Austin StacksSENIOR FOOTBALL

Austin Stacks 0-9; Waterville 0-6.

One could use many of the sporting clichés to describe this round 10 Co. League game played at a drizzly and breezy Waterville on last Saturday evening (27th Sept). Like ‘a win is a win’, or ‘it’s good to win when you are playing poorly’ or ‘it’s good to get a bad game out of your system.’

But we did win, to maintain our unbeaten run in this season’s Co. League – so far our best League season, from a results point of view, in 35 years.
We had a brilliant start. Wayne Guthrie, who had another very good game, won the throw-in and after a patient build-up Daniel Bohan (great to see Daniel back again after his injury) punched over the opening score after 35 seconds. Still inside the 3rd minute David Mannix had slotted over another two in quick succession.

Then Waterville got going and between the 5th and 8th minutes had drawn level with three good points. Between then and half time we added another three, to two for the home side – our three coming from Shane O’Callaghan, Greg Horan and Mikey Collins – to leave us one ahead at the break (0-6 to 0-5).

Both sides had a point each within five minutes of the resumption – William Kirby on target for us. We then had to wait another 17 minutes for the next score – a brilliant long-ranged effort by Wayne Guthrie. Mikey Collins added another five minutes later for what turned out to be the last score of the game. We scored 9 points, all from play, and had 11 wides. Waterville scored 6 points, two from play, and had 10 wides.

In addition to Daniel it was also good to see John Dennis back on duty after his injury and also good to see Seán Purcell making his first appearance of the season with the Senior team.

Team: Darragh O’Brien, Fearghal MacNamara, Barry Shanahan (Capt), John Dennis, Pa McCarthy, Conor Jordan, Greg Horan (0-1), Wayne Guthrie (0-1), William Kirby (0-1), Michael Collins (0-2), Shane Carroll, Daniel Bohan (0-1), David Mannix (0-2), Shane O’Callaghan (0-1), Darragh O’Brien.

Subs used: Fiachna Mangan (37m), Ronan Shanahan (40m), Ciarán O’Connell (51m), Seán Purcell (57m).

We had already qualified for the final prior to this game but the other results of the weekend will pit us against Dr. Crokes in that final, the team we defeated in the opening round of the competition last March.

But before that it’s back to Co. Championship action this weekend with the playing of the four quarter finals. It’s a double header in both Austin Stack Park on this Saturday ( 4th Oct) and in Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday (5th). Our game, against West Kerry, is in the Stadium at 4pm, preceded at 2pm by the Mid Kerry .v. Laune Rangers game.

JUNIOR B FOOTBALL: Our B team have at least two more games to play. The Co. League Final replay against Killarney Legion is due to take place in Connolly Park but no date has been fixed as we write.
We are also involved in the Town League Final, against Na Gaeil, and no details of this has been announced yet.

Austin Stacks Club News 15/09/14

Austin StacksJUNIOR B FOOTBALL: Legion 2-10; Austin Stacks 1-13.

On a splendid summer’s evening (Sat, 13th Sept) at the Derreen pitch in Killarney this pulsating Co. League final ended all square after both sides had provided an exhibition of football with every player out on their feet after giving their all.

We found ourselves a goal down inside the 4th minute after Legion converted a penalty. But we owned the rest of the half – holding the opposition scoreless from play – Legion added one more point from a 13th minute free. Our goal, in the 23rd minute, also came from a penalty which was brilliantly put away by Denis McElligott after Eamon McAllen was brought down in the square with goal on his mind.

Before that, Darren Tiernan had registered our first two points, both from well-taken frees after fouls on Alan Duggan and Eamon McAllen. Our next two points were superb, both from our midfielders, Alan Duggan and Seán Purcell – what a game both had, still going strong after 60 minutes.

Our three remaining points of the half came from inspirational captain, Eoin Colgan, a second for Alan and a 3rd pointed free from Darren to leave us six clear at the break (1-7 to 1-1).

Ten minutes into the second half saw our lead cut to five after Legion put over three to two for us. Our two points came from Seán Purcell and Niall Carroll Cane who had another very good performance.

But this game was turned on its head in a three minute spell (43rd to 46th) . First Legion were lucky to get a goal from play, but they followed this with three good points to put them back in the lead (2-7 to 1-9). However, a minute later we were back on level terms with one of the points of the game by Sean Dukes. The 17 year old was just five minutes on the pitch when he won a ball near the side line. He took on at least three veteran defenders to burrow his way goalwards and from an acute angle put over a beauty.

In the 48th minute Denis McElligott (great to see Denis back again, playing his first Club game in four months after his sojourn abroad) was fouled and Alan Duggan pointed the resultant free. But Legion responded again with two more to put them back in the lead again.
Two minutes of normal time remained when Alan Duggan pointed his 4th of the game, this from his 2nd free after Eamon McAllen was fouled for the umpteenth time. A minute later Seán Purcell put over a beauty from play – his 3rd of the game to put us back in front. But deep in injury time Legion equalized from a free to send the tie to a replay.

