Irish Subbuteo World Cup Qualifiers – 17 February, Dublin
Ten hopefuls met for an intense day of table football in the Cherrytree, Walkinstown Dublin to decide the 4 standard bearers to lead Ireland at the 2024 World Cup in England, this coming September.

The first two places to be decided were in the Open category which comprised of a group of 3 players playing each other twice. As expected, the two favourites Mark and Andy won through, but Oisin who played in the 2022 championships in Rome pushed the two victors close in his games and can count himself unlucky to have missed out.

The second category was the veterans with 7 players competing for the two converted places. Again, this went as might be expected with John and Gerry taking their places in Tunbridge Wells. This section wasn’t totally cut and dried until the end with Gerry still needing to avoid defeat to qualify. He managed it with a goalless draw against Cork’s William.

John came close to an invincible performance, just failing to win his final game, drawing 1-1 with Dave, but still qualified comfortably winning all his other games. Aidrian put in a good performance in 3rd place and just might have nicked a spot had the games gone on for another round!

For the rest of us, all isn’t lost yet as the team selections have yet to be decided as well as the players for the old rules’ tournaments.

The competition takes place in Tunbridge Wells, England from Friday 20 to Sunday 22 September 2024.

From a personal perspective my results were:
W 3-0 walk over
W 1-0 Nick-Wexford

W 1-0 Silver Fox John-Dublin
D 0-0 William-Cork
L 0-2 Adrian-Dublin
L 0-2 Gerry-UK
D 1-1 John-Wexford
