerry County Council have been very proactive in their efforts to ensure a seamless transition since the abolition of Tralee Town Council,” said CEO of Tralee Chamber Alliance, Kieran Ruttledge.

“We are grateful to the councillors in Tralee Municipal District who voted to retain the free parking initiative which has been very successful for businesses in Tralee town in the lead-up to Christmas. It will also act as an incentive for families from outside Tralee to visit the county capital to explore the wonderful choice of shops, cafés and restaurants during the festive season,” said Mr Ruttledge.

The Christmas Spraoi in Tralee will be launched on Monday, November 10 and full details of all the daily events, Christmas party nights and competitions will be available from www.Tralee.ie and www.facebook.com/ChristmasSpraoiInTralee.

A FIANNA Fail county councillor is proposing that the authority pilot a new scheme where people can pay their parking ticket over the phone using an app, rather than having to rush back to their car to renew their tickets.

Cllr Norma Foley is bringing the issue up at the next meeting of the Tralee Municipal District councillors on Monday.

The ‘Parking Tag’ app system was introduced by Dublin City Council and Cllr Foley believes it might work here.

“Basically this app facilitates people who have to run back and forward to the parking meter. It’s fast, it’s user friendly and it creates stress-free shopping in Dublin city and I would hope we could replicate it here. I think it’s important that the Municipal District is innovative in its thinking and anything that can help bring people into to the town centre is worth looking at,” said the Tralee councillor.

Consumers download the free app and give their credit/debit card details. Ten minutes from when the time is up on the meter, they get a text so they can top up the meter from their phone.

Cllr Foley is hoping that the Council will contact Dublin City Council to find out more about the system to see how much it costs, if it has been successful and to see if it can be introduced in Tralee as a pilot scheme.

“Parking in any town is always going to be an issue. There are plenty places to park in the town but people don’t know where to go. If you go to Cork or Dublin you’ll see electronic signs telling you where vacant parking spots are so I’ll be bringing that up at the meeting as well,” she said.