This was a tremendous performance by our lads, which will please Tim McMahon, Colm Mangan and John O’Sullivan no end. when you consider that nine who lined out in the game also played the previous evening with the U21 team in Gallarus, also in energy-sapping heat.

Team: Patrick Fitzgibbon, Paul Galvin, Barry Walsh, Nicholas Gogarty, Tom McLoughlin, Denis McElligott (1-0 pen), Seamus Bastible, Alan Duggan (0-4 – 2 frees), Seán Purcell (0-3), Dale Counihan, Darren Tiernan (0-3 – frees), Eoin Colgan (Capt) (0-1), Shane Crowley, David O’Sullivan, Eamon McAllen.
Subs: Niall Carroll Cane (15m) (0-1), Seán Dukes (41m) (0-1), Ciarán Flanagan (48m), Dylan Harnett (52m), Breandán Caball (57m).

U21 FOOTBALL: An Ghaeltacht 5-17; Austin Stacks 4-10.

On an ideal evening for football we travelled to Gallarus last Friday (12th Sept) for the quarter final of the Co. Club Championship and after one of the highest scoring games in memory we came up short against a very good An Ghaeltacht side.

The home side went into an early two points lead before Shane Crowley placed Darragh O’Brien for our first point. Then in the space of six minutes (10th to 16th) the game produced four consecutive goals, The first two went to the West Kerry boys followed in quick succession by two for our lads. The first was simply brilliant. Alan Duggan won the kick-out, passed to Michael O’Donnell who linked with the impressive Niall Carroll Cane and he found David O’Sullivan who placed Shane Crowley for a great goal.

Our next came three minutes later with Niall and Alan Duggan involved again and Eamon McAllen, on this occasion, finishing to the net.
It was now point for point by both sides with Darragh O’Brien pointing our two from a free and from play. After being seven points down after 12 minutes we were now just one adrift after 20 minutes. And it got better a minute later when our third goal by Darragh O’Brien put us in the lead for the first time.
But Gaeltacht powered through in the closing ten minutes to outscore us by 1-3 to 0-1 with Darragh on target for us from a well-taken 45.

This left us adrift by three at half time after playing against a stiffish breeze (3-7 to 3-4).

The second half was just over a minute old when Tom McLoughlin, from his wing-back position, launched a perfect pass to David O’Sullivan and he placed Darragh O’Brien who now brought his tally to 1-5 with a well-taken point. Two more points followed from Eamon McAllen and Conor Jordan and then came one the best goals of the nine when Alan Duggan and Michael O’Donnell found Greg Horan who blasted to the net.

We were now one ahead (4-8 to 3-10) but like the first half Gaeltacht continued with their level of intensity and in the remaining twenty minutes took complete control adding a further 2-7 to 0-2 for us with Darragh O’Brien on target from another 45 and one from play by Greg Horan.

The scoreline does not really do justice to our display which rivaled our opponents for most of the game and on another day could have yielded a different result. One would have to trawl through the record books to find a team with a scoreline of 4-10 on the loosing side (Kerry’s win over Offaly in the 1980 semi final comes to mind 4-15 to 4-10)

Team: Patrick Fitzgibbon, Paul Galvin, Alan Crean, Niall Carroll Cane, Tom McLoughlin, Conor Jordan (0-1), Ciarán O’Connell, Alan Duggan, Greg Horan (1-2), Shane Crowley (1-0), Michael O’Donnell, James Galvin, David O’Sullivan, Darragh O’Brien (Capt) (1-6 – 1 free; 2 forty fives), Eamon McAllen (1-1).
Subs used: Kyle Fitzgibbon (23m), Breandán Caball (47m), Seán Fitzmaurice (52m).

ALL IRL FINAL TIT BITS:

Our Minors will be appearing in their 24th final next Sunday. It will be the 15th time that both Seniors and Minors have appeared in a Final in the same year since first doing it in 1931. And we won the double that year. The last time we won the double in the same year was 1980 and what a contingent from the Rock was on both teams that day. On the Seniors we had Johnno and Ger O’Keeffre, Ger Power and Mikey Sheehy And on the Minor team we had Michael Crowley, Michael Counihan and Liam Kearns.

Let us wish both teams all the best on Sunday and hope they achieve that elusive double again. Best of luck to the Rock contingent involved in both teams – Kieran Donaghy and Mikey Sheehy with the Senior squad as well as Fearghal MacNamara and Shane O’Callaghan who were part of the Training squad all season, and Jack Morgan, Seán Ryan and Michael O’Donnell on the Minor panel.

