IT started later than scheduled due to how bright it is these nights, but the wait was worth it for audience who enjoyed the open air screening of ‘Sing Street in the Town Park last night.

The fact that the Féile na mBláth is taking place at the same time ensured people could get their popcorn, ice-cream burgers and hotdogs from the nearby food stands before the movie started.

The event was booked out says before the screening, but there was still room for people to get a good vantage point to see the popular movie. Scroll down for photos…

IN the end, the weather kept its promise and the rain stayed away on Friday night, thus leaving everyone else to enjoy the much anticipated culture night taking place all around the town.

One of the biggest draws of the night was the special open air cinema which was showing the screening of everyone’s favourite farm animal in Shaun The Sheep.

The crowds started to arrive early on as they looked to get the best seats in the house, with most families looking incredibly well prepared with blankets, insect repellent and a few buckets of popcorn on show throughout.

There was a great hush as the screen lit up with the ‘Shaun The Sheep’ title as everyone rushed back from playing with the balloons on offer and sat down to enjoy the film and a great culture night.

The story was much the same over in the Abbey Inn where a series of poetry/story and music performances drew great support and a great, with some exceptionally talented pieces read out on the night.

This intimate performance was organised by the Thursday Night Writers Tralee Group and judging by the steadily increasing rounds of applause and laughs throughout the evening, the group can hold their head up high after such a success.

With many other events all over town, the 10th Culture Night is going from strength to strength.

THE weather was unkind at times, but ‘Raiders Of The Lost Ark’ still has the power to transfix audiences as proven by the turnout in the Town Park on Friday night.

The heavens opened but Indy’s antics were enough to distract over 350 people from the rain as the Secret Cine Club’s opening screening of their summer season was a great success.

People started gathering in the Park (in the area near the playground) from around 8pm and three was a mix of different ages, from people who were awestruck watching it in cinemas for the first time in 1981, to teenagers watching it for the, well, probably 15th time.

There was a huge round of applause at the end so well done to all for organising such a great event.

The next Tralee screening from the Secret Cine Club is another Spielberg classic, ‘Close Encounters Of The Third Kind’, on Saturday, August 22.

Hope the weather is better!

2. Test The Oul Noggin

If swashbuckling, whip-action isn’t your thing, then there’s a table quiz out in the Spa to get the brain working.

It’s actually a fundraiser for Tralee Rose Escort Shane Kenny for his travails during the Festival as well as proceeds going towards the Churchill Players Pantomime Group.

It begins at 8pm out in the Oyster Taven.

3. There’s Some Match On In Killarney…

Kerry and Cork go at each other again on Saturday night out in Killarney so expect a huge crowd and an amazing atmosphere.

Tickets for the terrace at €20 and are available from Garvey’s Supervalu in Tralee.

A bit of advice after two weeks ago; leave early…very early!

4. Forget The Rain, Get Out And Enjoy Yourself

Jesus but it’s been a bad summer so far. Maybe it’s that we got used to the good summers over the past couple of years, but it really feels like a washout this time.

Tough!

Make the best of it by getting out for a walk, head to town for shopping, go for a meal and have a few drinks. Don’t let the feckin rain get you down!

5. Camán Feel The Noise

Ok, see that map there? For many, living anywhere west of that road between Tralee and Listowel, it’s going to be a busy Sunday.

There are three opening round games in the Kerry Senior Hurling Championship with  a double bill taking place in Causeway – beginning at 1.30pm with Crotta O’Neill’s v Kilmoyley and the second match between Abbeydorney v St Brendan’s at 3pm.

This is followed by a 6pm throw-in in Kilmoyley for the match between Ballyduff v Causeway.

Not for the faint of heart.
