Tralee Retailers Adapting To Challenging Times With Online Shopping Service

.

WHILE there has been a devastating impact on the retail trade in Tralee due to the Coronavirus crisis, some retailers are rising to the challenge by adapting and offering an online shopping service.

We spoke to a few of them who are doing their best for their businesses and to provide a service for customers during this difficult time.

“It’s obviously a massive change for us, especially at such a busy time of year”, Heather O’Sullivan from John Ross Jewellers told us.

“My great grandfather saw us through the Spanish Flu Epidemic in 1918.  I never thought that I would be looking after the business during a pandemic too.”

Heather said that she has had to completely change the way John Ross Jewellers works since the start of the temporary closure.

“We are now selling jewellery and watches exclusively online through our website www.johnrossjewellers.com.  Customers are purchasing gifts and gift vouchers for loved ones because they can’t visit them in person.  We are sending out the gifts directly including gift wrap and gift cards.  Despite all the worries that everybody has at the moment, it is still lovely to see people being so thoughtful.”

Peter Harty of CH Chemists explained that whilst the pharmacy and opticians at CH are still open, the other departments are available online at www.chtralee.ie.

“We are evolving during this difficult period so that we are covering essentials and maintaining good contact with our customers.  Our pharmacy is operating to fulfil prescriptions and offer advice.  The optical department is open for emergencies only, but products like contact lenses can be ordered by telephone.  Our other departments are online at www.chtralee.ie or customers can place orders for any product over the phone.  We are also offering a home delivery service in the Tralee area.”

Another Tralee retailer who has further developed their website to adapt to the changes, Sandra Rusk at Weardrobe, told us that many of her clients are availing of her deposit facility online at www.weardrobe.ie.

“We have had an online shop for some time, customers love looking at our new ranges from home, but the deposits facility is new.  It means that my clients can continue to pay off the items that they have put away in the shop.  It’s really handy for them.”

In light of government advice to businesses to find new and innovative ways of looking after their customers and protecting jobs, the businesses of Tralee seem to be rising to the challenge.

Kevin McCarthy, President of Tralee Chamber Alliance commented: “I believe that the people of Kerry will want to support local and shop local throughout this crisis.  It’s good to see that Tralee shops are doing their best to keep business going and support the local economy.”

All three retailers would like to offer their assurance that all goods dispatched from their shops are handled in line with HSE advice in relation to COVID-19.

Public Give Their Opinions On Tralee Shopping At Open Forum

AROUND 70 members of the public gathered in the Ashe Hotel on Monday night to give their thoughts as part of open forum about how to make the shopping experience in Tralee a better one.

The event, led by retail members of Tralee Chamber Alliance and the Institute of Technology Tralee, will focus on identifying the needs and wants of shoppers with a view to positioning Tralee as the retail capital of the southwest.

“We want the shopping experience in Tralee to be so good that it becomes a must-visit while people are in Kerry,” said Kieran Ruttledge of Tralee Chamber Alliance.

“We want it that, anyone visiting Kerry, be it Kenmare, Dingle or Killarney, that if they want to go shopping, they must come to Tralee,” he added.

The forum was chaired by Manager of the Centre for Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Development in IT Tralee, Breda O’Dwyer.

With the information gathered, Tralee Chamber Alliance, will bring it back to retailers to show them what the customers think.

The scheduled topics up for debate were…

  • Is Tralee shopping user-friendly?
  • Tralee shoppers’ needs and wants?
  • Motivation to shop, or not to shop in Tralee?
  • Traffic and parking in Tralee

With every topic, each table appointed a spokesperson and were given time to discuss and put forward issues that were of importance to them.

Some of the issues that cropped up were parking, more signage for shops, seating both inside and outside shops, positioning of taxi ranks, wheelchair access, vacant shops becoming eye-soars, shops being cluttered and more public toilets and changing facilities in the town centre.

There was also a broad consensus that Tralee needed to follow Killarney’s lead with regards the presentation of the town centre. The suggestions being, more hanging baskets around the town and for the streets to be regularly power-washed clean.

There was a suggestion that not enough was being done to draw people in with festivals, that the Square should be a focal point with markets and events throughout the year.

To freshen up the look of the Mall, it was put forward that the taxi rank should be moved to the back of Milk Market lane because the taxis can become a bit of an eyesore.

One of the questions put forward was, is the Town Park an incentive to attract shoppers to Tralee?

There was contrasting views on this point. A couple of people felt that the park was dangerous at times to bring children.

A mother, who spends time in Tralee off and on and visits the park regularly, held an opposite opinion on this. She felt that the park, which she visits almost everyday with her baby, was beautiful and she no issues regards its safety.

When the parking issue was raised, the notion of free parking for an hour was a view that was held in the room.

After the meeting, organisers said that overall it was a very positive discussion with a real appetite for making Tralee the shopping capital in the southwest.

The event was just one aspect of the initiative. Retail managers and owners will also be interviewed along with footfall data being collected.

The study is expected to be concluded by the end of the week with the findings presented at a Tralee Chamber Alliance meeting next Monday.

WHILE most sports fans are salivating at the prospect of a month of football on the box, the explosion of TV sales never materialised this year according to local and national retailers.

The World Cup normally signals a rush to get the biggest, flattest and most hi-tech TV for the feast of football, but due to Ireland not being there and the surge in TV sales prior to the digital changeover less than two years ago, there is no bonanza for dealers.

“The Saorview -or digital changeover – forced people into changing their TVs so, as a result of that, people already have a modern flat-panel in their house and that’s impacted on World Cup sales,” said Brendan Culloty of Hugh Culloty Expert in The Mall.

“In fact the brown goods market was down 40 percent last year nationwide because of this,” he said.

Over at Soundstore the story was the same.

“We’ve not seen much of an increase and any rise we have seen has more to do with a sale we’ve currently on than the World Cup,” said an employee there.

In Harvey Norman, they said Ireland’s failure to make it to Rio put paid to a boom in sales.

“They’re up a small bit, but Ireland not being in it makes a huge difference. During the Euros in 2012 we saw a massive increase,” said store employee Liam O’Dowd.

Currys, however, has seen an increase due to a special promotion they are running for the tournament.

“We’ve an offer where we’ll we refund €5 for every goal Brazil score at the World Cup, if they score 20 goals that’s €100 off,” said Conor O’Shea at the store.