BEST WISHES: It’s great to see former Club Vice Chairman, Pat Joe McQuinn out and about again after his recent hospitalization. Continued progress Pat Joe from everyone in the Club.

SYMPATHY:

It was with great sadness that all in the Club and the local community learned of the untimely death of Robert Power last week. Robert was a valued member of our Juvenile teams in the late nineties and early noughties.

He played Minor in three consecutive seasons 2003 -2005, making a total of 24 appearances over the three years and being one of the top scorers in seasons 2004 and 2005 along with fellow players Graham O’Connell, Joey O’Connor, Brían Mangan, Joey Kinsella, Alain Creagh and Neil Goulding.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Robert’s family – his parents Ger & Catherine, brother Gerard, sisters Catriona and Michelle – and to all his extended family and friends.

FAOI 13/14:

Last Wednesday evening our Under 14 A Boys capped off an impeccable season by winning their fourth trophy of the season! They claimed the Coiste na nÓg Town League Title with a fine victory over Churchill at Connolly Park…6-13 to 2-13. Donagh McMahon headed up a strong panel that showed tremendous discipline and composure when most needed. One of the outstanding memories is the performance of Seán Carmody who chipped in a remarkable hat trick from midfield.

Colm Mangan presented the Cup to our captain, Donagh Mac Mathúna, who gave a fine speech. Comhghairdeachas to team and mentors. These lads can now enjoy a well deserved break for a few weeks before they begin their preparations for next year’s Under 16 season. An Charraig go deo! (ii) Meanwhile, in Strand Road, the Under 14 Development squad played a game of two halves against The Blues in the Division 3 last round game. Down 3-12 to 0-3 at half time, it looked ‘done and dusted’ but the young Rockies took advantage of the break to reorganise.

The second half was a revelation as The Rock team took over and overcame the 18 point deficit to draw the game…3-17 to 5-11!! Dochreidthe! James O’Donoghue would have been proud of the coolness with which Tom O’Farrell scored the equalising point! It has to be said, however, that this was a fantastic team effort! Those who left at half time were the only losers on the night!

Division 3 semi-final:

Austin Stack Club B boys v Ballymac @ 6.30pm on Wednesday 24th. It will be close! (iv) At the club grounds in Connolly Park, and in glorious sunshine (buíochas le Dia), an extremely impressive Salthill/Cnoc na Cathrach team (Galway) were crowned 2014 Lee Strand Under 13 Champions on Sunday last. A power-packed display gave them a victory over our own gallant boys from The Rock…5-13 to 1-7. (Half time: 2-5 to 0-5).

Congratulations to the excellently drilled Tribesmen who exacted a revenge of sorts from the corresponding fixture two short years ago. Our own campaign was not without distinction as the team has improved considerably over the past few weeks and won all their three group games on the Saturday as well as their best showing in the semi-final v Cuala Kickhams (Dublin).

The scores were as follows:- Round 1: AdeS 5-8; Legion (Killarney) 1-5; Round 2: AdeS 2-4; Ennistymon (Clare) 0-4; Round 3: AdeS 1-5; Ballyboden/St Enda’s (Dublin) 0-2; semi-final: AdeS 1-9; Cuala Kickhams (Dublin) 0-2.

This achievement of emerging unbeaten was put in context as this group produced three finalists for the Cup, Shield and Plate competitions, as well as 2 competition winners in Ennistymon (Shield) and Legion (Plate). Despite the disappointment of losing the final, the lads have every reason to hold their heads high and the future is very bright indeed for this fast developing unit.

An painéal: David Oba, Craig Ó Tíocháin, Danny Draghici, David Burke, Pádhraic Linnane, Dara Barry-Walsh, Eoghan Carroll, Seán Quilter, Leon Sholamba, Jordan Barry, Liam Nolan, Adam Curran, James Fernane, Conor Myers, Joe Bastible, Tom O’Farrell, Jordan Kissane, Cian Purcell, Luke Chester, Daniel Breen, Greg Scanlon, Niall Fitzmaurice, Ben Quilter. Mentors: Eamon Linnane, Dave Scanlon, Wayne Guthrie, Paudie McQuinn, Gene O’Donnell.

A big ‘thank you’ to our sponsors BARRY’S BAKERY and special mention to Mike Lynch, Dinny O’Connor and all who worked as part of the committee in running an excellent 29th Tournament. And last, but not least, special ‘buíochas mór’ to Jerry O’Dwyer and his LEE STRAND team…they have stood by this competition for all these years…a great example of local support at its best!

JUNIOR B FOOTBALL

After last week’s (1st Sept) draw in the Molyneaux Cup semi final against Dr. Crokes (0-15 to 2-9) in Connolly Park our B team is due to travel to Lewis Road on this Monday evening (8th Sept) for the replay. Check Web for report.

Then we travel to Killarney again five days later (Sat 13th Sept) to play Legion in the Co. League final. Throw in 6pm.

