HAVE you ever wondered about bilingual education? Have you ever considered sending your child to an Irish language school? Would you like to learn more about the advantages of bilingual education?

On this Wednesday, October 17 at 8pm, Dónal Ó hAiniféin, principal of Gaelscoil Mhichíl Chíosóig, Ennis, former president of Gaelscoileanna, and a native of Lios Póil, will give a talk in English on the benefits of bilingual education, and in particular on the advantages of Irish medium education, in the Meadowlands Hotel Tralee.

An expert on immersion education, Dónal has been invited to Tralee by the local branch of Conradh na Gaeilge, who were instrumental in setting up Gaelscoil Mhic Easmainn in 1978, and the Aonad Lán-Ghaeilge in 1984, out of which emerged Gaelcholáiste Chiarraí.

Decades of local children have since reaped the rewards of bilingual education at primary and post-primary level in Tralee, as increasing numbers of parents opt for Irish medium education for their children.

With Gaelscoil Mhic Easmainn celebrating its 40th year, and Gaelcholáiste Chiarraí looking forward to moving to a brand new campus, the future looks healthy for an Ghaeloideachas in Tralee.

In other news, Kerry County library is running conversational groups in many of its branches, local Conradh na Gaeilge branches have regular get-togethers, and the Pop-Up Gaeltacht movement has proved very popular with Irish speakers keen to use their Irish in a relaxed informal setting.

Here in Tralee, people meet once a month in a local pub; the next Pop Up Gaeltachtaí are The Castle Bar 11/10/18, An Teach Beag 15/11/18, The Brogue Inn 13/12/18 @ 9.30 p.m. All welcome, whatever level.