U21 FOOTBALL

We have drawn An Ghaeltacht away in the quarter final of the Co. Club Championship. As we write the game is due to go ahead in Gallarus on this Friday evening (12th Sept) with a 6.15 throw-in but with at least 12 of our U21 players also on the B team (who are due to play the following day), a new date, which we have requested, seems likely.

HURLING

Austin Stacks 1-12; St. Pats (East Kerry) 0-7.

Our Hurlers won their first trophy of the season when they overcame St. Pats in the final of the South Kerry Novice Championship played in ideal conditions in Caherslee on last Monday (1st Sept).

After a slow start both sides were still on level terms after 20 minutes (0-4 all) with all our four coming from play – one each by John McCarthy and Ronan Gilsenan and two from Peter Doyle – his second a beauty after receiving a perfect long ball from Andrew Morrissey.

Our two remaining points of the half came from a Ronan Gilsenan effort from play and a well-converted 65 from John McCarthy to leave us ahead by two at the break (0-6 to 0-4).

The second half was just 50 seconds old when Peter Doyle was at the end of a slick move to score the only goal of the game. This score inspired our lads and with Ronan and Shane Fitz dominating midfield we went on to score a further four points in the next ten minutes with John McCarthy on target from a free and three from play by Michael O’Leary, Bella and Pip.

We now led by three clear goals (1-10 to 0-4) and eased up a little in the final quarter when we added a further two to three for the opposition – our two coming from another Peter Doyle effort from play and another John McCarthy free.

Paddy White, PRO of the South Kerry Board, who also refereed the game, presented the Lee Strand sponsored Pat Delaney Financial Services Shield to team captain, Peter O’Regan

Team: John Connolly, Kevin O’Leary, Peter O’Regan (Capt), Seán King, Paudie Bradley, Jim McCarthy, Andrew Morrissey, Ronan Gilsenan (0-2), Shane Fitzgerald, Michael O’Leary (0-02), Joe Brennan, John McCarthy (0-4 – 3 frees), John Bradley, Peter Doyle (1-4), Thomas Meehan.

Subs used: Liam Cleary (ht), Damien McCarthy (42m), Ross Long (42m), Brian Meehan (49m), David Field (57m)..

ALL IRL FINAL TIT BITS

Next Sunday week’s encounter will be Kerry’s 59th appearance in the final (excluding their 9 replays). Of the 58 played to date we have won 36 and lost 22 (which includes the walk-over we gave to Louth in 1910).

Most people know that Eoin The Bomber Liston is the only Kerryman to score a hat trick of goals in a final – in the 1978 win against Dublin. Many may not know that in Kerry’s history in Finals, since their first in 1892, only six other players have scored two goals in the same final – and three of those were Stacks men.

The first to do it was John Joe Purty Landers in the 1937 drawn game. Tim O’Leary (Killarney) repeated the feat in the 1937 replay. Then in 1939 Strand Road’s Dan Spring scored 2. Twenty years elapsed before Duagh’s Dan McAuliffe did it in the 1959 final. And the remaining two to do it were Rock men – Mikey Sheehy in 1979 and Kieran Donaghy in 2007.

BIRTHDAY GREETINGS

Three significant birthday celebrations took place last weekend. Frances Quirke (sister of Charlie Healy) celebrated with a party in the Greyhound. Brian Neenan and Denis O’Connor celebrated big birthdays as wel,l and but for the vigilance of some alert members these two might have passed unnoticed. Happy birthday to all three from everyone in the Club and the local community.

PEIL FAOI 12

Our Under 12Bs are back to winning ways after two heavy defeats to Ballymac and Laune Rangers. Though this team is made up primarily of 11 year-olds, we came out on top in a hard fought match i gcoinne na Gaeltachta last Monday evening. Ben Quilter, having one of his best games in goal, was kept very busy. A goal from Johnny Feeley and a goal on the stroke of half time by Donnacha Fox had us leading…3-6 to 2-7…at the break.

Another goal from Evan Foley, midway through the second half, brought this tally to a ‘game high’ of 2-4. Strong defending throughout from Brian McElligott and two fine points late in the game from Joe Reidy clinched victory. Full time score: 4-10 to 3-9. We hosted two Legion teams on Friday last and we had two very enjoyable high tempo games. Our other Under 12 warriors engaged in an enthralling encounter in Connolly Park v An Ghaeltacht.

We played some of the best football of our season to date. In a match that exhibited all that’s best in Gaelic football, our boys displayed their full repertoire of skills and emerged with a fine victory…4-11 to 4-10. Scorers: James Fernane (2-2), Cian Purcell (1-4), Conor Horan (1-0), Greg Scanlon (0-2), Shane Bastible (0-1), Armin Heinrich (0-1) and Joey Nagle (0-1).
